Hitchens is the epitome of dedication to knowledge. To start out with just a graduate in philosophy to becoming one of the most revered and feared journalists, political activist and public intellectuals on the planet is a colossal achievement that should be respected, irrespective of if you agreed with him or not
Helps when your family is wealthy enough to send you to boarding school, and subsequently get you into Oxford, my man. I believe he himself, said as much.
They were hardly wealthy. Lower-Middle class is what they would be then and now. His father was a naval officer, so likely they - Peter and Christopher - had scholarships and bursaries to help with attending private school. He recalls his mother and father arguing over his schooling one evening .. his father saying they didn’t have the money. They stretched an awful lot to get him to private school. Like a lot of parents do, both here and in the U.K.
@@HaggardPillockHD I’m from the U.K. and attended boarding school. I would envisage his Dad had a hefty bursary for being military. I Saw a person wrote that we miss Hitchens more than ever! In a sense I do agree, but come on! I think hitchens would be proud if more people join the “dangerous” fight against religion. As long you can claim anything without evidence it’s easy to see especially women being treated as a second class individual. And priest are being treated as very important person. This was a tough gig for poor Brian. Hitch seems either under the weather, hung over, or both and York's style is incredibly succinct. None of this is conducive to very engaging conversation. Add to this numerous, very odd sounding callers, many who seem intent on bashing C-SPAN. I bet he was glad to wrap this one up.
