Out of all the years making zippered pouches, I have NEVER seen a tutorial that makes the zipper look as nice as your tutorial does. The trick of cutting it 1" shorter on each end and stitching a tab to it is priceless. Thank you!!!

This is my favourite MSQC tutorial. I was always crafty but my mum & sister were the sewers of the family. Then a couple of years ago I found this tutorial by chance and was so pleased with my half dozen bags (gifts) that I tried my hand at a jelly roll quilt and haven't stopped! Now 8 quilts and numerous table toppers later, I'm known as 'the quilter' of my family! ☺
Suggestion for the inside raw edges... you could pretty easily do a french seam here to give it a more finished look instead of zigzag stitching all the way around. First flip the pouch around so the wrong sides are together and sew all the way around somewhat close to the edge, putting the raw edge on the outside of the pouch. Then flip it back so that the right sides are facing together, sew all the way around normally making sure you go beyond the seam you just made. This way there are no raw edges.
As a 30+ yr teacher, may I give Kudos to your teaching style. You break down each process into incremental tasks with clear concise steps! I actually believe I can conquer my FEAR of zippers!😀🥰🤩

You are right! These zipper pouches are addicting! I just discovered this video a week ago and already have made 6 zipper pouches! I'm a beginner sewer and enjoy making these. They are easy to make, the video is very easy to follow (and I've tried a few of them), instructions are clear, and I even got a friend hooked on these! She wanted me to make one for her but I said "you can make these yourself!". Sure enough, she's having a great time making these too. Thank you!

Hello Jenny! I have been meaning to write a message for quite some time but I just haven’t taken the time!! In March, my youngest daughter had a baby and since she is a FACS teacher, she needed a competent substitute until the end of the year to take her classes. As I sew and cook, and I’m a retired teacher, I volunteered for the assignment as a nine week full time assignment wasn’t real appealing to very many! At any rate, the students were working on a gym bag with a zipper and as I reviewed the pattern instructions, I was disappointed that the directions were anything but clear! So, I taught the classes to put a zipper in via the “Jenny method”!! The students were so much more successful with their zippers that their gym bags came out looking great using your simple instructions. !! 😊. My daughter has asked me to come back this semester to teach her classes the “Jenny zipper method”! Love ❤️ your weekly tutorials! My sister and I look forward to a return visit to Hamilton to shop again soon! Thanks so much!
I have made about 20 of these pouches-perfect every time. I usually monogram the recipient’s initials with my embroiderer. My book club and my grand daughter love theirs!!

I have watched numerous ppl make pouches and the zipper they’ve always made complicated. You however made it so simple. But that’s no surprise to me because you are the first person I started watching on CZcams teaching myself how to quilt and you always make everything simple and understandable to a beginner. I haven't done any sewing for 40 years (and have never done any quilting) so I am really nervous about doing any sewing after all these years. I want to make some small pouches to keep my crochet hook etc for each project I will put in project bags, which I also want to make. I just hope I'm not jumping in the deep end too quickly. I am a beginner quilter never really sewed, in my family my sister learned to sew and I learned to cook. When my mom passed she left me the sewing machine, it sat in the closet for years. They DO make great gifts and are ALWAYS appreciated. I made a larger "purse/tote" style bag to my grand-daughters for Christmas.....and put another small bag similar to these bags in coordinating fabrics inside that lager tote. (the older girl will use these small bags for cosmetics....the younger one will use it for small toys, candy, and a little spending money that she was given). To avoid sibling issues: I made exactly the same combo of bags but in different coordinating colors reflecting the preferences of each girl. Rave reviews from both the kids...AND my daughter-in-law!! :-) BTW: I'm NOW planning now to make similar coordinating pieces of THIS project for each of them....this time in a size which they can put their "tablet" into (with extra padding) with a side pocket they can slip their cell-phone into. All will slip neatly into the tote for safe carrying. Such well-received gifts: and I'm also carrying on a tradition of mine for decades of making gifts to give the family....and hoping that by example the tradition will be carried on by others...and a piece of sentiment and appreciation added to each holiday. ~~ RED ☮♡♫
This was a fun tutorial, and very easy to follow. I ended up using just one piece of fabric, rather than scraps, and I quilted squares. It was beautiful. The only thing I didn’t like was that you could still see the raw edges inside, which made it seem unfinished. What I loved most was that she showed how to adjust a zipper length. Thanks!
@@fanfam2613 I did see a video on making the same type of pouch that doesn't have raw edges, but it looks more complicated than just adding some bias tape!
I love this tutorial. I have made a couple dozen bags for family members. I also make some smaller ones for keeping bills and change, and driver's license to drop inside a tote when I don't need my whole purse. ---TIP: When putting on the second tab of the zipper, I use a glue stick so there is less chance of them slipping out of place while I sew.

Watching this brings back great memories. I found MSQC back when it was just Jenny with wonderful teaching videos & I would lay in bed watching them all night long. My husband used to say, "go to sleep!" Next thing you know, he was watching with me! Oh, my gosh! I am SO HAPPY that I stumbled on your channel. This is the absolute best sewing tutorial I have seen. You are a great teacher--I'm a public school teacher and have trained teachers in the past--and I truly appreciate your style. I'm not much of a seamstress, but today I saw a Nate Berkus for Target pencil pouch in another video and became obsessed with the design. It's a flat pouch with an industrial zipper on the long edge. There's also a zipped pocket that runs perpendicular to the long zipper. The genius of its design is the half-inch elastic band that's sewn into the short end seams so that the pouch slides onto the cover of a book or planner. The Target website was sold out and I thought I wouldn't be able to find it at the store, so I thought about trying to make one. Until I watched your video, I thought it would be much too difficult, but your brilliant teaching has me feeling empowered and eager to try even though I was able to snag the item at the store a few hours ago. I've watched videos on putting in zippers, but never felt this eager to jump in. THANKS!

I have made many of these in the last few years. I just have made 3 picnic quilts for wedding gifts (another of Jenny's tuts) and decided to make one of these pouches to match each quilt. The newly weds can leave the pouch with quilt in the car always ready for a quick picnic. Thanks Jenny, your tutorials are wonderful!

Frankly I'm amazed. I've watched loads of videos and read lots of instructions for making all sorts of bags over the last year or so - some from equally very well know presenters, and none of them have ever mentioned the tabs for the zips! The tabs give a much neater apperance from sewing over the zip itself and I will be using this idea on all the bags I sew from now on. Thank you so much for the process!

I went looking for a zipper pouch tutorial and kept coming up with things that required snaps and patterns. Then it dawned on me to look at Missouri Star, and it was easy, quick, and came out perfectly. Thanks for everything you do.
I had a wonderful day making pouches for two mats - which I purchased from Missouri Star for my Secret Pal in Book Club - the Rotating Mat ... which I treated myself to one also and I really really enjoy it. When I made the first pouch I had a "fat finger" time getting the zipper pull past the foot ... the next one I made I tied a string onto it and wow did it make it easier - thought others might try this little fat finger fixer. Thank you for your beautiful offerings. We are going to have a craft sale, to defray the pool heaters in our community and I have made several table toppers of your big star (it is in the last book and what a great tutorial) one is just one square and the other is 4 squares. I used the Friendship Star to make another topper it has four stars on it. I wanted it Westerny looking and used good quality bandanas for the stars and the backing is a material called "patches" which made them look wonderful. I have had a lot of fun. Merry Merry Christmas from Florida.
This is so cute and I want to make one for my granddaughter. If they want money for their birthday, because they are saving up for something, I like to make a little something to put the money in. This would be perfect, and then they could use if for their makeup, or anything.
Best pouch video I have seen. Was initially puzzled by the tabs but they look great. I make bags but never thought of making a pouch with a bottom, great idea.

I have rewatched this about 15 times in the last 2 weeks. Only made about 5 pouches, but I'm getting the hang of it!

Thank you for sharing your skills Jenny. I appreciate how easy you were to follow and love that you are so down to earth. I haven't done any sewing for 40 years (and have never done any quilting) so I am really nervous about doing any sewing after all these years. I want to make some small pouches to keep my crochet hook etc for each project I will put in project bags, which I also want to make. I just hope I'm not jumping in the deep end too quickly. If you have any advice for a 64 (almost 65) year old newbie, I would sincerely appreciate it Jenny. Your video was from 6 years ago, so I might never hear from you, but here's hoping anyway xx

When my mom passed she left me the sewing machine, it sat in the closet for years. I didn't know what to do with it. While I am a empty nester now and I started learning , What fun !! I made my first bag today!!!

They DO make great gifts and are ALWAYS appreciated. I made a larger "purse/tote" style bag to my grand-daughters for Christmas.....and put another small bag similar to these bags in coordinating fabrics inside that lager tote. (the older girl will use these small bags for cosmetics....the younger one will use it for small toys, candy, and a little spending money that she was given). To avoid sibling issues: I made exactly the same combo of bags but in different coordinating colors reflecting the preferences of each girl. Rave reviews from both the kids...AND my daughter-in-law!! :-) BTW: I'm NOW planning now to make similar coordinating pieces of THIS project for each of them....this time in a size which they can put their "tablet" into (with extra padding) with a side pocket they can slip their cell-phone into. All will slip neatly into the tote for safe carrying. Such well-received gifts: and I'm also carrying on a tradition of mine for decades of making gifts to give the family....and hoping that by example the tradition will be carried on by others...and a piece of sentiment and appreciation added to each holiday. ~~ RED ☮♡♫
This was a fun tutorial, and very easy to follow. I ended up using just one piece of fabric, rather than scraps, and I quilted squares. It was beautiful. The only thing I didn’t like was that you could still see the raw edges inside, which made it seem unfinished. What I loved most was that she showed how to adjust a zipper length. Thanks!
I agree about the raw edges, I think I may try finishing them with bias tape.

@@fanfam2613 I did see a video on making the same type of pouch that doesn't have raw edges, but it looks more complicated than just adding some bias tape!
I love this tutorial. I have made a couple dozen bags for family members. I also make some smaller ones for keeping bills and change, and driver's license to drop inside a tote when I don't need my whole purse. ---TIP: When putting on the second tab of the zipper, I use a glue stick so there is less chance of them slipping out of place while I sew.
You are such a good Sewing Teacher. I watched so many tutorials on Zipped pouches, and they made it so overcomplicated. I just watched this, your tutorial, and I know I can do it. Such fun.

Watching this brings back great memories. I found MSQC back when it was just Jenny with wonderful teaching videos & I would lay in bed watching them all night long. My husband used to say, "go to sleep!" Next thing you know, he was watching with me! He was sadly killed almost 6 yrs ago now & stumbling across this older video brought me to a happy, but now sad time. 😢 I miss him so much.

Oh, my gosh! I am SO HAPPY that I stumbled on your channel. This is the absolute best sewing tutorial I have seen. You are a great teacher--I'm a public school teacher and have trained teachers in the past--and I truly appreciate your style. I'm not much of a seamstress, but today I saw a Nate Berkus for Target pencil pouch in another video and became obsessed with the design. It's a flat pouch with an industrial zipper on the long edge. There's also a zipped pocket that runs perpendicular to the long zipper. The genius of its design is the half-inch elastic band that's sewn into the short end seams so that the pouch slides onto the cover of a book or planner. The Target website was sold out and I thought I wouldn't be able to find it at the store, so I thought about trying to make one. Until I watched your video, I thought it would be much too difficult, but your brilliant teaching has me feeling empowered and eager to try even though I was able to snag the item at the store a few hours ago. I've watched videos on putting in zippers, but never felt this eager to jump in. THANKS!

I have made many of these in the last few years. I just have made 3 picnic quilts for wedding gifts (another of Jenny's tuts) and decided to make one of these pouches to match each quilt. The newly weds can leave the pouch with quilt in the car always ready for a quick picnic. Thanks Jenny, your tutorials are wonderful!

Frankly I'm amazed. I've watched loads of videos and read lots of instructions for making all sorts of bags over the last year or so - some from equally very well know presenters, and none of them have ever mentioned the tabs for the zips!
The tabs give a much neater apperance from sewing over the zip itself and I will be using this idea on all the bags I sew from now on.

I appreciate the skill of your camera person... is that your husband, still? In any case, the skill of the camera person is to be complimented on. The close in shots are so very very helpful. I have followed enough tutorials to know the difference-- and been down the road of ... ." oh stop wait, I cannot see what you are doing! Your thumb is in the way,...or will you PLEASE SLOW DOWN, I've hit the back button a dozen times already" ... Oh yes, I have been down that road on an important project and to know the relief and feel the trust in you that I will KNOW what to look for and how to avoid tanking the project, is something I wanted to really let you know is: SO VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!! ... OK, I know my comments run long. I just wanted to thank you so much because I make use of the pouch to organize also, it being my effort also to be organized. I absolutely love Jenny's video tutorials. This one is no exception. At first I thought this was a lot more hassle to go through for a zippered pouch. That is until I tried another tutorial. This is one of the easiest tutorial for making a pouch. The instructions are very clear and it is so easy to follow. My go tutorial for making a pouch or purse.
I was watching her iron then I noticed that she left the iron down and I was like Oh NO! the dang thing popped up! that is the coolest iron!

I went looking for a zipper pouch tutorial and kept coming up with things that required snaps and patterns. Then it dawned on me to look at Missouri Star, and it was easy, quick, and came out perfectly. Thanks for everything you do.

I had a wonderful day making pouches for two mats - which I purchased from Missouri Star for my Secret Pal in Book Club - the Rotating Mat ... which I treated myself to one also and I really really enjoy it. When I made the first pouch I had a "fat finger" time getting the zipper pull past the foot ... the next one I made I tied a string onto it and wow did it make it easier - thought others might try this little fat finger fixer. Thank you for your beautiful offerings. We are going to have a craft sale, to defray the pool heaters in our community and I have made several table toppers of your big star (it is in the last book and what a great tutorial) one is just one square and the other is 4 squares. I used the Friendship Star to make another topper it has four stars on it. I wanted it Westerny looking and used good quality bandanas for the stars and the backing is a material called "patches" which made them look wonderful. I have had a lot of fun. Merry Merry Christmas from Florida.
This is so cute and I want to make one for my granddaughter. If they want money for their birthday, because they are saving up for something, I like to make a little something to put the money in. This would be perfect, and then they could use if for their makeup, or anything.
