- In this video I break down the four most common mistakes I see artists making, which I don't want you to make for your next release, whether it be a single or an album.
There's so many things to do as an independent artist in 2022 and it can be an impossible task to keep track of everything, which is why it's important for you to make as few mistakes as possible when you don't have to.

👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I'm Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is deeply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label (dropped 6 months later) and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my CZcams channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, CZcams channel and I work directly with labels internationally alongside owning a live agency and management company.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!
I'm going to answer questions for you below! hit me up :)
My music ready but I'm so broke for any promotion and I'm scared it wont reach people if I release qnyway
I have a question.
Can you see any issues with perhaps making songs on twitch or some other streaming service as a way to gain followers?
I sit most nights making backing tracks for my hip hop. Usually an hour to make one song with drums and bass. Then maybe another hour adding guitars. Very impulsive stuff. No plan when writing. Just make it up as I go along.
I think it would be fun to do. I wouldn't mind getting in front of a camera as I can talk shit for weeks. But as a bonus it could also be an interesting way of gaining new fans.

How important is it to have your release in Dolby Atmos quality? Future proofing our songs seems important if we need to keep managing the songs?
I released one project and already started promoting my new e.p on ig but I don’t feel like that’s enough. How should I promote? I might have to check out Dk academy
I’ve never released any music, because Damien Keyes won’t stop uploading “Don’t Release Anything Until” videos. 😜
Ahahah comment of the day 😂
Excellent thanks you 😂😂😂
😂
*Damian
Sorry 😂
First thing I said, ANOTHER ONE?
"Look at your songs as assets" YEEEES!!! Damian you are a genius, if independent artists began treating songs as assets and managing them as such, they would find an explosion of success waiting to happen. I want to thank you so much for all of your help through the years, I've finally got momentum on spotify and it's thank to you!!! Keep it up, I'll keep watching and learning ❤️
I definitely need to re frame my mentality around this
@@sophiakorz You'll do amazing, just keep putting in the hard work
I am almost 30 years in this business and I have never seen someone explaining the inner works of the industry more bluntly than you do!
it's kinda frustrating sometimes though having to do it all alone! 😂
With 30 years in the business, I hope you've created a community that can support you so you don't have to do it alone!
@@thymeparzival Very hard to find trustworthy people over the internet. I have been in this just under 30 years and I still do not have a circle I would rely on.
I like following some good advice from Damian! I feel that if we start having confidence in ourselves, we'll start attracting more people. I love when someone really resonates with our music. It's the reason to try our best
Songs as asserts is great advice and so true! Just released a music video for a 2 year old song that people had missed out on because it was the last track of our album, and now it's back to life
Always great points and advice from Damian. Thank you for constantly providing great knowledge 🙏🏻
Perfect. I’m getting ready to record my first tracks later this week.🙏🏻
Planning on two big new releases this summer, glad we found this video!
Great video pal. Sadly I think Instagram's reach on sponsored ads has never been less. Feels like pissing into the wind at times
Great content. This information I need to know when I start releasing music. I’m still in the beginner stage but your context makes it easier to know what my next steps are. Thank you for releasing these videos.
Thank you! So glad to help bro
Great video Damo can"t wait for summer to have quit my job (at least partly) and actually put some of all of this into practice.
Awesome video as always peace!
this guy has helped me so much for my 1st EP release, he's giving you a blueprint to follow on how to market music that actually works!
Always really interesting! Frankly, you made my day!
Thanks Damian! great video! I've released 3 singles and 2 videoclips, and was planing about releasing 2 more singles before the full album. But, as I'm new and have not really built a fan base, I'm now thinking about releasing the Full album and begin making microcontent with the album out already, so when someone visits my social media or my spotify, they can listen to the music and hopefully get engaged. I would love to hear your thought about this, and yeah I'm signing into your academy asap!
That’s awesome!! I would deffo release the next two singles, but before doing that I’d work on the micro content game and start planning how to make the absolute most out of them before the album drop 🤟
Great positive way to think about this!
Thanks! Great video!
Thanks alot keyes my name is phil, from Zambia, your videos are always on point👏
Thank you Damian! Great advise as so often. Really appreciate your efforts and commitment. //Simon
Ah thanks Simon, really appreciated
Love you man! Continuous original content, all thought provoking, and more importantly very logical. I thought I had enough on my plate trying to make songs, learning how to mix etc; but then I watch your pesky video again, reminding me I've barely scratched the surface and that A LOT of work needs to be done ;)
First ever set of studio monitors arrived today, so in total inspirado music boner mode.
Nice one dude!!! Keep smashing it
Watching this video sparked an idea for my single. thanks
luv that shirt bro ! Orange headt amp behind you not bas too haha
This video came out at a great time Damian. Really insightful
Really glad to help, thanks Deen
💫 ah, NOW I can see clearly in the night sky. Thank you for sending this asteroid, Damo! 💙
perfect timing, putting together a project for august as we speak :)
Awesome! Good luck 💪

This is powerful stuff!
Thanks dude
Thanks bro!
great video my friend!!
Makes sense😊
Great advice. I have 59 published songs right now. And have no idea how to get more listeners. The submitting for Spotify playlists earlier is something I never thought of... Will do... Going to follow your vids... Us musicians are terrible at promotion haha...Cheers
Hello Damian ! Superb video once again, thank you so much ! Just had 1 question, in general (but especially using FB ads), should we always push the people to listen our song through Spotify or does it work well to push them on CZcams to the music video ? What's the best strategy ? Thank you ! ✌
This is great!!! The easiest way to feel is that you are bothering people by pushing the same song constantly. The worst way to think!
You’re the man. 👍🎶
Too kind bro!

Micro content are the breadcrumbs that lead from public social media to a your curated platform. If you're not guiding people somewhere, they won't go anywhere. But if your "guidance" is too heavy handed, it will feel less authentic and more like an advertisement, which most people scroll past. Finding the right balance is key as you start dialing in your media strategy.
nice flannel shirt, swagged out

Greetings, Damian! With my melodic death metal band, we are preparing for a comeback after 5 years of silence. Our new album's mixing-mastering will be done next month and we plan to reactivate our social media in October and we are looking at a March album release (preceded by 2 singles, 1 in February and 1 in January). By looking at your content so far, I made a rough plan incorporating your 22-step plan for the first single, a fewer-days plan for the second single (some things will have been taken care of from the first single release) and then a similarly laid out plan for the album release.
However, I don’t know if that is a sound strategy, as I have the impression that in the way you present it, those singles are treated as an independent release and not preparing the audience for an album. Is there a plan that you would suggest for a “2 singles followed by an album” release? It seems to be kind of the norm in the metal industry and I am too afraid the audience may become worn out by ~3 months of continuous "prepare-boom, launch-prepare again-boom, launch."
Yes. I can only say that. Forget everyone, huge profits from the sale of sheet music.
DVD, music platforms? Great .
If the children or young people
want everything for free?
no
You take your star home.
Every star, every good band, every good musician has a contract with a publisher.
Real publisher which prints and sells music in paper sheet music as PDF.
Then you have your star in your room.
I've just released my summer single today
Managed to make 40+ micro content vids for TikTok, Shorts & Reels. (Still making more)
Also sending it to
100+ YT channels
750+ Spotify Playlists
50+ online radios
Also spending £500 on social media Ad's.
This is my first time really trying to promote my song and spending money on it. So hopefully it goes well.
(Also I did a pre save/pre release campaign) .
Love the intro video for the topic. Was that made in house?
That is all stock footage! 🤟😊
Nice again
I work as producer/rapper and i found about 2 years my best friend and singer that i work within, we did everything that was in the video and i can say that works but everything needs time, patience and friends that believe in your work and help you pass through the hard time(when you feel that you're not good enough) but one option that inst in the video is to perform your music in lives and shows . We've paid 3 thousand dollars for 2 months to one manager in colombia to get us shows , tv interview, radios interview and even collaborations with artist in colombia that make us look more professional and got a loot contacts from artist and midia but before you tried this i highly recommend that you have good songs to perform, base fans , CZcams,Spotify, instagram, website, to maximize every new followers that come from every event that you do and participate and the most important thing its friends to be there for you and help you through hard moments that absolutely going to have . My friend is Kristian J and his best song is Restart and many others and within 2 years we got 2 albums released and 4 music videos that the beginning the quality wanst thst good but from our last video released is totally different and were not the level of the big one's but we know at we're too and we keep pushing and get better and i know this year we going to be even more . Kristian J guys take a look and i know for sure that you won't regret. Kristian J - Restart .
How do you suggest the best way to promote yours?
A lot of songs not getting content id for CZcams is the issue for me. Like damn, seems like all of the sounds real estate is already taken up.
True man! And that pain when an album doesn't qualify.... Then the explanation from the distributor that your songs are supposedly good but not unique enough 🤨😑
Can you do a video on the smartest way to use a budget of 50$/500/1000 to promote a new single?
If i make a snippet and share it on instagram where should I post the link of the song? In the reel description?
Thank you for this encouraging video and channel. I'm a brand-new emerging artist with an incredible album (11 original songs), a website, and a couple music videos. My awareness entry point is very low. Based on your advice: I will start creating regular micro-content and also invest in a small amount of advertising to my core audience.
My short term goal: I want to build momentum and help people listen/be aware of my music/brand and share it with friends. My long term musical success goal is for 1,000 true fans in 4 years. My question for you: What are the best CTA (call to actions) for me in this "awareness" phase of career? Is there a way to identify and reward fans for listening and sharing my music? Thank you so much!
To be a successful musician does it matter the place where you live? London? Nashville? LA? Seattle? What about Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Milan?
Yes and no. Experience wise, being in a good music hub city is amazing. There’s nowhere on Earth like Nashville for example.
But you don’t have to, you can build online from anywhere, but it does mean you need to play the online game more then the offline game
best 11 minutes ive spent on youtube
I am confused as to where getting content seen and heard translates into selling physical product and making a living! Is there an artist/band reading this who can confirm by spending time and money on a targeted campaign has put them in profit and ability to earn a livelihood?? THANKS 😊❤️
💙⚡♥️
So if my bucket has many holes does that mean it’s Holy?
If your chorus is Longer than 15 seconds should you cut it? Cause mines 23 and I already posted it on tik tok
My friends listen to this so much they have songs over a year or two old they haven’t dropped but at this point they are better artists so the old songs are not the best representation. Which is clearly good and or bad
I'm looking forward to what amplifier he uses in the back drop to match his next videos shirt.....
Haha! Next weeks video is actually about making a backdrop as im in LA for a couple of months in an Airbnb starting from a white wall!
@@DamianKeyes all good big sir just havin a lil chuckle, your still a legend....keep on trucking big sir 💓
are u re releasing your own material? Didn't you post this a few months back? I actually followed what you said and re issued two old albums, as you're right, its only old when you say it is
Nope I did an ads one about not running ads, but not the same as this one 😊
That’s awesome you re issued two albums! Love that!
Hey Damian, going to release my first song ever , I have zero fans. Any advice on release? Does waiting four weeks on Spotify even matter at this stage ? Or shall I just start dropping songs now and begin to stir up attention
?
start postin on tiktok
Awareness entry point is something im struggling with too. Idk what im doing wrong.
It takes a lot of time and testing to work out what’s working and why, so don’t panic, just change it up and see what takes. Spend a couple of hours researching what other people are doing and think about why it might be working 🤟
Can we get a video - "How to release an album in 2022"?
Hi please I'm Planning to release a music what distribution webpage you recommend to me , Free and not cost me much money
I put out one song a week and when I get about an hour I put out an album, I just started this year, have one album out already and am finishing up the second. I am on youtube and rumble, I can manage one more, as I do everything by myself, what would be your suggestion for the next one I pick up?
Awesome, it’s all about micro content at the moment so I would go for TikTok and Reels. It’s a learning curve but the organic reach is there :)
@@DamianKeyes appreciate your time, sir perhaps when you have time you can catch some of my videos. Will keep watching.
So it would be good to put a little snipet of my song on tik tok before it comes out? Like a snippet music video only 15 seconds? Even though no one can buy it?
Definitely! It’s all about awareness and the build
@@DamianKeyes do you just wait for people to inbox you to tell em where and when to buy it? Or should you put it in the bio?
And if you publish music please use singo :D
The Beatles watching this video, in shambles...
I get that building "fomo" around your song makes people want to listen more and wait for the release... But if you're totally unknown as an artist, like zero followers should you still make time for promos and snippets before release ? I would think people would quickly forget about you when they can't hear the full track ? Also the traffic is very low on your social media so is it just a waste of time, and something you should wait doing until you have a small following ?
Am I wrong on the math here, but 1000 bucks for 1 000 000 view at 0.12 cent a view = 120 000 bucks for 1000 ?
damian can you help me godbless.
Your Bond villain analogy wasn't far from the truth. Merck Merculiadis' Hipgosis group is also owned by Blackstone for which former Pfizer CEO Jeffrey Kindler was the chairman. The rabbit hole runs deep. This is why our so called rebellious, beloved rock n roll 'idols' don't speak out against the jab. The whole thing is as sketchy as heck.
🗯
my problem has been what you call "The call to action" the views and listens trickle along for me at reasonable rate but ideally a bit more would be great. My best display value wise I think? Live performance and audience engagement both live and online. But the follows don't equate to strrams or sales and vice versa.
I've posted a video of me playing live at the Waterbear Venue in Brighton I posted it a fortnight ago and somehow (I've still no clue why) within a few days it was over 1k views. How? Honestly I have no idea. It's not the greatest footage its shot in 1080 on an old phone. Also my recent EP garnered really great feedback but now what? combined I'm at a loss.
I tried Tik Tok and found it nauseatingly cheesy and cheap feeling. So have stuck with Instagram and that grows monthly with follows.
So good right?
