Billy was scheduled to play Jim Morrison in Oliver Stones movie The Doors. He was unable to keep the part due to the horrendous leg injury he received in his motorcycle crash. Val Kilmer ended up with the part
EL Gatto -I was so much enjoying and gettinrg into many of the songs he sings. Is it a variety of artists who write for him or is Billy, the kid? I finally got around to making and eating lovely peanut butter with quality lumps of butter, on pumpkin seed bread. Then I hear Mr Idol, singing a Doors song or rather a JM tune. ALL of A sudden, the sound of music and lyrics went from really fucking good with a surprisingly manny numbers of beats that just suck you right in,(hence taking 40 minutes to make my peanut butter on bread haha), to, wait for it, timeless thought provoking geniuses. Incredible how different that level is but good one Billy, you sure did do it mate.

I'm a huge fan of The Doors, my all time favorite band, but I'm also a huge Billy Idol fan, and I was very happy when this cover was released in 1990. Billy and Jim are two people who embody the word Rockstar.

This is one of the best Doors covers. Billy Idol really makes it his own. Charmed Life is one hell of an album. I bought it in the summer of 1990, on the strength of "Cradle of Love", and loved it.

I always thougt this, (visually) was totally cyberpunk. The burnout and exhaustion mixed with the sets was a major zeitgeist. If I could, I burn myself out in this environment. The video, to me, is a masterpiece.

Don't know about anyone else, but for me this video gives me some "Bladerunner" vibes. It reminds me of that scene in Taffy Lewis's nightclub. The one where he tracked down Zora right before he shot, er, i mean "retired" her. Something about the lighting and the set design and the bar patrons and all that, it looks like it was straight up lifted out of that movie. Even some of the scenes in the beginning before Billy goes out and just wakes up. The place he was living in reminds me of the type of place someone like Deckard or Sebastian would live in. Even the shot of him riding down the elevator and it showed the elevator from the outside of the building....it reminds me of the version of LA from that movie. Anyone else get that feeling?

That is why he entitled the album, "Charmed Life." The doctors who had to put his arms and legs together through reconstructive surgery said he had literally cheated death. He was originally supposed to have a prominent role in the video but could only appear with a cane due to extensive injuries sustained in the motorcycle crash/wreck. My source: my memory of Kurt Loder's reporting on it on an MTV special at the time.
