1 An allophone is a variant of a phoneme.
2 example: the /t/ sound in "top" is different from the /t/ sound in "night" .

@@NizarNoury I know this but what I’m confused of is that in minimal pairs if the meaning still the same and there is a difference only in the pronounciation of that phoneme so it’s an allophone example
The case of but
There are two different realizations of this word
/bAt/ and /bA?/ almost like this my keyboard has no sounds of description sorry
Anyways so here these [t ]and [? ]Are allophones of the phoneme /t/ it has different pronounciation but the meaning is the same of the two words so
In some examples of exams there are question like
Are these aspirated and unaspirated sounds phonemes or allophones
And I’m the examples there is no same meaning at all so
Ex:[thaka] to remain"
[taka] 'to stare'
Note: the language is Bengali even it doesn’t matter
So what’s the answer here for me I’m thinking that they’re phonemes bcuz there is no same meaning of words there
