Three clever seals hitch a ride on the bow of a huge ship

- The seals can be seen relaxing on The Gelbray Express, a large livestock ship, during a trip through Portland Bay off the coast of Victoria. As the ship is sailing through the ocean, the seals play with each other and walk across the bow. Seals tend to hop on boats and ships because they associate them with food or they are avoiding predators.

The seals are adapting and taking advantage of the modern conveniences passing through their habitat. That's smart!
Looks like they were happy to stay there until the camera man arrived.
one of them had a starbux!!!
If you think that's impressive, you should check out the birds that have adapted to taking public transit.
@@00canuck51 wheres the video
@@nickwiddicombe1701 There's a whole subreddit dedicated to it actually lol. It's called "Birds Taking Trains" or something like that. Plus if you just search 'Birds taking the train/bus" you'll find hundreds of videos.

It’s an express ship. Should go back the other way. However, they didn’t trust it, so they bailed.
they prolly did not make it back. they prolly got ate up

Lmfao nice
Mate it we all had to, it's not a big deal.
Yup and uphill both ways.
I just hope they can dodge the propellers when they're done sun bathing and have to get in the water again.
U think they cant?
As long as they realize that they need to swim away from the ship in the direction they jumped off, they should have plenty of time, even if the ship turns the wrong way after they jump. I wouldn't recommend that humans do this, since humans are less well adapted to swimming.
Thats actually how hot dogs are made.

Don't laugh. Thats their equivalent of train surfing...
I have lived by big ships my whole life and I've never once seen sea lion chopped up by a propeller. Seals are actually very smart and they can swim fast. I wouldn't be surprised if they jump on well it was moving just to take a break...
Was worried about that !
I would think that part of the boat is not out of the water unless the boat is moving. Im almost positive they jumped on while it was already in motion. Those puppies are super fast swimmers.

Interesting as I assumed the main concern would be Great Whites
@@shinlanten you are really right; including the great white shark🦈. It's just that killer whales are more versatile and quick-witted🐬 and they can't stand the presence of a great white shark nearby.

At that rate of knots the bulb would take some skill to get on to. That shows an ability to spot advantages and to think ahead. Gets my seal of approval.
They were on it before it started moving and they were too stupid to think they had to swim all the way back untill they were miles out
@@lachlanoneil8938 they swim further than that to hunt, and they are close to shore....likely moving moorings or about to leave harbor...they are at harbor speeds, not offshore speeds...and the ABs standing at the mooring bits waiting to tie back up is a dead clue
They are sea lions and more than capable of out swimming that ship!!
“The taxi service here is terrific!”
That ship is accelerating. Those seals are in real danger of escaping. The propellor is not only pushing that ship forward, it is sucking the water back. You have to swin away from the ship in a real hurry. That propeller is moving tons ov water per second. A human would not survive unless he dove real deep quickly. That is a cute video.
I hope that they know that there's a huge propeller at the other end of the ship, the cheeky little buggers.
By the time they know it, they wouldn't know it anymore.
Probably one in the middle too
Probably dove down like they do they were probably fine
propeller is kuch deeper I think
Nope seal are fast and smart, i live in a beach that have lot of oil factory and have lot of big tanker and we never seen a seal that get chopped of by any ships propeller,,,,,

Seals are like :" What ya going to do now Orca's?"
With the intelligence level of Orcas, it wouldn't surprise me if the idea of jumping over the bow knocking the seals into the water will come to the Orcas mind.
On the basis that the bow doesn't get much bigger bellow the surface.
"If we can't beat it, we're gonna ride it!"
In the bad weather ship bow goes under water
Sounds like a dating strategy

MV Gelbray Express is the third livestock carrier built by Cosco Guangdong Shipyard, based in China, for its Netherlands customer Vroon Offshore Services, who placed a contract in 2011 to build six livestock vessels at an estimated cost of $28.25m each. The first two vessels, Galloway Express and Ganado Express, were launched in April 2013 and May 2013 respectively.

That is the bulbous bow, designed to decrease drag. All three seals hopped off...maybe they got to where they were hitching to!
You're right! None of those seals was in drag!
It's amazing that these animals are not afraid or intimidated by the sheer enormity of the vessel
It's simple conditioning. Ships pass through all the time and never attempt to prey upon the seals, so their curiosity brings them to check them out.
Seals: We will travel, across the land and sea... To explore the wonders that the world wants to show us.
Pretty clever ..why bother to swim when i can hitch a ride....lol

For those interested in aircraft wings what is being beautifully projected and seen is the upside-down version of the wing of an aircraft. Note how the blunt leading edge is producing a high-pressure zone and the bow wave which causes the momentum of the water to, later on, cause suction behind the lower sunk blunt leading edge and this suction goes back till the back wave is sicked up again. Note the profile of the upper surface of a wing can be easily deduced from what is being seen in this video.
Now what the seals had to worry about when they dropped back into the water was the last part of the ship where the hull tapers up to meet the propeller, THis is a suction zone as the water is filling in the trough that the main hull leaves behind and so the seal would have to swim hard not to be sucked into the propeller. Still, with a ship like that the propeller would not turn faster than 150 rpm, and if the seals are sucked by the propeller, I would not be surprised that with their agility than gan go in between the blades all depending on the number of blades in the prop.
The whole hull of a ship can be regarded as two wings side by side and if two longships come to close they will be sucked as in between Bernoulli and Naver Stoke equations indicate that there is low pressure between the two ships. The boat taking this video did well to stay away and a pilot boat needs a lot of power to get away from the side/ under suction of a ship and the captain needs to be careful as when going fast in deep waters it is one thing but going fast in shallow waters the low pressure under the hull will cause the hull to hit the ground. The pressure zones around the hulls of ships and aircraft are very interesting and this video is very educational to those who can see beyond what the human sensors can see. THAT IS THE ENGINEERING PARTand the most beautiful ARTISTIC PART. humans and seals can behold.
Yeah, they were relaxing just fine until some idiot with a speedboat came too close, then they jumped back into the water...
hahahahahahaaha
Hopefully not through the propellers
@stimmo77 LOL. He used a ZOOM lens. Doubt if he was THAT CLOSE! SMH
@@gayleh3688 At 24 seconds in you can see the wake of the boat in the corner. He was quite close.

I wondered what type of ship it is - turns out it is a “livestock carrier”
Everybody is talking about the seals but I find the shape of the bow more interesting. Hybrid between an Ulstein X-Bow and a conventional bulbous bow, it's probably faster than a pure X-Bow while being able to handle the same rough seas.

Seals are extremely powerful swimmers, that can swim up to 20mph, and dive at lightning speed, so will be safely away from the ships propellers, and out of harm's way the instance they dived back in. They are like torpedo's in water

Ran away when captain asked for ticket.😂
Now, safely blended into the sea by the garage sized propellers they would of been sucked into
@Coon Dog I’m afraid even an orca going through a 40 thousand horse power engine would of not even caused a drop in rpm on the engines. Those seals are now in jigsaw mode, at the bottom of the sea
I had the same thought. No way they could swim out of the props at that speed. 😔
@@damiktamai7007 exactly, the suction from under the boat would be intense, couple with speed would be a bad outcome.
