Similar to this in the first game all cpu placements (if not interfered by the player) are predetermined so its more about "breaking the chain" than "Fastest+Skill=victory"
When I was a kid I used to call these angry CPUs. It was a term that I would use whenever a CPU seem to be playing way outside of its set skill level.

I used to play as Yoshi all the time in MK8DX and I realised that DK and Toad were always in the race with me, so I’m happy someone else finally noticed the rival system

My hate for PGP started because I main Gold Mario and the rival system exists
So thats why waluigi and Isabelle are so good bonus point for those who guess which two characters I main without looking it up.

This rival system is definitely the most obvious in the original Super Mario Kart, but I guess I just never really noticed it in later games

I actually recognized this when playing kart 8 deluxe a couple years ago... If i recall correctly, toadettes rival was toad and lemmys rival was larry, and they were in every race too when i was playing with either toadette or lemmy.

Despite all my years of playing Mario Kart, since back when _Super Mario Kart_ was introduced, I honestly didn't know (almost) every Mario Kart *after* _Super Mario Kart_ (which made it obvious) had a Rival System based on the Driver you pick! It always felt random to me, so this was a fun little reveal! 😆
Fun Fact: Not sure if this is possible in later installments, but in _Super Mario Kart_ you can actually change your Rivals 2nd Race onwards if you make it where your Main Rival(s) come in 4th-8th. Whoever places 2nd and 3rd will then be your Rivals. 🙂
Definitely noticed it too. I played on wii and ds, and i remember there were 1 or 2 characters who were significantly harder than the others, even to the point of being somewhat rigged to try make you lose at all costs and stop you from getting the goddamn 3 stars on the last lap of the rainbow road.
Yet i don't remember it being character related, because there was always someone different being harder: once toshi, next time toad, then dry bones and the one after it was waluigi

So, since Rosalina is picked by me... what CPU NPC is my rival?
I played with Daisy to replace Rosalina, often.
I started to notice how these two girls protect each other.
When Rosalina was picked, Daisy whenever she spawned* in my team, always came in 2nd place, regardless of it being a race or some random ballons battle and vice versa.
I started theorizing that if you pick a character, then you pick another one for replacement and you play a lot of races with that, the said is gonna provide you with support.
Kind of like a real person watching over your shoulders.
I usualy play as Ludwig and Iggy is always near me (normaly 2nd 3rd or 4th)
From my experience in Mario kart 7 where i mainly play as Luigi, 3/4 of times the two rivals will be Mario and daisy

I completely faded out the content of the short when I realized the background music which was Green on Green from the game, Death Road to Canada
When I played Mario Kart 7 as Luigi, I noticed that Daisy was always in 2nd place behind me! That was my first exposure to the rival system, even though Luigi and Daisy are a couple.
Fun fact: The DK Jr. Character is in fact the same Donkey Kong we know and love today, just grown up. The original Jump Man Donkey Kong is actually Cranky Kong.
