  • The aerial railway at Wuppertal was opened on March 1, 1901 and has a length of 13.3 km. One trip from on terminus to the other takes about 30 minutes; the train stops at 20 stations.
Technically it is a hanging monorail. The "Schwebebahn" follows the river "Wupper" for about 12 km; in the southern part at Vohwinkel it follows a road. The aerial railroad operates at an altitute of about 12 meters above the surface.
Each of the originally 28 cars (class GTW 72) has a top speed of 60 km/h, is 24.06 meters long and weighs about 22.1 tons. The trains had been delivered by MAN between 1972 and 1975 and are about to be replaced by 2014.
The historic train at the end of the video is the "Kaiserwagen", built in 1900. This unit is being used for special trips only.

Thanks. I didn't know of the existence of it.
It was built early for its technology.
It provides a great view and makes use of the otherwise unused area above the river.
    What a find.

Very innovative, ahead of it's time. I love the way it straddles streets and rivers.

It is sooo quiet than any other types of transport...just incredible considering that it is moving by iron wheel on iron rail.

I like this idea much better than running on the surface. Our streetcar system is always dealing with unpredictable drivers and trucks parked too close to, or even on, the tracks.

Important for foreign visitors: Often the train does not function during school holidays for inspection and repair reasons

Looking at how incredibly robust (and expensive) the infrastucture is, you can perhaps see why the Monorail never really took off as the transport system of the future, can't you ..

Where I lived (Philadelphia), trolleys used to own the streets. Thanks to carelessness by previous transit companies (especially by PTC), SEPTA upgraded only five of the dozens of streetcar routes (the Subway Surface lines) and left three other routes with WWII cars continuing to rot until 1992. Today the SS line cars are still going, and one of the street routes is back in full service,
City trolley service is more efficient, but not if the transit company is wasteful.

Most unusual. I've never seen a suspended train using wheels, only maglev. A great idea. We have some elevated trains in NY, but they ride on tracks and are about 100 years old: ugly and noisy.

Expensive? I guess if they tore it down every twenty or thirty years for something "newer and better" it would be quite costly. It is like distroying the trolly car infrastructer only to run busses on the same route, only to fd 50 years later that trolly cars would be more efficient if only it didn't cost so much now to replace the tracks you tore up.
