    Hitchens is the epitome of dedication to knowledge.
    To start out with just a graduate in philosophy to becoming one of the most revered and feared journalists, political activist and public intellectuals on the planet is a colossal achievement that should be respected, irrespective of if you agreed with him or not

      Helps when your family is wealthy enough to send you to boarding school, and subsequently get you into Oxford, my man. I believe he himself, said as much.

    • @Alex-mj5dv
      @Alex-mj5dv Před rokem +12

      They were hardly wealthy. Lower-Middle class is what they would be then and now. His father was a naval officer, so likely they - Peter and Christopher - had scholarships and bursaries to help with attending private school. He recalls his mother and father arguing over his schooling one evening .. his father saying they didn’t have the money. They stretched an awful lot to get him to private school. Like a lot of parents do, both here and in the U.K.

      @@Alex-mj5dvdo you know how much boarding school costs in the UK? They were hardly lower middle class

    • @Alex-mj5dv
      @Alex-mj5dv Před 9 měsíci +4

      @@HaggardPillockHD I’m from the U.K. and attended boarding school. I would envisage his Dad had a hefty bursary for being military. Again, not to absolve the cost absolutely, but it used to happen even when I was at school (I’m mid-thirties now). They obviously sacrificed everything to send Christopher firstly to boarding school .. as Hitch said it was the biggest argument he heard them have, when his father was lamenting the cost, and saying it was unaffordable.. his mother Yvonne turned and said ‘if there is an upper class in this country, then Christopher will be a part of it’. She thought - rather like Pip or Eliza Doolittle, it was a route in. And possibly it was in a way. But that reaction belied what the Hitchens family was - lower to mid Middle class. Perhaps yes, they put the Mid in Middle Class. But to follow from this, upper class here means something different to the US - where it’s mainly fiscal and income based. Upper Class here is titles, old money, landed gentry. Aristocracy basically. Like the Spencer’s.. some of them make the royal gene pool look wholly varied, and most are more ‘posh’ than the royal family themselves. Whatever it means to be that.

    I Saw a person wrote that we miss Hitchens more than ever! In a sense I do agree, but come on! I think hitchens would be proud if more people join the “dangerous” fight against religion. As long you can claim anything without evidence it’s easy to see especially women being treated as a second class individual. And priest are being treated as very important person. Above the average person! This is an idiotic way and as most can see a common reason for serious problems. If religion were harmless I wouldn’t say one word- but I think religion is one of the most dangerous thing among all of humanities problems. We need to solve problems together. But religious people will never evolve as long they never accept science as the best way to describe reality!
