I was born and raised in southwestern Louisiana. I still live in Louisiana. In my state, you can buy different brands of roux in a jar instead of making the roux. The color of your roux was beautiful.

I’ve lived in New Orleans for 45 years of my life born and raised. You did great. Next time use a seafood mix to add the seafood flavor or get fresh shrimp peel them and boil the heads for a great flavor.

U can buy the onion celery n green pepper cut up frozen. Next time. Walmart n other stores sell it. There is a season called file for gumbo

The gumbo looked good Jazz. You can basically put what you desire in gumbo, chicken thighs,sausage,crab,okra in which a lot of people don’t like because of the slime in it but you can cook it on the side and add it to your plate or bowl. The word gumbo means okra. It’s an African word. Certain parts in Africa eat gumbo. They just make theirs differently. So Kyesha wasn’t trying it lol. She was actually right in regards to African descendant dish. It looked yummy 🤤🔥🔥🔥

GOOD Job, Jazzy! I hadn't made a homemade roux for gumbo in years! For the roux, use a cup of oil to a cup of flour. The key to a good gumbo is garlic, bay leaves and thyme. You can add the sausage to fry with the seasonings, too.

Hey Jazz you did good. If you make it again use seafood broth or get the shrimp with shells, peel the shells off put them on a pot with water, strain them and use that water. It will give you more if a seafood taste. If you can get some blue crabs and right before you turn it off put some gumbo file' in there about 1 tablespoon stir in and turn it off.

Jazz please the next time clean the left over crabs a put the clusters in the gumbo omg so good. Lil sis add a bag of frozen mixed vegetables. You did amazing and I know them Maryland crabs were even better to suck all the good juice and flavor🙌🏽🙌🏽.

I l ove seafood gumbo. I dontt do a roux, I use chicken broth or seafood broth or if I get fresh shrimp I boil the heads for the stock. I put chicken necks, hearts and gizzards in mine (cuut up) sausage, all the veges you put, okra, gumbo file', dungeoness crab clusters, shrimp. (along with a host of seasonings) I also put clam juice in mine. By the time its done my has made its own type of roux. I pre brown my chicken necks, hearts, gizzards, sausage to remove excess grease. I also do the same with my okra to get rid of some of the slime. Yours looks amazing. This is the way my mom taught us how to make it. Im originally from Boston. It use to be a poor mans dish, but now its hella expensive.

Hey Jazzy, I’m from the bayou (Houma) in Louisiana not New Orleans and I feel you did great your first time making it. The roux was perfect in my opinion and I like that you added what you wanted. My memaw always used to say a gumbo is a mixture of whatever you have on hand 😂😂😂. We put just the celery onion and green bell peppers in there. We also sometimes put chicken thighs or drummettes, sausage, shrimp, turkey necks, gizzards and crabs. And the seasoning usually be simple like onion powder garlic powder some sort of seasoning salt and a little Tony’s bc that can make your gumbo real salty if you use too much. My family members put okra in their gumbos but I don’t eat it so I don’t put it in mine.We never used file (fe-lay) though. You did great friend ❤❤

Looks delicious jazzy. You asked for suggestions ... add cut up corn in 1-2 inch pieces, frozen mixed veggies, potatoes and some more flour or corn starch to thicken it up more. Okra is good too.

Your rue is suppose to be on the thick side because it’s a thickening agent. I agree add a seafood stock it will enhance the seafood taste. Other than that I think you did great and Kyesha is right it normally gets okra. I’m not an okra girl unless it’s fried because of the slimes texture. But make it to your liking. I’m from Baltimore Maryland and yes them blue crabs be hitting lol

Real Louisiana gumbo roux is made by browning the flour in the oven it’s very tedious but it will be the best tasting gumbo you ever had
