We had a good weather window here in Maine in early October so Jim and I ran the 25 miles to the north end of Jefferies ledge. Unlike previous trips this year finding the schools of keeper haddock proved difficult. We spent most of our day catching cod, pollock and dog fish that congregate on the ledged this time of year. As always I had out a bait roughly 30 feet off bottom for sharks, halibut or tuna. We hooked into a decent sized thresher shark but the 90lb fluorocarbon I use when targeting halibut and tuna did not hold up against its teeth for more than 20 min. I switched over to cable and we caught a few blue sharks. We found the haddock on the far north end in roughly 170 feet of water and managed 9 keepers before calling it a day around 1pm. The dolphins we encountered on the ride our where gray sides but we did not see any whales which is strange for this time of year.

@@StriperScott sounds like you’re ready for some
bromance
What like do you put on your tuna/shark rod?
Live mackerel
By the way, how big is the boat? What would you say is minimum for offshore in Maine?
I run a 23ft mako. Easy enough to handle by myself but big enough to run the 25/30 miles to Jeffrey's on the right day. I've seen 20ft boats out there plenty of times. It's all about picking the right weather days, usually later spring early summer. Weather man isn't always right and I usually have a back up plan to fish inshore if it's too choppy on the way out. I also recommend buddy boating with another boat thats been out or even going on a weekend your first few times. There will be pleanty of other boats out there.
@@FishingWithBoyt Mako is a great boat! Now how is the inshore fishing up in Maine? It is a meme that it aint that great? Decades ago my father and I rented a 13' whaler in Bar Harbor and had a blast. with mackerel and harbor pollock. Have things dried up?
It is terrible. The blues show up for 3 weeks every August, the 40 inch stripers showed up in April and stayed till October, bagged a halibut 3 years ago and I see tog and winter flounder diving all the time.
@@FishingWithBoyt Hell, I moving to Maine! :) Didn't realize you got tog (called Blackfish down here).
This spring 4 guys out of New Hampshire in a similar sized boat were lost going out the the ledges.
How far off shore did you guys go?
23-26 miles
Where are you in maine because I go out of Portsmouth
The launch out of Pine Point in Scarborough
What type of boat do you have?
23 ft mako
Are you using a 30w or a 50w reel?
Penn 50 internationals
@@FishingWithBoytdo you use a 2 speed model or just the single?
@samwhipple4550 I'm confused by the question. If you are asking about the drag system it is an adjustable leaver drag
Leave the sharks alone.
You're not my real dad!
Turn that darn clicker off
gotta have something to wake the crew up
@@FishingWithBoyt yea but you can turn it off at anytime and save us headphone users it was cool af to see that mako
