- Hey guys, in this video I'll be sharing the Estonia's most scenic trip I've recently done. These are my 3 reasons to visit Tallinn and stay longer. Welcome to my 5 days in Tallinn. Worth doing this trip in 2021, when we're allowed again.

Have you guys ever been to the Baltics? Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia... All of them are stunning 💪 Also just to clarify, Estonia gained its independence in 1918 and *re* gained it in 1991. There's no wi-fi in forests but you can use your internet dongle to catch internet there. These points were not clear in the video and they are important!

Thank you very much Valdemar! Yep, it's truly a beautiful country. Hopefully I can see more of it in the future. Might take advantage and visit Finland on the same trip. Last time I was in Finland was in 2010/2011... long time ago! :)
Of course Estonian culture isn't anything like Russian. They were occupiers (therefore, our people naturally felt opposed to it) and that occupation was fairly short.. especially if you only talk about Soviet Union's occupation (and we should because Russian Empire was culturally very advanced compared with Soviet Union). Estonia has always been culturally unique and closest to Nordic countries. Some 60 years of oppressive regime doesn't change that. Sure, Soviet Union was a stagnating force on our economy, culture and even just people, but Estonians have been strong through all the hardships and through more than just one occupation, so yeah, we survive and flourish again now as we are free. Russian culture was always alien to Estonians and from the start it was an invading culture, because when Slavs migrated northwards, our Finno-Ugri peoples were already settled here and had unique culture, lived in peace and prosperity. And then Slavs just came and started taking lands and forcing their ways and their culture on our peoples. That's why today, most of the Finno-Ugri peoples are just incorporated in Russia and have lost their own culture and language. We Estonians are one of the last to resist and preserve our ancient culture and people. And while many Finno-Ugri peoples fell, we Estonians will always resist Russian imperialism and their alien culture and keep our own alive and improving it.. making it more visible and richer in every way.
By the way Alejandro Salvino , your pronunciation of place names is really good. We are used Brits and Americans and Russians absolutely butcher our names and words, so your pronunciation was such a good surprise

Everything is very well put. But I ant to say one thing: to become Nordic, we still have a long way to go. Especially in our mentality. The Nordic countries are welfare societies, with a very different view on human-human relationship and helping everyone who has some hardship on life, than we do. Although most people in Estonia are relatively well off, we are by no means a welfare society in our mentality. Life is great here as long as you are young, well off and healthy and have a lot of friends. Once something happens to you, the society does very little to help and even when id does, it is rubbed on your nose constantly about how grateful you should be, even if it is a very small amount of support for a few months and your contribution to the Estonian society has been big enough to completely deserve help a few times during your lifetime. Concerning this attitude (everyone must fend for themselves), we are very far from being Nordic. And it seems to me more and more that we are not even really trying. As long as the country statistically looks good. And it does

lovley video, but people keep getting the estonian culture wrong. Estonian culture has originally nothing to do with russia and didn't begin in 1991 with the independence movement. In 1991 the independence was RE-gained from soviet union who occupied us for 50 years. In fact the oldest estonian settlement "Pulli" was from around 8500 BC. Estonian culture is wayyy older and has nothing to do with russia, besides some small russian influence here and there from the violent 50 year occupation.

@@AleSalvino Estonia has centuries long history being multi-cultural/language society. Slavic influence is been here to from ancient times, even old folklore and ancient traditions have some mix-ins. We also have buildings from Russian Empire times (while in reality still served kinda autonomous province, under more dominant Germanic influence -- upper-class). But that's the thing, those are just influences not conversion. Most visible Slavic influence being buildings, and personally I feel in contrast of Germanic, Nordic, Cristian, Finnic and Baltic influences, Slavic influence being weakest/alien of them all (but it is here - undoubtedly).

This lecture also might explain why Sweden king at the time thought peasants in Estonia being his subjects -- under protection)

This is another beautiful video, Ale. Once again, you give us a different perspective on a place that was just a name before. Parts of Tallinn reminds me of the town here in Germany I am going to be in later on today. The salaries are the worst part about living in Estonia though. Other than that, it's sublime. But yeah, the salaries make Estonians go to Finland for a job.

Yes, I visited Tallinn for the first time in February 1974, then we went by bus to Tartu. We had a tasty lunch
somewhere as a Swedish table /buffet/; intelligent and friendly local people towards us, young Moldavian students.
Unforgettable memories. Taking a coffee at Pegasus Restaurant. Pirita sunset. Oleviste Kirik. Estonia was
an example to other former soviet occupied territories how to resist foreign Russian communist invasion.

Glad to hear you had great memories there, it was the same for me, fantastic place, friendly people and I'd love to see more of Estonia :) You're also right that they are another example of fighting for freedom against the Soviet Union!

I'm Estonian by birth, but spent the past nearly 20 years abroad in Cyprus and England. And have recently returned to Estonia for many of those reasons mentioned here. Most importantly- can't beat clean air. But hush! Don't tell anyone- or it'll get crowded here soon 😏🍉

Hey, glad to hear you're visiting Estonia! It's a beautiful country :) If you have AmEx there's definitely a lot of opportunities to transfer your points to your hotel membership (i.e. Marriott) or to your airline so either have some free nights in the hotels or save on your flight ticket. This is something you might want to check. On Visa/Master I'm not too sure the latest perks but on AmEx worth checking how you can convert your Member Points to hotel/flights. If you're a frequent flyer I'm sure you also have access to different lounges but if not worth exploring the Priority Pass card in case you have few stopovers or need to work from the airports or just chill.. it's cool. Let me know if you have more specific questions or there's a particular membership you want me to help with. I'm more familiar with AmEx, Marriott and OneWorld related topics.

actually we do.. what you just don't have in forest is a mobile internet router or modem, buuut technically entire Estonia is covered with wifi.. and as i worked in that field myself some years ago, i can proudly say, that is also partly thanks to me ;). I can use my phone to surf internet everywhere but some basements with really thick walls. I definitely can use internet anywhere in forests. The fact that you are using mobile data, doesn't change the fact that you can get to internet everywhere. That is not the case in most other countries. That is literally what wireless internet IS

I am British, Scottish actually, and my wife of 21 years is Estonian. We are planning on packing up here and going to live in Tallinn. My wife got a job back in Tallinn in May this year. Of course, I've been there many times but there's just one negative bit - you can't get British newspapers!!😪😪😪!

Hi Francesco, thank you so much for watching! Tallinn is covered by special Zone 9 near the airport. You have to submit the application for the flying permit (it used to be 55 euros or so) and also attend a free informational hour about flying in Zone 9 before the application is accepted. It's a bit of an admin thing unfortunately but makes sense given the proximity to the airport. If you go to ecaa . ee there's a section about how to operate UA/drone and it's explained. Hope that helps and all the best in your trip!

How you made the drone footage?
Hi Gimmy, DJI Mavic Pro is a good one. I always take it to my trips and when sometimes my footage doesn't look so good due to weather conditions/exposure or just other issues, I work in post processing to improve it as much as possible. It happened few times I had issues with my footage or literally didn't have footage at all and in those cases I'd go to stock websites only as emergency 🙂 Hope it helps
Which camera are you using for videos?
it depends on the context, but generally Sony A7III and A7SIII are my go-to ground cameras, when I really want to do some quick just my iPhone, then Mavic Air 2 drone and GoPro Hero (hybrid). I put my whole kit here: kit.co/alesalvino let me know if any questions! 📸

im estonian, not sure about the "wifi in the forest lol" yeah we have alot of wifi spots in shops n eating places(open wifi), but most of the wifi that we have is locked, so im always kinda sus ab the "free wifi" thing

@@AleSalvino , we have wifi in the whole country in Finland so i assume it's the same in Estonia. And as both countries, and many more on this planet have also forests there is wifi in the forests too, how else could it ever work.

A little correction: Wifi is not everywhere. Another myth.
Yes, 50-75% of our territory is forest. Depending on what you actually consider a forest. And the forests are very accessible. 99% public property and it would take max an hour to get to a deep old forest from Tallinn city centre. Also, all coastal areas are public property. 100 meters on the seaside and 50 meters on the shores of all lakes and rivers have to accessible to everyone. Even if some of it has by some mistake become private property, the owner has to allow unlimited public access there 24/7. We have the mentality here that everything that has value has to be owned by the general public and be accessible to all. But the Wifi in the forest... not really. Unless you have your own internet connection.
Internet is NOT considered a human right. But it is true that we have more wifi available than other countries on average. And it is always free. Wifi actually means "wireless free internet" When some hotel or whatever uses the "free wifi" argument to market itself it is nonsense because by definition wifi is free.
And most importantly: we are not Russia or in way Russian. Unfortunately we just have them for a neighbour

Hey guys! I might get a job offer in Tallinn. What do you thinl about the life style? Is it too boring? Are people reserved? Especially, how is the expat life?
Never lived there as expat so hard to say. On the other hand, my wife is Lithuanian and I spent a lot of time in Lithuania, not too far from Estonia! People are more reserved yes but once you get to know them, they're very fun people and want to make you feel comfortable. It's hard to generalise on these things. At least in the circle I've always been, I felt comfortable. On the other hand, learning the language would be an advantage to integrate better in the society. For how long is your offer? From my trips, I've felt Tallinn as multicultural and one of the best IT/Tech hubs in Europe. Surely it might be interesting to have a professional experience there. Hope you enjoy it!
If you expect a strong British expat community with "sausage anglese" and a "upper lip" and all of that, don't bother.

There is no way you can grasp Tallinn, let alone Estonia, in a few days. Also, we are not really Baltic. We do not identify with that at all, not psychologically, not socially, not economically, not culturally, not in any way. We are just Estonia. The Baltic countries are always referred to as one country or at least one culture. But we are three very different countries
estonians get really offended if people think that we are anything like soviet russia, people get even offended if they get called eastern europe :D when we got our freedom in 1991 then even the color red was too offensive and was removed from everywhere :D if you think that estonians are being scrwéwed all the time, vikings coming...then came crussade , then danish came and then we hade little battle with russians and we gained our independence tthen Stalin decided that "f*ck this, I am going to bomb and occupy and deport you " then nazis came for a moment and then mother russia came again and stayed in our little island until 1991...you can really see why estonians dont like strangers...

As estonian i get offended when Estonia is called Norther country , we are formost Estonians unique. Geograpchically we belong to Baltics but culturally we have alot of similaritys with Northern countrys but still we are Estonia, not some nameless Northern State.
In my opinion it’s time to let Estonia be a nice small Nordic country. Estonia very deserves to be a Nordic country, because Estonia has done a lot of work, we have many smart people, we are good at digital things, we have northern lights and we are very similar to Finland and other Nordic countries like: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Greenland. We are not similar to Latvia and Lithuania and the other Eastern Europe countries. It’s time to stop calling Estonia Eastern Europe country and Baltic country and forget all this terrible, rude and mean Soviet times. Let’s just stop this Eastern Europe and Soviet stigma thing and let Estonia turn the new page and let them be a normal small Nordic country next to Sweden and Finland!!! Estonians call themselves the Nordic country and many other people and tourists had also said that Estonia should be a Nordic country, because Estonian people are Finnic people not Balts and we are more similar to Scandinavia. Yes many people had agreed with that Estonia must belong to the Nordic group and seperate from Latvia and Lithuania. They don’t even need these countries, because Estonians communicate more with Finns and other Scandinavian countries. Estonia will be a very good partner for the other Nordic countries. We will do a very great work and we will be very strong!!!
The forest wifi info is total BS. There has never been wifi in the forests. I don't know where this stupid rumor even got started. Also Skype is not an estonian company - the company was started by a swede and a dane.

Regarding Skype, I heard the four main developers of the original software were Estonian and I guess that's probably why but I agree the founders are not Estonian, what a paradox! :) Thanks again!

Skype's division headquarters are in Luxembourg, but most of the development team and 44% of all the division's employees are still situated in Tallinn and Tartu, Estonia.
And the country is covered by wireless internet. Yes, you don't have a router attached to a push somewhere but name a forest where we you can't use your mobile data. Whereas there are countries where in some remote areas you can't use your cellphone for calls. That's the difference.
@@Whodey-AJ wifi is not the same as mobile internet. And skype is still not an estonian company. If I hire bunch of coders form India, that doesn't make my company an indian company. And there are a lot of forest areas in Estonia, where you can't even get mobile internet despite telia, elisa and tele2 all claiming that they have country wide coverage. Not to mention wifi in the forests.
I love my country, but I just don't want to encourage misconceptions and misinformation. There are a bunch of real estonian companies, that are successful like Bolt, Transferwise or Skeleton technologies, but Skype is not one of them.
We are the most digitally advanced country in the world, but what they don't talk about is that all of these digital government systems are legacy systems, that the modern IT world left behind 10 years ago. We started so early with our digitalization that that our sytems are ancient and probably need to be fully replaced sooner or later.
Investors were from scandinavia, but Skype was made 100% by estonians (same guys who made KaZaa).
Forget the Aleksander Nevski monster, just forget it people. This is such a bad idea for a Russian huge church to be in our most sacred place on Toompea. It was built during Russification period and has been almost taken down a coupe of times. I wish it was taken down. It also has no architectural value. It is just a new, ugly Russian church which has no business being there. Some other place, far away from the Old Town, fine.
