There are probably quite a few people on here thinking that your 'failed' shots were actually very good! Nature isn't balanced and photographs are more than just calculations. It can sometimes be something that one person see's. You have a natural eye for photography which you have shown countless times before. As one of the most respected landscape photographers out there, you should give yourself a break, perfection is in the eye of the beholder! Great vid Thom.
Came here to say this, in a roundabout way.
"You can see here from these unprocessed raw files, they at first glance look great... but the composition and the balance, its all off."
...I'll trust his eye, because it looks great to me. I'd stare at and enjoy that image as much as the others in the video. Maybe there's a degree of trying to please other photographers rather than just the general public. Maybe if I stare at it for an hour, I won't like it because I'll finally see this imbalance a keen photographer will see/feel amost naturally? I still enjoy it, regardless. :)
Fully agree. I love Thomas’s and many other channels and have learned a lot from them. In a lot of ways I’m glad I’m just an enthusiast rather than a pro as I get a great deal of enjoyment taking photos not even half as good as the ones the pro’s are disappointed with! Probably not the attitude to have as I’m unlikely to improve much but it works for me.
@@Ian_N05 Ian, I think that’s exactly the right attitude. We take photos to be happy, and seeking perfection rarely leads to happiness. 👍
I agree with you there! There seems to be a lot of pressure in the landscape photography world to create balance in compositions, which obviously does work very very nicely. But, I dunno, like you said nature isn't balanced the way we see it through a viewfinder and I think that can be used to effect... probably easier said than done and maybe one day I'll put my money where my mouth is... or perhaps I just take too many unbalanced shots lol!
Nevertheless, awesome video from Thomas and spectacular photography as always.
Thomas do you have wife od kids?
15:38 "It's just good for soul." Those words resonate so much.
In this day and age of social media where content creators curate their lives and only show their "best moments", it's great to see you still include in your videos your 'failed' shots.
I’d call this a ‘classic’ Thomas Heaton video. It’s got all the elements that make your videos great, and I love to see you camping. It’s back to basics, and done very well. You say it’s good for the soul to go camping, and it really shows in your video. Big thumbs up.
Every time something like that happens, it reminds me of the “not everything that is beautiful makes a beautiful photo”… as a way of relaxing myself and just taking a photo to enjoy the moment, instead of focusing too much in the outcome of the photo.
Sometimes the images just don't work but the experience is what is key.
You know what? Waking up to that spectacular view photograph or not would just make my day and even week!
My favourite Tom Heaton content. Camping in the mountains. Loved the balance in the pano due to the light hitting the hill on the left and the gap in the clouds on the right.
Whenever you stand there explaining what you are about to take I'm like "take the shot man, it's slipping away!!"
Anyways, thank you for the content. I'm from Ukraine and at this time going out with my camera is not a safe and easy thing to do, so I fulfill my photography curiosity by watching videos like yours
Take care buddy
Maybe he first takes the image (to be sure) then explains and takes a second posed image
I'll let you in to a secret. I often grab the shot first, to make sure I have it, then I will film my piece and shoot it again 🙂 Best of luck, man. I hope things get better soon 👍
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto OK, I can sleep now 😄
stay safe please
...
Tom being Tom, camping, humour, banter and most of all great images, even the ones that so called failed. I could watch this format for days on end. Thanks Tom 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Nice to see a classic Thomas Heaton video of some classic landscape photography. They were all beautiful shots. That camp site looked stunning. Much prefer this film to 10 minutes of watching a dart fall out the wall.
Geez, you can’t have everything. Two stunning images in one day would do quite well for me. Everything in this chapter is terrific.
As a former truck driver traveling all over the US, especially the west, I often struggled like you. Beautiful light but no usable composition. The thing I learned is that when you see a beautiful light do a 180 and look behind you.
Hi Thomas, appreciate you may get this comment a lot but can I just say. Thomas Heaton, wild camping, in the uk, taking landscape images. This is the reason I subscribed to this channel many years ago and the reason I'm still here today. such easy watching and very calming in what is a very busy world. great video as always. thank you and keep doing it. love it.
I very much liked the pano. Nice choices in music.
Jason
This is why i watch every time. Just love these camping/photo vids. love how calm they are
You can't win 'em all, Thomas. Thanks for emphasising the point of balance that it can make or break an image
All these years later and still week in and week out, your videos fills me with inspiration and admiration. Truly can’t say thank you enough for your channel and all your efforts that come with it. I can’t wait to add your second book on my shelf next to the first one!
I have been watching your channel for a while now but have yet to leave a comment to say how much I enjoy your content. I especially enjoy your hiking and camping vlogs. Being relatively new to landscape photography, I find your patience and honest respect for your craft truly inspiring. Thank you for the effort you give every week to keep us entertained. The pano image you capture in this episode is absolutely beautiful. I hope you have a great week.
still don't fully understand how you make videos and photos as often as you do but as a loyal viewer I am so happy you do lol. These videos make my day
I don't often comment, however I must say I really think that the second "Image that didn't work" definitely worked, really nice shot.
Even when you don't end up with images you're thrilled about your videos stay satisfying to watch. Nice work!
Love the mountains 🏔, something in my soul is drawn to mountains and waterfalls
That jacket food thing is genius.
Thanks Thomas, I really enjoy these overnight hiking trips! The way you walk us through your thought process on why an image works or not is interesting and I like hearing it. Also, really liked how you were encouraging others to get out and camp. Regardless of what the weather does, it really is good for the soul 🏕
As a long time fan, I really enjoy Thomas' images because they - well to me anyway - follow a simple philosophy: that is, "Less is More". I really enjoy the simple minimalist shots that Thomas presents. They draw the viewers eye(s) to specific aspects within each (uncluttered) image. Solid work again Mr. Heaton...
Great video Tom. Really enjoyed this one, and a break from minimalism. Also good to see a couple of images in a different ratio to square or pano. Not saying I don’t like the minimalistic square or pano crop, but this made a nice change and reminded me somewhat of your early work and CZcams videos.
Last time I was up there (many years ago) I went up over Pike’O’Blisco onto Crinkle Crags and then a white out descended. As it was winter everything was white. I messed up my navigation and having decided to descend went the wrong way and dropped down into Eskdale. The phone box (pre mobile phones) didn’t have a phone in it, so I backtracked to a farm to ask if they would phone a taxi for us to get back to Langdale campsite as it was getting dark. The farmer’s wife was sympathetic to us and told us that loads of people make the same mistake, and gave us a mug of tea and a slab of apple pie while waited for the taxi in her kitchen. When the taxi arrived and picked us up, he told us that he’d made the same mistake also. Anyway the day after we decided to take the farmers wife some flowers for helping us out, but we couldn’t find the farm! It should have been just off the main path, but wasn’t there. So we were either saved by a ghost, or were worse at navigating than we thought. Not a photography story, but a great memory of being in the area and experiencing the generosity of local people.
Haha, what a great story. I like to think it was a ghost that saved you 🙂
I enjoyed the scene.... it's okay to not come away with a portfolio image. just admiring the beauty is a good night spent out in the wild
Thomas, I have said this before, and I will say it again, your videos take me to a new place every time. I try and put myself with you, watching and learning as you go along with your day. The best part about it is knowing that I have an escape chanel once or twice a week when you go on your adventures.
Some of your "failure" videos are often the best. Great 👍 teachings Thomas!
When i watch your videos, i totally understand why landscape photography is the hardest kind of photography.
I quite enjoyed vicariously tagging along on your outing! Lots of good info and it’s good to know others also struggle with Mother Nature when she is less than cooperative.
The best shot is definitely the panoramic
Oh man! Your perseverence is commendable as you spend day and night in wilderness to capture few good shots! Amazing and inspiring!
The three Tarns are difficult to shoot in the morning but in late autumn, for example November in the evening, the light hits Bowfell and makes for a beautiful composition
Now this is classic Thomas Heaton at best. Stunning landscapes. Camping and vlogs. Another one that goes into the looping playlist.
It's a great light with great "in-tent-city"....
So THAT'S why they call you a landscape photographer. :) Nice Thomas. Very nice. Tough luck in the morning but then...you're a landscape photographer, yes, a heck of a landscape photographer. Thanks for taking us along.
I remember watching several of your videos where you pointed out how you struggled in summer for inspiration. Yet here you are nearing midsummer's day and revelling in some spectacular conditions and light. Which only emphasises that great light can happen at any time of the year and any time of day. One of my favourite images is a panorama i took in the height of summer as a passing storm produced the most amazing burst of light..for about a minute! Great video and superb photos, in particular love the light in the first shot and the pano.
Cant think of a better place to have a coffee.
The image at 9:31 was breathtaking!!
Love these hiking trips, I continue to live vicariously through you and your adventures!
Definitely some portfolio-worthy shots on this trip! That pano is stunning!!
Many of us do. One day I’ll get out there with his confidence!
Thanks a lot, Dean. I'm glad you enjoyed this one 👍
Thomas, another great video and overnight in the Lakes. Thanks for taking the time to compile the CZcams video and sharing your time with us.
Loved this video, might be the best one in a while. I still enjoy seeing that all your shots don't work out how you wanted them, helps us mortals feel a little better.
Thanks again for one more video of the inside of a photographers work .
Wednesdays have become my favourite day thanks to these vlogs where just for approx. 20 mins I can lose myself. Thank you Thomas. 🙏🏽
Yup. When I get the text message notification during lunch at work on Wednesdays I know that I have something to look forward to watching when I get home.
And Baumgartner Restoration on Mondays.
Fantastic views and images, such an inspirational video as well. Really want to go camping now and soak up some of that scenery for myself and try and get close to a stunning image like yours. PS the sheep noise during the advertising for the Artlist website did crack me up. Always enjoy your videos and looking forward to the new book, I know I’ll enjoy it as much as the first one.
That ridge line pano is wow
Anyone else would have taken the shot 😂 looked fantastic with the silhouette at left and all the colour balancing the right 👍🏻
Your criteria for a great shot is some way above mine! You make it look effortless, which really means you’ve put in the hours to hone your skills. Marvellous.
The pano is stunning. Worth it just for that photo in my opinion. Beautiful!
The first shot you took I was thinking was going to be a fail, but man you have a gift. You saw beauty in that boring peak. It’s hard to get good shots like that in the middle of the day. Thanks for the inspiration.
In many films about landscape photography, the impression is given that it is all so simple to make a composition, but the reality is often different. Thanks Thomas for this honest video.
Absolutely love these videos! That pano is quite stunning
That square crop with the boulder in the water at sunrise was actually quite tasty !! The mood of the shot from the night before was great too !!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Basic, well-structured. Balanced with tips, gear, location and beautiful images. Makes me want to get off the streets and into the wild for a change of pace and environment.
i so much enjoy this video , thank you Thomas
I generally enjoy your content and you as a person! You make me wanna grab my camera more often and take it for a spin!
Thank you for the effort and those super sympathetic adventures Tom!
Always a good day to see a new Heaton upload 🌺
Thanks Tom - I really love your downbeat, say it as it is, northern style. Its refreshing. . . and I also want to appreciate how much effort and work you put into producing your excellent videos. . . Thumbs up from me 👍
always so inspiring
Thomas Heaton at his best. Great taste, great texture. Five stars.
Fantastic video Tom, I think your best for a long time. I'm impressed with your photos as much as your filming - having in mind that you do it all by yourself, somewhere in between chasing the light. For me, these vidos are much more inspiring than all the great trips to Nepal or Africa.
the light and your voice and the camera fov is so gorgeous at 16:41
Loved the pano and misty mountain top shots! Gorgeous stuff.
Lest we forget what it really takes to get great landscapes
I love these camping photography trips you do. Love watching everything about the place, your gear, your tent, food etc. Even if you don't come away with an epic photo on this particular trip. Part of the journey. Thanks Thomas.
Haven't been out shooting and camping in the mountains in 2 years now. So looking forward to my next multiday hike, so this is my methadone. Thanks man.
always love your videos! thank you Thomas!
That pano and the quality of light in it are just beautiful!
THX Thomas!
sempre il top!!
You are not alone. I have been there at dawn four January's in a row and its hard to put a satisfying scene together. Its a spot which promises so much and draws you back because it is quite difficult to believe that you cannot organise the elements in a more satisfying configuration. The east face of Scafell catches alpenglow on a January morning but it seems too far away when shooting west over the little tarn with a wide Ange. Bowfell gets in the way of everything to the east. Sometimes the key just cannot be found.
Wow! As the kids say, that pano is fire. 🔥 🔥 🔥
I really prefer these videos Thomas. When I started following you this is what you were doing and what drew me in. Stick with this style mate, good education, not polished to death and simple. 👍
What a lovely, inspiring video on its simplicity. Much appreciated.
Oh come on Thomas! You cannot be so critical about these pictures, especially the last one cropped square. As You’re my professor of simplicity and square classes, it’s another example of job well done, not to mention beautiful light. I know, good teachers set their personal bars higher and higher, and so do You. Keep going, great video as always!
Very cool view...beautiful mountains enchanting...beautiful lake...
Great location for camping and photography activities...
You’re always an inspiration Thomas and entertaining as well
Proper Thomas Heaton video. Love it.
I've been waiting for these videos. Great work.
Totally enjoyed this, Thomas. Thanks!! The relaxation, peace and quiet...wonderful.
Thomas Heaton the way we remember him 😆
Well done, not all posts have to be perfect, thanks for showing us the real world.
That pano is beautiful… Great video, love your stories and adventures as always.
Thanks Thomas
your reality comes across so often and well keep it up, as the character Old Lodge Skins in the movie Little Big Man says; "sometimes the magic works and sometimes it doesn't"
Wow, love the second photo..
I am constantly blown away by the panoramic photos. Something about seeing everything in a wide like that just makes me happy. Awesome video as always.
I like the occasional video showing the reality even the best photographers experience. So often, or most often, we see only the best work in many CZcams videos. Not the struggle nor the failures. It is actually encouraging to see that every photgrapher at every level has difficulty some days. I appreciate the successes more, mine as well, when balanced with the real world experience behind getting them.
Beautiful
I actually really like the shot of the rock in the middle of the tarn at sunrise Tom! I'd be over the moon with that one myself.
love the camping videos
Classic Heaton video - really great - many thanks!!
Great watch as always.
Another great production - thanks..
Image or no image, your camping videos are always fun 👌🏻
The pano was great. Thank you for sharing.
A return back to classic form!! I love your videos Tom, but you in a mountain backdrop, taking stunning vista shots, is what really drew me into your channel. Love the pano shot the most, and the cheeky ‘sheep sound effect’ was hilarious. Thank you.
Thanks for the entertaining video! I always enjoy what you do Thomas!
Another great video Thomas, I like the camping ones most as its like a step back to your roots, where you started. Keep up the good work!
