    PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING. Hi everyone, I've decided I'm going to reshoot this video in the new year when Im back filming again, its just annoying me too much to have so many people whining about the length constantly.
    We all have different opinions on this, my personal one is that you're getting something quality for free and if you don't like it you can move on to another video with one click but as I say not everyone seems to share this view. I'm going to leave it up in the interim however in case anyone comes on wanting to learn it but if you do come one and are genuinely upset by the length you really don't need to let me know, Ive already taken it into account and it will be dealt with.
    Will

      You are sharing knowledge others do not possess. Explain all you want. If the complainers do not want to hear your helpful commentary, let them learn the song by ear themselves which I feel sure will not be spot on as your lesson seems to be.

      people are complaining about the videos length? you've got be kidding.. this video is the best lesson for this solo I've seen so far, so there's absolutely no need to redo it. there's no shortcuts in learning guitar either, it takes a lot of dedication and TIME.

      I remember back in the 90s when I spent DAYS picking every note by ear from cassette tapes... having to go back and forth for hours, to get to play one song of, say, Black Sabbath.

Jimmy...who knew what he was thinking or trying to pull off, but the spirit of the solo is the key to the generations of guitarist now pondering these great works. So yeah lets talk about and then enjoy the energy of playing in the style of good ole JP.

    Hey i don't know what jimmy did back in the day BUT If ya watch Celebration day 2007 video, first song Good times... his solo, 3 parts, you can see him do the "2" full step bend as ONE full step clearly visible from fret 17.... not 15 - 19. he repeats this with variation in a 3rd part of ending solo... bends from fret 17.... Will Hay -- great listener and idea and bad ass brave for your "opinion" TRUE.

    • @macjohn4
      @macjohn4 Před 4 lety

      Agree, great job by Will here. Watching the Celebration Day video, I see Page do the 2 step bend, but on the B string at the 19th fret. He then finishes that part in box 3 of the E minor pentatonic scale (but ends on the B string at fret 16... this seems like a mistake even though it sounds good. The rehearsal disc seems to have him flubbing a few bits but he ends it on fret 17 of the B string). All very odd choices on where to play these notes but if you think about other solo's he played in this time frame (69ish), the Whole Lotta Love solo utilizes a very similar riff (I'm calling it section 4 of that solo, the part that comes right after the 2nd box one lick). Seeing him perform it live and then looking back a the WLL solo makes me think he's doing it in the same area of the neck (although I haven't fully analyzed any videos of him playing that solo, it's just the way I learned it - OK, just watched WLL solo in Celebration and he's playing that section in Box 2 so I officially give up). Also, keep in mind he's tuned down one full step for this song in Celebration Day to accommmodate Plant's voice being 50 years older than when they recorded it (oddly, WLL seems to be detuned about 10 cents from standard... go figure). All in all, I think Will's original statement that going for the general feel of the solo is probably the best advice (unless you're in a faithful reproduction tribute band). Oh, one more interesting thing Page does, the chunk 7 part he plays in box 5 in Celebration Day... never would have guessed that one. Part of me wonders if he played things the way he did just to say 'screw you internet, you were all wrong.' :)

      I have a good question. Do you think the shorter scale Les Paul Style is easier to bend with than a Tele or Strat? Is it less string tension,or being that the Les Paul is usually strung with .010`s ,and the Fenders .009`s, does it become a neglible difference?

Playing with pull offs makes it way easier too. I don't think Jimmy picks every note at least on the first run

    Great video, thanks! Just a few points--I needed to pay extra careful attention to the picking, especially due to the speed of the licks and my limited technique. In some cases, the picking that you used to introduce a passage does not seem to be the same one you ended up using to play it. If you could demonstrate the picking for each passage, like you did at the beginning of the first chunk, that would be awesome. :)

If you listen to bonafide shredders like Paul Gilbert et al its exactly the kind of runs that they will pick and sits well in so many styles of guitar. Hope this helps, Will

    • @Willhayguitar
      @Willhayguitar  Před 9 lety

      Not sure how I missed this comment. I tend to use heavier gauges than normal (I play 11's in standard mostly) but as you say Page used much lighter strings so if you're after a more authentic tone and feel (not to mention recreating those ridiculous bends he did in this and other solos) lighter might be the way to go.

      Hey Denis, really glad you liked it!
      In answer to your question yeah definitely, you hear these sequenced runs up and down pentatonic boxes loads in rock and blues, Its very popular with lots of bands (Thin Lizzy for another example) so its well worth getting the technique up to speed as it will no doubt help you with lots of other songs as well as you own improvising.
      Its always a good idea to let speed build naturally rather than rushing it too much, and use a metronome so you develop really solid timing. You should still push yourself of course but try not to work outside of the zone of quality where exercises and runs still sound good or this will be counterproductive. Most peoples issues I find is that they are working beyond this zone of quality and it actually takes longer this way to achieve the results you want!
      I hope to release a package on speed building in the next few months so if you fancy it subscribe and Ill let all my youtube followers know when its up!
      Will

    I was extremely disappointed that a half hour video didn't include the outro solo. Big time bummer.

    in addition to the spot-on playing, replete with what sounds like--to the american ear--a gritty British accent apropos for a Zeppelin solo how-to video
