"Woke" is kind of vague and can be defined in a lot of ways. Some agree/disagree with the definition based on whether they agree with the term or not. It's all confusing. Better to just speak concrete, pure policy that everyone understands.

The first documented use of the phrase “stay woke” happened in the 1930s when Lead Belly ended his song about the Scottsboro Boys by advising Black folk traveling through Alabama to “stay woke.”

It's just a dog whistle the GOP is using to create the fear, uncertainty and doubt they need to animate their base. The first woman had it right, it's about a sudden awareness of things that you had previously been ignoring or unwilling to accept that has denied others their rights and opportunities. I remember about 20 years ago a young black intern who worked for me that very much reminded me of myself at that age. He loved comics and super hero movies but it dawned on me that every one of them were white, there was not a single one that shared his skin color.
These people are the reason I have to do research for an hour, before discussing things in the classroom.
I can’t believe how close to right that first woman was. So close, but still not getting it.

1. (original definition) The heightened awareness of social and political injustices, particularly concerning racial and social inequality.
2. Wokeism (current parlance) The hypersensitiviy and over-correction of those social and political injustices, whether real or percieved, and often producing negative results.

Woke for my parents growing up in the 50s/60s meant being aware of your surroundings in your own and other neighborhoods, city, state, or when traveling. My parents had to deal with "Sun Down" towns when the locals (including law enforcement) could chase you out of town, jail you, or lynch you if you are caught there after sundown. They had to be aware of their surrounds to know what services they use for gas, food, rest stop, or hotel.
The word "Woke" is new messaging of the Republicans and the right to mean anything they think is a threat to their thinking and way of life to make their voters mad, angry, and afraid.
