- In the early 1970's a friend and myself thought we would go and visit WPIX TV channel 11 in NY. We snuck in and started looking around. The guard must have left his post for a minuet or two. We made our way to the heart of the studio. We saw a glass wall with 16mm movie projectors behind them, wow ,Star Trek was being played and was being broadcast. It looked all automated, no one was around. A little while later I saw a familiar figure down the other end of the hall, I waived and he waived back, it was Captain Jack McCarthy. He asked us how we got into the building and we said we just walked right in, I think we caught him by surprise. Instead of throwing us out he was very nice to us and showed us around. We then went into his office where I saw his Captains coat on a hanger and he signed postcards for us. The postcard and autograph are in this video. He was a very very nice man! I remember his kindness to this very day! I bet they tightened up security after our visit. Thanks Captain Jack McCarthy ! ! What a guy !

People look at me puzzled when I say that I grew up in the Bronx during the 60s-early 70s and enjoyed my childhood. My parents didn't let me run the streets and we had good quality tv shows with people like Officer Joe and Capt Jack as role models for us kids. WPIX was our main channel.
YEP, Capt Jack, was on for years, kids born in the 1950's watched him all the way into the late 1960's ,and every St.patty's day he hosted for years. I think i watched his last St Patricks day Parade, his retirement from hosting the Parade, he had his family with him, marching in the parade. They dont make them like that anymore, We kids respected him and his uniform, just like Officer Joe Bolton. And Thank you , Capt Jack.. He's in heaven, the part over Ireland im sure.
Captain Jack, pray for us!
I'd love to see some shows from the day, but just hearing that voice again is a treat!
Good ole Capt Jack! i looked forward to him doing the St. Patty's day parade every year, and at the end , he would always say.." May you be in heaven one hour before the devil knows your dead" then put his microphone down and proudly join in the parade...
I remember one St. Patrick's Day a group of policemen paraded by where Jack was doing the Broadcast and started yelling..........Jack! Jack! Jack!. And The Captain got teary over the salute by New York's finest. Happy Saint Patrick's day Captain where ever you are.
"Six bells, and aaaaaaaaaaaal is well." Met him while watching a Giants football game in the 80's. Couldn't resist bothering the man, calling him Mr. McCarthy at first, and thanking him for all the wonderful memories. A bunch of people heard me and gave him an ovation. Choked me up.
I remember him as the host of Channel 11 coverage of every St. Patrick’s day parade.
Met him when I was a small boy...he was a friend of my father who was VP of NYC pressmans union.
"Ahoy There Matey, Let's Ring That Bell"
Ahoy there Slip! I always enjoyed watching you and the boys Sunday mornings on Ch. 5.
Jack McCarthy and Joe Bolton were the ARMORS of Channel 11, and a memorable part of my childhood. (Uh-uh, don't figure out my age, LOLOLOLOLOL).
Don't forget Sonny Fox, Sandy Becker, Chuck McHahn and my all time favorite SOUPY SALES!
this legendary cat had a great show !
You kept me on the straight and narrow, thanks Capt. Jack !!
I loved this show
God Bless Capt. Jack McCarthy. May he RIP
I watched Captain Jack every single day and remember his messages of camaraderie and good sportsmanship. Where can kids get influences like Capt. Jack and Officer Joe Bolton today? This video made me well up. Thanks pal.
I sat on his lap 57 years ago, at the St. Clement Pope's church bazaar in South Ozone Park, NY.
That's great!
I expected that his handwriting would be elegant, and it it turns out even more elegant than I expected.
I knew Captain Jack. I went to school with one of his son's at I.H.M. Catholic grammar school in Scarsdale, New York in the 1960's ( his son wasn't in my class, he was younger). I remember going trick or treating at his house. The picture in this video shows him as the color of orange which he was in real life. We asked him about that and he said it had something to do with the TV cameras, the lighting and the makeup he had to wear. He was orange way before Trump was. I remember Captain Jack McCarthy as being a very nice man.
Brings back memories
good old day on wpix-tv nyc.
That brought back good memories, Even recall when he hosted the St Patrick's Day Parade
Sometime in the late 60's me my bother and mom was on the show. It was a great and memorable time in my life. I wish I could see the episode.
Excellent find, thanks! I grew up in 1960s-70s NYC and Captain Jack was one of the happiest parts of an otherwise very weird childhood. I'm delighted you uploaded this...he was one in a million.
+Glenn Horowitz Jack, Joe Bolton, Sandy Becker, Sonny Fox, all the children's hosts were all I had as a kid, few friends to speak of. The few good memories were mostly of TV daydreams.
Great memories! Thanks for posting.
”Six bells, Three O’Clock!”
Can't forget Officer Joe Bolton either.
ah the memories.
God bless you Capt. Jack!!!
used to watch!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOVE it
Captain Jack is the missing piece at the St. Patrick's Day parade. Not the same any more.
@TheStanbabe I think my wording my have mislead you into thinking i said we watched Capt. Jack from the 1950,S into the late 60's. if you check it , kids born in the 1950's , watched him into the late 1960's . I can remember as far back as watching probably the last year of Super Circus , 1956 , with Claude Kirchner . Crusader Rabbit, Ruff and Reddy, Spunky and Tadpole, Colonel Bleep . Sorry for my confusing wording.
1952kid Perhaps if you spent more time with a grammar book, than watching Popeye and committing a felony, this post might be intelligible.
Great story...if that was today they would've called in the SWAT team to take you guys out.
8 bells and all's well! Not really. I grew up in Jersey and when I was 18 I went Christmas shopping in a local department store. As I walked into the front door I saw Capt'n Jack standing there near the entrance (guess he might have been waiting on his wife ). He must have seen the surprised look on my face and immediately turned his back to me. That action on his part was so devastating I have never been able to sit through a Popeye cartoon since.
Oh No!
@@PARKWOODECHO I know, horrible just horrible. So I just kept walking and did my shopping.
In 1969 I was on the first Fun and Games Show. Joe Bolton and McCarthy hosted it. During a break I walked over to Bolton and McCarthy were sitting off set. I asked McCarthy for an autograph. He looked at me and said "I'm on a break. Go away". I went to Bolton and asked him. He took me a few doors from the studio. His office, right across from the control room. He signed a picture post card for me. I never watched McCarthy after that. In 1973 I was back in Bolton's office for an interview for an English class project.
Aye, Aye Mateys! 4 Bells it's 6 o'clock!!!
❤️
It just wasn't St. Patrick's Day without Jack McCarthy (and I'm not even Irish!)
+V. Fonebone Same here. He always hosted the parade

Do you remember when Captain had the aging BUD ABBOTT on his show (it may have been officer joe bolton, but I dont think so)? Am looking for that and no one has it. Rumors were that Bud Abbott was impoverished then...

I'm trying to find the episode on captain jack when he had the rubella umbrella contest, I was one of the winners, can someone help me find that episode
What was the name of the piece of music used as the theme song?
Not sure of the title.
His brogue got thicker and thicker as the day wore on-- I wondered if he really spoke that way and the "American" accent on children's TV was a put-on, or whether the brogue was the effect of a wee dram o' the Bushmill's on a chilly March morning. Or, maybe, he just got caught up in the whole "Irishness" of the situation.
Hut to peen and smooth sailing!
up too pee ! ( the capt'n would always say this, I donno why )
Where’s the “7 bells and all’s well. Hut to peen, and smooth sailing!! Captain Jack McCarthy here…” opening?? And as a result, thumbs down👎.
