Today we document a perfect weekend in the Peak District - for a pair of urban hill climbs courtesy of Matlock Cycling Club. On the Saturday Paul Hamblett and I meet up with David Raynham for an uplifting Autumnal loop of the local countryside, and a recce of both the climbs. And then on "Super Sunday", Tony Cope aka Top Cat, joins us to take on the climb to Riber Castle in the morning followed by the iconic Bank Road in the afternoon - full gas! Matlock is an incredible part of the world for the cyclist, and these events are both sensational - only bettered by the amazing support from the residents of Matlock ! And as an added bonus, I get to meet, long time supported of the community, Doctor Huw !!

I was about 44 when I started too - and have been struck by just how rewarding cycling indoors and out can be, plus just how incredible the cycling community is. Hope you get time for some consistent training over the winter, and no doubt you’ll keep growing your FTP (mine goes up and down depending on what I’m doing ). Plenty more to come 💯👍

Much appreciated Stephan 🙏 - and Jayne says thanks on the edit (it was tight ! ). Tony and Paul’s bikes are super super light - 5.5kg needs to be picked up just to feel it! And the holes were a nice touch! Some cut off parts of the handlebars and drill holes through other parts of the bike (not the frame) - Hill Climb Season is mad 💯😁

I believe you’d find Bank Road pretty tame coming from the Lakes 😁 - But Riber has a serious sting in it’s tail - so a little energy needs to be saved. You’d smash them both ✊💪

You’d love the pacing from the big boys… Go super super hard at the beginning….. hold super super hard in the middle ….and finish it super super hard in a crescendo of lactic, snot and dribble 🤣. Super video! What an atmosphere at the hill climb events and specially over there. Great to watch you all fight to get up there, OMG the percentages. It is so good you met up with all the BP riders They all seem so kind to me. Must have been un experience for them too, being cheered up the hill by you.

Cheers VBML 🙏 - thats very kind of you 👍. Both of the jackets are from Cafe du Cycliste - and the one for the recce is my favourite, called the Albertine. The materials are really nice, and it’s got good storage - plus temp wise has been perfect for the mid Autumn and winter. Not waterproof though. Recommended 💯

Nice one HB - I still love mine 💯 I use an i-Pad Pro - which is excellent . My i-Phone plus also works well 👌. enjoy - best piece of fitness kit I ever bought 💪

Hi Yowes Bike - Go Pro sell them on their website - it’s good because the fitting is wide and has inserts to reduce if needed - so can me made to securely fit most handlebars

Hi Neil - hope all good. I had a 52:36 on the front and a 30 on the rear. On my Colnago which I used on Wrynose and Hardknott in June, I had a compact and a 32 which also worked well 👍
How's Tony allowed to ride with no helmet 😱
It’s a Hill Climb, thing Dominique. Riders can elect not to wear a helmet, because going up hill is slower and less dangerous. I prefer to keep mine on 😅
