- The generous dudes at The Skid Factory were kind enough to throw us the keys to their latest project to find out how it stacks up on a 0-100 acceleration test.
It was awesome to see the car in person and this little MR2 with the 20v 4A-GE has turned out to be a very fun little package. The ITBs make some beautiful music during the runs as well!

Driving slow cars fast is still one of the greatest experiences in the automotive world.
I learnt to flat shift in a Hyundai Excel X3 1.5l, that car still brings back memories. Pop the air box and any petrol head is going to have a good time winding out the gears.
Same for motorcycles. I find it way scarier than modern high horsepower bikes. 😅
I went from a 700+hp Mercedes AMG to a 1973 Fiat 127 toy with 70hp, my mates thought I went nuts, it was the best driving fun I had in years, 6:1 gear ratio, shifting @10,000rpm, weighed 600kgs wet, max speed due to gearing 120kph, was so much fun, stop light racer.
Sooo true, it's the extended journey that's exciting 😄
I love my 07 1.8 Honda great mid range torque for back road rippin with 5 speed

@@ZeroTo60Tube no worries thank you, I had a little FXGT with the 4age and would do about the same 0-60 time mine had good sincros in second so you could red line it in first and dump it in to second no worries 😂

Man, this is something so different to what we are used to playing with. Had such a blast with it, and to be fair it's pretty quick off the line.

My guess was mid 7s, I was surprised to see it going into the 6s. Must be a fun car to drive.
And with two passengers at that! I have the same setup and even though I have a newer sports car, the MR2 is always a treat when I go for a cruise.

There's nothing like that natural induction sound when the throttle bodies are wide open. Who remembers the V8 carbie days when the secondaries of a 4 barrel opened up? BOOORRRP.
Did you ever see or hear a Ford V8 with the Autolite 4 barrel inline carbs? I was lucky enough to see one years ago in a historic race - it was a Boss 302 engine with two of them fitted - ye gods that was the most glorious noise I ever heard. Those Ford Autolite inline carbs are rare, and cost a bloody fortune these days. Alan Moffats old Coke Mustang with the quad webers makes a pretty fantastic noise too. Multi-throated induction is pretty hard to beat for how it sounds I reckon.
Holy s*!t, 6.8 seconds is outstanding for the output. Great job Woody and John on the engine build, shes a really little screamer.
I used to have a RenaultSport Clio 172 on Jenvey throttles. Was 118kW atw and 1100kg. B14 coilovers, sticky tyres. Was a weapon. That noise was so addictive from the F4R and it had 220,000km on it and was unopened. Thrashed that car everywhere. It had home made mesh filters so was incoherently loud.

Great video! Like a go kart! I had a 92 MR2 turbo 3SGTE with an LSD in the early 00’s, loved that car. With increased boost and high flow exhaust I would beat unsuspecting WRX’s, so much fun!
Years ago I had a hillclimb Gemini with a Z16 fully built engine, twin webers, big cam, cosworth valve springs, forged pistons, balanced everything, the whole bit. I was dyno'd at Rallyequip back in the day at 175 whp. We timed that car in the low 6s for 0 - 100. It was lighter than the MR2 at 920kg, and had a Japanese 4.11 diff so it pulled really hard from launch, but it was only an 8 valve head, and carbs, and wasn't really designed for standing start acceleration runs, so a low 6 should be easily attainable for the MR2 I reckon. Keep at it.

I saw one today, used to roll my eyes atthem when I was the 'cool' kid cruising about in a ta22.

Sounds so good. I'd like to see the time with just 1 person in the car. I'd bet on high 5's.
the factory supercharged cars did 0-60 in 6.5 and quarter mile in 15 flat. immediate torque, auto SC bested the F40 from 0-30 making it the fastest car to run that sprint that year (Car and Driver I believe). the NA cars did mid 8s. All in optimal conditions, of course.
Not to mention, t top SC cars were quite heavy and US cars had lots of heavy crash beams

Back in the day I had one of these with the 16 valve engine. Other than some exhaust work and a full body aero kit it was stock. I never felt it was particularly slow. Also to me it had go kart feeling handling.

Hot dam i was not expecting a sub 7 0-100. Also didn't expect it to top 110km in 2nd. Thats an awesome little car and woody done a good job on it

20v you have to hold that pedal down. You can usually flat shift it at 7500+ rpm . They would have put a 8500 engine limit in the tune. It did take me sometime to get use to a engine that doesn't start to get going until you are over the 5500 rpm range. Great job and have subscribed
Your absolutely right, I used to own a Levin fwd 20v silver top and used to love revving past that 5000-5500rpm although the guys in the video sound like they are changing gear to early but without knowing when the 20v kicks in and no tachometer it can't be helped but still really cool 😎

The car is even faster when you don't have another full grown man in the seat next to you. You're adding like 8% of the full weight of the car.

My Daihatsu L700 that weighs like 800kg's with a GTVi 1.3L 4 banger does mid to late 7's factory kw to the crank is like 80kw or so #smolcarbois

Hey, that’s exactly what I have...an ‘87 with 20v and velocity stacks
Perfect conditions... great tires, 1 person, etc... I’d say mid 5s. I had a slightly more powerful (integra type-r swap) 192whp NA Civic back in the late ‘90s. It would do front-wheel-drive-traction-limited low 5s on street.

Mr2's launch well as the weights over the back wheels, owned a few, my SW20 Mr2 GT turbo could launch like a wrx
I had a GTS Turbo and it would launch stupidly hard in the dry. Awesome car, though a bit of a PITA to work on.

Yes, first will get to 60, second just over 100. Be prepared to replace the synchros if you do it too often.
If the tachometer was working, id say 6.2s is very possible to achieve, provided the driver shifts perfectly at 8250rpm.
Mr2 with 4agze goes in 6.5 second thats the one with compressor.
In the skid factory video woody telling Al to go easy on the car....these guys just thrash the piss out of it..
We were given specific instructions from woody to do so.... And we still never found the rev limiter. Its amazing what those throttle bodies sounds like.

6,8s 0-100 is pretty amazing time IMO.
Very impressive when tested in these conditions. We have gone slower with 400bhp skylines.

It would, but unfortunately would loose the amazing sound of the ITBs.
Bro you guys are revving it up to like 7k and shifting WTF I own a I/H/E AE101 20v and I hit mid 6s... stock everything else I think this MR2 should easily break the 6 second mark with it being wrung out
Need to get used to the 20v boys, take that baby all the way to 8000rpm
I can't remember if we mentioned it in the vid, but this was filmed before the tacho working, so we were a little concerned about over revving the engine...... Would have felt so bad if we broke something.

Agreed. tHe "poor mans Ferrari" is a title that really belongs to the Fiat X19. It has no place on an MR2. It's not even Italian.
The poor man's ferrari bullshit mostly came from people who couldn't afford an MR2 and as people have a tendency to do...they hurled out whatever slur they thought would hurt the most and it mostly stuck. Anyone that actually had an MR2 didn't give a shit and likely just thought that jealousy was pretty amusing.
I ended up here due to the skid factory, but I want a crack at guessing the 0 to 100 hmmm 8.3 its a big call for a small car with two blokes in it but I'm confident 😚
Because it's a small car that has to have it from it's weight, and there's 2 of you I'm going to guess around 7 seconds. This thing revs idioticly high (redline at 8300) so if you rev it hard enough it should make it.
Ae86 with 20v do mid 6's but having a passenger makes it alot slower.
Yeah with a tach I bet you could have had better shifts. You can push them 9000 rpm. MR2's are nuts.

Does this car have the 6-speed or the original 5-speed? HUGE difference between the 2. I did the 6-speed conversion in my 86 even though it still had the 4-valve engine.
