this animation is even better if you understand cirque, as the animators so obviously did. Firstly, the special bond that creating a synchronized piece requires is akin to telepathy. You must be so close to your partner that you can read their mind as if it were your own.
Secondly, the drop at the end of the piece is a real one that I have completed before. The person doing the drop gets most of the spotlight in the move, but the real credit goes to the base on top. The force exerted on the silk makes the top girl's position unimaginably painful, symbolizing the trials she goes through in the relationship. The animation is beautiful at face value, but a greater understanding of cirque revealed how deep the symbolism goes.
What's that technique called?
That explains a lot
Thank you so much for this explanation! I honestly love it so much more now!!
is that how telepathy works
wow
The one who acts uncaring, rude, or sarcastic is always the one most hurt by the other's decision.
Blue Crow
Except that in this short it’s the one that acts uncaring, rude and sarcastic that is leaving the duo not the other one.
not always
@@m0m055 its a breakup.
Casper the not so friendly ghost how do you know
Here it shows her guilt
I love how French animation often has this tension... it's mesmerizing.
And the music... just embezzling
Yep they make beautiful quality animations I agree and wondering why we dont see movies coming from there
Thanks bro.
@@ebrastudios3050 shrek and Despicable Me for the most notorious movies have been realised by french artists if i remember well
Yeah
I love the symbolism of the dance juxtaposed with their dialogue. Start out together, climb up to success, help each other, then Not-Claire (don't know her name) climbs up further and becomes successful enough to launch her own solo career, but she won't succeed unless Claire lets her go while still having her back. The ending shows them at their beginning, equals connected by the same thread who will eventually unravel and become two separate strings due to their ultimately different goals, which are shown by what each of them is looking at-Claire at her partner (a more personal love for their art), and her partner at the audience (a more professional love for it). Absolutely lovely. And the emotional tension is not only real but wonderfully accompanied by the colour palettes at every turn. Brilliant!!
The other ones name is Marla (I think)
oh that's good. i didnt notice that omg
Oh spirit of melons you're good!
Now that you mention this, I can also see the parallel in their dialogue too. Like when she says “let’s go” and one lets go of the other’s hand during their dance.
@@Light-oz5pv She's not literally saying the words "let's go", that's just an approximate translation. She's saying "en piste". The double meaning of the English phrase "let's go" doesn't transfer.
I like how despite the tension they both seem to still trust and care for each other. Not letting their partner drop to her death and the facial expressions they give to the other leaves me with that profound impression.
*everyone agrees*
They look similar - I think they may be siblings
I’m 100% sure she could get fired for that.
@@kazarofchult8086 they look similar because they are both gymnasts (same body type and must have their hair lile that when dancing)
@@kazarofchult8086 I think that’s a style thing since they have different facial features, it’d probably be stated if they were related! So I doubt it
Who else is trying to find the really long comment that explains this short animation?
me
I think i'm too stupid and don't understand 😂

lol there you go
Pure Flamboyance what is the drop called?
_I love the style and the lighting of this animation_
DO?! UNDERTALE?! WHY WERE YOU HERE?!
same
Same
I see you everywhere, sometimes I agree with you, sometimes I really don’t, but this time I definitely do😂.
I see you everywhere!
My analysis: the two are in a relationship or breaking off their relationship. The ribbon dance represents their journey as a couple. In the first scene of the ribbon, there’s a huge red line that divides them. This foreshadows that they aren’t happily in love and are simply just living in the ‘gaps’ between them. In the next scenes, the dancers climb and this represents them developing individually rather than together. In the last scene with the top lady balancing the other lady; this shows the climax of their relationship. One is fully committed and wants to keep up the relationship, but the other loses hope. Eventually their bond breaks and one of them ‘loses’. In the last scene, the lady drops the other one and suddenly she is left hanging. This part shows how even though one of them is not feeling the love, she still cares for her. I’ve seen in a comment: about how in the last scene both woman have an important role in that dance. The one on the top is holding everything together, but the other is ultimately risking her life. This symbolises how the relationship wasn’t so one sided. There was a certain amount of co-dependency.
P.s at the start: when the lady comes in dress up; she’s singing ‘dream a little dream of me’ a song about not having the words to say ‘I Love You” this just highlights the fact that they were both in a shadow of doubt and ignorance and that their experience is something that strikes a deeper part of you.
oh i love this!
@@yellowbubble8465 thank you 🙏
That explains the ending. I could have sworn she was about to say "I love you" but couldn't bring herself to 😞
@@WobblesandBean it just takes those three words “I Love You” to really shift the relationship between two people
I always thought they were sisters
Excellent story and animation. I especially like how you designed the girls muscular and curvy, rather than just the typical stick-figures we see all the time.
googamp32 yes!! it’s so refreshing to see broad-shouldered, muscular girls! they’re acrobats after all-it really bugs me when animations/shows design super skinny girls as athletes.
plus I like how you designed the hairstyle it makes it look curvey, poofy, and sexy.
googamp32 yeah! It's more realistic that if they are training in silks they would be muscular
@@aquadust Um... I'm basically a twig and I'm an athlete
Sonia Avellenda there’s nothing wrong with that too! love your body :D i meant that it becomes a problem when shows consistently have no body diversity. i’m really sorry if i sounded like i was putting down skinny girls, that’s not what i intended to say >_
I love everything about this, the color, the body structure, the emotion between the two. I feel the red rope represents life and death, and the two both have the option to end the other life, but at the end choose not too
Dunno why, but I'm getting the Samurai Jack vibes from this.
Amazing animation! Love it!
Lack of outlines and simple shapes to make the characters
For me it's more of a Bauhaus Triadic Balett
It’s probably the red
The faces reminded me of sym bionic titan
Same!!
Fantastic. Simple, but with a lot of depth. Even though they had tension before the show, they still had to trust each other during the act or else one would have died.
I love the background of their dressing room. The clutter of Claire’s side and the stark organization of the other side. The way one of the few things posted there is a clock and a photo of just one dancer. Meanwhile Claire’s side proudly displays photos of both of them not dancing as well as outside of performance. The way Claire’s stuff rolls over to the other side and the other character brushes it away and then grabs it in frustration when it doesn’t stay on the others side. Absolutely wonderful.
Literal and figurative tension. I love this
Bravo!
The character designs and the story were integrated so well. The body shapes and the expressions are simplified but not so much that you couldn't empathize with them.
The music sped up and slowed down at key moments to deliver the most drama. The pauses created tension. The upbeat parts supplemented the action.
Well look at this guy here.. you know so much wow you're knowledge is amazing wow i am amazed wow such technical information wow you must be expert i bow down to you oh amazing master of everything
TheXeeman You're raggin' on this guy, forrrrr... saying he likes the animation?
TheXeeman
Uh, feeling a little bitter, buddy? A little outdone?
All heat, all anger with your loved one goes away when you both do something you love.
i thought it was about how on stage things might appear perfect, but behind the scenes it's a different story.
John Ray I think it can mean both. The thing about art is that everyone interprets it differently. Its cool to see the meanings you two saw in this and what meaning stood out the most for each person. I like how this animation leaves more room for this open interpretation rather than having an obvious answer.
I love how it didn't waste the time of the performance after the actual prep. The performance told a lot about their relationship, so it was great to see both how they conflict and how they work together at the same time instead of seeing one after the other. It gives you better understanding.
The last three shots show a line between or coming between them, visually telling you that they're splitting up
This is great. Relationships between collaborating preformers/artists can be very strenuous, complicated and intimate. Especially when the things you preform require full commitment and trust in one another to pull off.
Art is a very personal thing, especially when you are making art with someone else. Because of this, the person you are collaborating with deeply influences the performance that is also yours. And it's extremely frustrating and can destroy friendships.
But, before anything else, whatever conflicts you have behind the scenes as artists, the performance comes first. As soon as you are performing, you NEED to put everything aside and trust each other fully and carry each other.
Wonderful detail I noticed on my second time watching it 1:17 one grips tighter than the other
Beautiful lighting. You could just feel their tension... The character designs are simple but powerful.
I'm OBSESSED with that tension.
Magnificent, simply superb. I love Gobelins animations, but this one is one of my favorites. I love the colors, animation and sound. The music also adds, in helping one visualize the tension and heat between them. and I love the language, its simply beautiful.
The fact that Claire is the one supporting & holding onto the other girl while she’s trying to let go is saying a lot
Absolutely beautiful. Such depth of character with such minimalistic dialogue!
I hope all the artists involved in this production are living amazing lives now, 7 years later, and that they’ve kept creating amazing pieces of visual storytelling
1:34 SHES HUMMING DREAM A LITTLE DREAM OF ME BY MOMMA CASS!!
What I’m getting from the film is a relationship that is toxic and that they have to put on a show and not talk about the issues in their relationship. They are a duo and when the first woman was falling she was barely saved, I think that meant in some way that Claire betrayed her and almost let her go but the ties caught her keeping her in the relationship and having to do it over and over again until one day the ties don’t catch her
I'm too asexual to understand this lmaooo
@@cherryspice1011 toxic relationships don’t have to be sexual or romantic, they can be platonic too so it still works either way :O

That is all it means.
The use of warm and cool colors in contrast is so aesthetically pleasing
The sense of tension throughout was fantastic! And such vibrant colour. BRAVO!
I could watch this a million times
I love how on one side of the room was clean and tidy while the other side was unorganized and messy
Une amitié qui ne tiens qu'a un fil, c'est beau.
This made SUCH an impact, I love it!
Very good work, the style itself seems very reminiscent of Genndy Tartakovsky
It hurts way more to loose a friend than a lover. Amazing job, loved it!❤🌇
Amazing use of colour and symbolism (with the red "thread") aswell as good animation and storytelling!
OMG!! The visuals where stunning with the attention to detail. The color selection made the script flow while keeping viewers astonished. Great job Gobelins.
This is gorgeous. My personal favorite out of the bunch.
Every animation i watch from this channel is my favourite
Thank you for each of your great work. I'm so grateful that I can see such beautiful and amazing animation in my life.
Loved that smile part at the end. That was animated so well!
The art style is reminiscent of samurai Jack. Is it just me?
Not just you, it looks like Samurai Jack with more fluid animation.
Si seulement toutes les VF étaient aussi spontanées, aussi pures!
Splendide
C'est parce que c'est la VO..
I like how they both seem to be slightly off their game, Claire forgets to smile at the audience at first and her partner's one hair keeps coming loose
The only words that came out of my mouth and when the animation was over was
Gorgeous.
It is amazing how two polar opposites can work so well together.
Best one of the new shorts in my opinion.
I really love this animation and everything about it! The visuals and underlying story are great and interesting, composition and colors are great along with character design and music, and the way the story is unveiled is really creative and engaging! A great job was done, putting this beautiful masterpeice together!
Tout simplement sublime.
Magnifique! image, musique et démonstration.
Poetic, perfection
I'm obsessed with this colours
I love the works of Gobelins so much
The animation is so smooth!!!
I saw this, and waited to watch it. I am sorry for that. Thank you for this, I am grateful for it
Je suis fier d'être né dans un pays qui offre de si belles animations.

*But I'll still be here to make sure you don't hit the ground...*
with the separation of the duo I had a kind of 'break up' vibe, even if that isn't the case, gosh french animation always feels intense or dramatic no matter what they do, I love it!
J'adooore les courts-métrages de cette école !
When the red ribbons drop between them, it feels like it was drawing a line; a divide. Their tensions certainly seems to allude to it.
I love so much this animation
My favorite so far~! :D
This is a masterpiece, and should be more appreciated :D
beautiful, smooth, aesthetically pleasing animation
I love the intensity of this wow
non mais ca ne va pas? j’adore! cette video est underrated

the tension is soooooo.......amazing.. and the art....my god i want to learn french just to learn at gobelins
Masterpiece.
As a person who used to be in silks, this is amazing
wow my heart stopped
The tension is unreal... and the show in blue and red is breathtaking.
Great animation! Loved the color script on this one! Simple but very good choices! Great work! ^_^
Simple is often far more challenging than complex.
Didn't take me too long to figure out what they were going for with this one, and it was brilliant. I admit it got me pretty tensed up.
The sound design really aids in the creation of suspense, it really captures the audience.
How could anyone dislike this!?
Beautiful!!
There films are always beautiful :3 well done
You guys should make movies, they’d be awesome!
Wow, amazing!
C'est bon! J'aime beaucoup!
