I found the original a little better because the words seemed a little more .... clipped.... in this version they seem to blend a little more from word to word. But still very nice.
They do no justice to the masterpiece performed by Alison Moyet and penned by Vince Clark. They managed to turn a brilliant pinnacle of the 80's into elevator music by reducing the arrangement to nothing but a progression and removing all memorable analog hooks that were originally woven into this composition.
I guess i have to agree! The discreet lines are washed over in chord strums. However, it's not all bad. There is an innocence about it. I think by omitting the harmonies entirely, the Gregorian style DOES come out here--spiritually, as it were. They chose this melody for a reason, and in some strange way, think they have transmitted the emotion here. They also stay true to the original key of A major. Indigo. A key of grounding and self-reflection. Of being WITH one's self.
