  • The victory slips away from Botvinnik 4 times - 2 times in the middlegame, as he played too cautiously, while the active play was required, and 2 times in the endgame, as he didn't notice the possibility of zugzwang.

I was heavily reminded of the 1985 match between Karpov & Kasparov, game 24, where for several moves Karpov was essentially preparing “f5” but never played it, and eventually Kasparov actually won the game and title. Some players really have such a strong affinity to strategic, safe play that they shy away at the wrong times from necessary sharpness.
    Thanks.

Indeed, there are striking similarities between the personalities of these players. While Botvinnik and Karpov played safe and strictly positional chess and tried to win without any risk, Bronstein and Kasparov were much more creative. This difference is also reflected in their ideological and political beliefs. I think these differences are predetermined by their psychological types. In Jungian terms, Botvinnik and Karpov belonged to the thinking type, while Bronstein and Kasparov to the intuitive.

Players get tired during the match and can't/wont calculate sharp lines. It is very rare for Botvinnik to miss four wins in one game.

    Safe chess or jungle chess?!🙃
Totally two different styles of play.
Safe Chess requires incredible mental energy, while Jungle Chess takes your opponent deep into the jungle where 2+2=5?!
