This week I wanted to see exactly how fast I can build a house to use in my D&D game; start to finish, built, painted, and ready for the table. And I think it turned out to be a failure.

For stucco, I often use tile grout mixed 50/50 with regular plaster which gives a slightly grainy finish that can be made to look like it is cracking off around the places where I have textured the walls on the foam-core to look like willow or wattle and daub under the stucco on the upper floors or older buildings and brick work under the stucco on lower floors or somewhat more modern buildings.

Thank you, that's a good tip! I'll definitely have to try that out, I like the idea of cracking up in places a lot

Don't get down on yourself. That was still a pretty fast build. It was enlightening to see a great crafter like you also struggle with the same things we all struggle with. The best thing is you have addressed the areas where you know you want to do better, and we can all benefit from learning how to speed build in stages! Keepp it up I look forward to fridays mornings( I know your videos come out thursday but I see them friday)

Thank you, your continued support really means a lot! I think this was a good exercise for sure, I think I learned a lot! It's important to keep challenging yourself, and even a build you're not super happy with is still an addition to a growing collection

I think there's a ton of different options that will look good, and add some variety to your builds. Give it a shot and let me know how it turns out!

If you want to build fast, you have to plan out exactly how you're going to do it and think of what you can do to speed up various steps. For example, spending the first 30 minutes to do up a plan so you can do all your cutting at once. Or, rather than slow-drying spackle for your stucco, you can mix tile grout into your mod-podge mix on those sections.
Also, think multiple and smaller--you can do a whole bunch of really similar houses all based on one template and then add details to differentiate them (add some dormers to a couple roofs, do some as timber frame and stucco and some as clapboards, change up window and door locations, etc.). That way, although you'll spend a longer total time, you spend less time on each individual piece and get a whole bunch done basically all at once.

Awesome, those are some super good tips! I think I learned a ton from this process and am constantly looking to improve the processes

Very interesting. Yes, a smaller cottage would be quicker

You might be right about that! I definitely learned a lot from this exercise

I love the look! I’m curious, what size are the little stone wall pieces in the final glamour shot? I’m so happy I found your channel. I’m running a Lost Mines Phandelver/Dragon of Ice Spire Peak combo, and this will help a lot!

I'm glad you found it, and I hope you're enjoying the content! Those little stone pieces are roughly 2.5 inches long and about half an inch high, they make great little additions to scenes! Good luck with running the game, and let me know how it works out!

Personally I could never understand the reasons for speed building, in fact I'm still at the stage of watching CZcams channels on how to build things and that's my planning

Henrik Sonne-Schmidt I think the main reason people speed build is for when they need a lot of things quickly. Also, some people probably just enjoy it.

Corey Mease I think also it’s a good exercise for creativity and skills being pushed

I think one of the biggest barrier to building terrain is the overwhelming idea that you have so much to make. Something like this can be a quick way to throw together a few buildings so you have a starting point to work from.

Why, after you messure, draw a line, take the ruler away, to line it back up on the line to cut? Line up once and cut. Speed increase.

Still a speed build. Slow is a speed ;)

Are the stone walls just XPS foam carved to shape?
Are they weighted in any way?

    • @StorycraftSociety
      @StorycraftSociety  Před 4 lety

The stone walls I used in the set dressing were actually 3D printed for me by a friend and then I painted them up. You certainly could make them out of XPS and carve them to look like this, but coming up with a way to give them some weight would be an issue you'd need to address for sure!

Peel off the paper and texture with foil ball, try again
