Absolutely yes to using MM for hook sizing! If it’s good enough for my pants, it’s good enough for my flies!

Worked with a guy once who used to always say "the best part about standards is how many of them there are" he was talking about electrical but I think it applies here. lol
Replacing the tooling to make all hooks the same size would cost millions, and likely, these companies couldn't survive off that deficit.
Larger hook gapes are not necessarily better, as you seem to imply, Cheech. What matters is the angle of penetration and how efficient it is. Datus Proper (What the Trout Said) has the goods on this issue.
They are certainly better if you have a bunch of material that closes the gap. Angle of penetration is important... Sure, but if there is too small a gap you won't poke them well at all.
Don't go EWG, but a sixe 18 3x long is the dumbest hook ever made ;}
But what is the area under the hook gap?
So hackle gauges are worthless
