Rudy often talks about not making emotional decisions, but as a psychology major I can say, what he actually means is reactive decisions. If you don't have a game plan, don't have a sense for how the market works and what you want to do in it, then you're left watching what your holdings do every day going, "Ahhh, it's doing this, what should I do?!" Which is why regular people who start doing day trading inevitably get crushed.
I still kick myself for selling my magic cards back in 2010. All my big Unlimited, Antiquties, Legends cards sold pretty fast. I hadnt played in so long I figured I wouldnt play again.
I had that nostalgic twinge as they sold off, but didnt think it would last.
2015 came around and I wanted to get back into the game again. Then I really missed my old cards, and looking at the prices they were going for was a real kick in the teeth.
Hindsight is a harsh mistress.
Yup I feel ya. I sold all my big cards in 2000… Came back in 2020 and was shocked at what I sold was worth now.

This is stupid logic... You didn't lose anything, you failed to make money, thats like saying you lost $50000 last year because you didn't get a night job.... Failing to make money is not losing money....
Funny, I actually love buying full sets of dead ccgs I enjoyed since I can get them at a steep discount and always have fun playing with friends. I think even if your cards lose value you at least have a game you can play and still trade with friends.
WoTC released Duel Masters in 2004 and it died. It got rebranded in 2012 as Kaijudo along with an anime series, and it also died. And this was a Magic mini-me released by Wizards of the Coast.

If you have red pitch Alpha cards, I'd be interested in buying some. :) They're iconic, because they all have pink pitch strips in Alpha (except Razor Reflex).

I started playing both MTG and Pokémon the year they each started and also purchased a lot of collectibles around that same time. Well guess what all those collectible action figures (that I still have in the boxes) are worth? About the same amount I paid after decades of storage. Now think about the packs of cards I opened, if I had just saved one or two Beta packs, I would be rich, I can't even tell you how many Unlimited and Revised packs I opened... You live and you learn.. I made the mistake of selling off my collection a couple times, imagine how much money I lost. Then in 2014 I lost a 5 color Dragon deck with 13 duel lands, talk about sadness, I quit the game for almost 5 years because of that loss.. But now I tell the people in my life who want me to sell all my cards that as far as I know Baseball Cards, Pokémon and Magic Cards have never really gone down in price over time, so its not going to change today and the cards I have now will be worth more tomorrow. Do yourself a favor and save as much sealed product as you can.

Jake from Pokenonics preaches this same concept of purchasing what you enjoy. Investing is holding long term because you believe in something and won't have weak will to hold. It so much easier to hold when you actually enjoy the product outside of the market

To be fair, legend of the five rings card game lasted from like 1996 until 2020 😅. It was never good for value players, just actual players.

Highest case known to of been sold… was 35,000 USD. For alpha. 20,000 for arcane rising case. Recently a few alpha cases sold for 15,000 usd on ebay. Its nice to keep a little bit for the long long of everything even if its one box. 🎉

The fastest lesson I've learned on my recent journey into sealed product is that if WOTC can reprint it, they will, and it will NOT appreciate in value.
It will always appear that way until it doesn’t and I think this market will turn faster than anyone can predict. The problem is when. I say as always stay the course, but what you believe in. Minimize your downside risk and ride it out. You will make it out okay in time. Even gatecrash is $150 now…

Yeah AoA is a terrible set, even most if thd biggest KF fans avoid it and it was hugely mass printed. KF isn't an investible game, just a really fun to play 1

My brother is the opposite of you. He bought the max limit of the kits and threw them in the closet. When he sold his first box, he sold it for $3k on ebay. And the funny thing is, Steve Aoki was the customer.
I know it takes a lot from a person to admit their mistakes. You're a strong person for doing this. We've all made plenty of mistakes on the same or even higher caliber than yours. That is a prerequisite of life. The difference between a successful person and an unsuccessful person is how they internalize that mistake. The result that derives from that mistake varies dramatically between the two persons.

Mana confluence is probably because a LOT of people bought that pride month Secret Lair.
As far as The Great Henge is concerned, I think your definition of "soooo cheap" might be a little different from mine...

You didnt lose what you never had… moreso you just didnt accurately predict the future (isnt easy)
Thats rough, sorry about that. Here's how I look at investing in cardboard. Theres no college degree to get to learn this game, its experince and learing from others. So, when you take a loss, treat it as a course as what not to do.
I think also, having a title like that "Lost $54K" you should also let people know how much value that is to your collection. If thats 2%, then your good, lesson learned. There is a book called "Come Into My Trading Room" by Dr. Alexander Elder, where he talks about 2% and 6% rules for investing. For FAB, the most I would have investend into that would have been 2%, that is a very risky buy, almost like options. If the TCG isnt on ICv2's top 3 TCG list, its a risk for me. MTG, Pokemon, and Yu-Gi-Oh is the main stays.
The Alpha kit was the first thing I bought from Rudii, still got it! Also scooped a few more as the months went on... for various reasons i wasn't able to and didn't sell them....
I bought a case of cru first edition when it was only 320 shipped. Now it's 320 a box. I still own it. I was going to save it for years when the price would go up. I did not expect it to go to 600 a box. Part of me thinks I should have sold but I just waited thinking it would go higher. It doesn't matter. I still own it. I'll still keep owning it. Maybe someday it'll be 600 or I'll just sell it. Either way I'll make money at this point unless the game dies which I don't think it will. I am an avid flesh and blood player. I gave up magic over this and I won't go back at this point
CRU is a bit rough as you can’t draft or play it sealed. But otherwise I’m always in support of people finding their own ways to enjoy products. I lost faith in FaB and came back in at the worst possible time…. Haha MON era. But honestly I still think the game is fun I played sealed TOA with some of my friends and it is fun. I wish they would come to my area. I will play some sealed in events.
@@SolarGamesllc cru is an interesting beast. I am looking at the price per box of unlim right now and the price of all the cards in it. The cards have been regaining their value slowly. Tbf it has many staples and was the first set I was actually able to aquire... I got an extra case just because I liked the set so much. It is not draftable but it is still the lynch pin in many decks.
I pretty much only play viserai... Without mauvrion skies, he would be almost unplayable these days.

Honestly it all is a bubble until it is not. What matters the most to you should be if you like the game or not. If you don’t like it don’t invest in it. No need to do anything more than that.

I liked it a lot more before some things happend, still see the potential but yeah honestly im more feared atm that it become just a money machine goes brrr thing and i would stand behind this. Ya don't sweat it,there will always be more opportunities,I sold my alpha box for way less too simply because I had a cap on eBay lol but now I have a huge position in metazoo,bam, demon slayer, kryptik,I was never sold on flesh and blood anyways,for some reason it didn't resonate with me but we live and learn and the truth is,it's all worthless paper proped up by nostalgia and investors..every single tcg so ya..buy what you love and collect,if you wanna buy sealed and flip it then great but just know there will always be a better opportunity around the corner

Sorry to hear but I think a lot of us have similar stories with childhood pokemon collection and others. You didn't loose anything, just failed to gain so your no worse off really. Hindsights a bitch but you should collect, play and invest in what you enjoy.

Greed. I had interest in FaB until I saw how much the booster boxes were going for before they started the unlimited reprint policy. Just so many greedy people playing the scalping game for bullshit. I hate the game now simply for that reason. Lots of people say its fun but I watched some play and just wasn't interested in its system. People make money with all kinds of things. Losing out on potential 'gold mines' isn't the same as actually taking business losses imo. I sold mtg cards I could've made a few thousand off of nowadays but who gives a shit. Its cardboard at the end of the day and I'm not interested in doing the antique collectible thing of overpricing for something that can be so easily reproduced for pennies. Buy gold or silver if you want something that holds value.
