- Nobody would go to jail for refusing to comply with National Service under a Conservative government, the Home Secretary has said.
In the Conservatives' first policy announcement of the general election campaign, Rishi Sunak said he would introduce a new form of mandatory National Service for 18-year-olds if his party wins the vote in July.
Talking to Sky News's Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, James Cleverly said: "There's going to be no criminal sanctions, nobody's going to jail over this." He added that "nobody will be compelled to do the military element" but said those who do will be paid - while those who choose to volunteer will not be paid.

The wonderful world of human rights is a very last resort. And whoever allowed the word life to be posted on the central Bradford skyline really should have some explaining to do. Its understandable to a degree why some would want shut of this area. EC however, is a rebuild. Slowly but surely.

The army didn't want National Service after the war. It was a pointless burden on them. Employers would not want to lose staff and the people themselves would be joining the army now if they wanted to do it. Who does want this? Old right wing colonels and codgers maybe?
Old people who had to do this themselves in their day, and think today's young need to be disciplined, something like that. I'm sure they'd have done some surveys and thought this would be useful in some swing seats. They have never tried to win the young vote and now they have all but given up on the parents of young people too. They have also screwed up people's pension plans and the care for the elderly. So how can they keep the elderly vote without making their lives better, performative cruelty on the young, of course.

My youngest is 18, about to sit her A-level exams with conditional offers from universities.
Rishi Sunak now is saying he doesn’t want my daughter in university, and would rather she went into the army.
When this goes into effect, she'd be 19 with any luck, but yeah parents should vote according to how they feel as youngsters who will be affected do not have the vote now.

It's insane. As a French citizen, I completed my national service in 1996. I was in one of the last contingents as it was abrogated in 1998. (1) Those with connections either did not do it or landed in cushy jobs. (2) Graduates were treated as cheap, educated labour by professional NCOs, most of whom did not even have the baccalaureate (3) Those graduates who extended their national service by 3 months for officer training were considered as worse than privates by professional NCOs. (4) That one year (it was 12 months at the time) delayed entry into the world of work. (5) who would want to serve for an institution that serves greedy politicians who wage illegal wars? There is no such thing as society anyway, who knows best than the Tories!
Cleverly deliberately did not mention no one will go to jail because the jails are full.
