Two bass players walk into a hotel room.....one is Robert Trujillo, who, prior to joining Metallica, played with Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Osbourne. The other? Sam Dunn, formerly of Burn to Black and currently the guy on BangerTV who asks the deep questions. Sam and Rob sat down before Metallica's sold-out club show to discuss Hardwired....to Self-Destruct, its killer track "Spit out the Bone," and the role of bass in heavy metal music.

Robs the coolest guy ever! In 97 when I was 17 and I snuck backstage at an ozzfest and ran in to rob, being a big suicidal fan I approached him and told him I snuck backstage and told him I wanted to meet Ozzy. He said it would be hard to meet Ozzy but gave me his backstage pass and told me to hang tight and came back with tony iommi and Ozzys autograph. He hung out with me for about a half hour and even introduced me as a famous guitar player to some chicks. I'll never forget that night! Rob is the man! Cool dude!
I managed to sneak back stage at their Orion Festival in Detroit. My experience wasn’t as cool as yours but he was just as super cool as you said. He’s a super awesome guy!
Tommy J r/thathappened
@@jonwilmer2925 what happened, tell us everything
No way
Suicidal! S T...
You can hate on Lars' drumming all you want, but his ability as a song writer and his overall instinct for metal is special.
honestly he’s not even bad anymore and hasn’t been for a while
Lars Ulrich hater = *DOUCHEBAG*
@@behimveladzic7701 yeah Lars is pretty unique
I mean, hating on him is fun because it can get embarrassing sometimes. But he's a fucking beast, regardless
Lars arranges all the parts into songs. He rarely gets credit for how important he is to the quality of the songwriting
Rob seems like a really down to earth nice guy.
Chris L Deftones. Nice
Because he is. Always was.
The guy is truely amazing. He's beyond a fucking beast compared to Jason and Cliff. So sick of the kids saying the usual "i miss jason i miss cliff" ridiculous.
lol.No.
Michael H. Uhh lol.Yes. Guy shreds over cliff and jason
Rare moment when we have something with Rob on music. Sometimes I feel like nobody else cares about songwriting. For me this is the most important thing - music itself as a core. More important than sound, tuning, brand of instrument, and other stuff. .
Andriy Vasylenko hey I'm sub, I always see you in rob's videos, greetings from Honduras \m/
Angel Páz Nice to see you here \m/
Andriy Vasylenko ну без должного навыка(не только техники, но и знания звучания гитар и педалей) невозможно нарисовать полную картину музыки )
Andriy Vasylenko - As a musician I think things like tuning and sound are really an essential part of the music. - It wasn't for nothing that composers like Mozart and the like would insist on certain instruments being used or pieces played at a certain tempo. - In my opinion and experience whenever a band like MetallicA rushes their songs (playing at an inappropriate tempo) or in a different tuning, they're doing a disservice to the original music and thus songwriting. - So I can not agree that things like sound and tuning (7:48, and he states it, but they still ignore that fact live) and the like are less important. - Brands and things, yea, that's more superficial. But people underestimate the sound and feel around a piece of music, which dictate what the song feels like in the end.
Andriy🤘🏻🤘🏻
gives album 2.5 review, but has nothing but positive things to say about that same album when seated across from a member of the band. this fucking guy here....
Bashing an album in the front of a bandmember who was responsable for creating it is pretty rude. The album has its good moments and those moments should be mentioned in moments like this.
He's sitting across from a member that didn't have anything to do with writing the songs.
It's generally how fake metal websites operate.
One of the genuinely chill dudes in music.
Cody Granrud the most chill dudes in metal
Rob seems like the coolest down to earth Metallica member with the least ego of them all.
I'd say that right now, they all are very laid back.
Alejandro Serrano yeah, I think Lars is the interview hogger
Jessica P Aren't Metalheads tired of bashing Lars
He and Jason are both like that.
No. Fuck Lars
I can't understand why so many Metallica fans refuse to accept Robert even after all these years. He is awesome. And I'm a Metallica fan from the start. I loved Cliff, I loved Jason, now I loved Robert. Why so much hate?
I agree! I really dig Rob's stage presence. The way he stands is so laid back, almost literally!
I saw a commet a while back "no one hates metallica more than a metallica fan". I listened to all of their major albums in chronological order (st anger excluded, i want to hear that in a time of its own) and loved every bassist. Cliff was the GOAT, jason was nothing short of a beast during gigs giving 120% everytime and the last ones with Rob, the chillest of them all, that fits great in the band since now they are older and more chill.
@Victor Buford racist
I Love Em All for different reasons.
I've yet to hear anyone say he's not a fit in Metallica except for the whiners.
Rob is the future of Metallica. Amazing bassist and person, and an incredible showman
Why does nobody talk about the intro of the manunkind? The bass sound of that intro is spectacular!
DX That song is one of my favorites on the album. It's so underrated and gets so much hate.
Spit out the bone is my favorite track
PhiloSophia ManUnkind is an amazing song.
ManUNkind is one of my favs!
"Lars had a vision of the bass sound" Fuck that must be painful for Rob :D
that awkward moment when you gave the new album a 2.5 and then you interview a band member
The skull system is bad cuz its out of 5. Out of 10 is really the way to go i think.
Nothing awkward about it, mate! Gotta tell it as you see it when reviewing records, doesn't mean you can't still respect the artist and have a good chat.
BANGER now that's the truth. been a life long metal fan and can still enjoy many bands live even if I didn't like the latest album. thats why we have back catalog.
Now he is kissing ass, what a diverse record and when rob isnt there he gives it 2,5stars.. if you really think about it this way atleast give 1 critical question or remark..
I lost all the respect for you
Beg to differ. Kissing Ass would be NOT reviewing a record critically because you knew you were going to have to sit and face the artist, or giving a good rating just so you could score points at the interview. We think our fans want us to be honest with our opinions in the reviews.
It's awesome how one person gets to be a bassist of Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves AND Metallica. :D
Trollstation123 and ozzy
and Black Label Society!
Trollstation123 And Ozzy, you forgot Ozzy
Great talent, good timing and a little luck.
He also did work on some albums for Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains and Glenn Tipton from Judas Priest.
most people wouldn't expect lars to be responsible for spit out the bone and those arrangements
lars isn't the best drummer out there, far from it. but when it comes to songwriting he's a genious! along with hetfield ofc.
because most people just blindly hate the man for shit that happened 20 years ago that doesn't even pertain to them in the slightest
most of us make fun of Lars and his drumming ability because it's really not anywhere near where it should be. However, when you look at Metallica since the early eighties, he has been as involved in writing and arranging the songs as any other member of the band.
What's surprising to me is that Kirk did not contribute to the songwriting on the album at all. He only came in and did his solos.
Don't know if you already know but he lost his phone.
This guy is the best bassist they've ever had.
Yep....I said it.......
Cliff had the chops......the shred.....but Rob's got that too...plus Rob has a pocket that Cliff never did. It's just insane how locked in this guy is especially with James.
He's being kind when he says he and Lars have become a great rhythm section....the reality now is that it's him and James that are the rhythm section.
FACTS!!!!!!!
The chemistry between James and Rob is unreal! Gotta love it!
Rob for playing.
Jason for vocals.
End of story :)
True.....Jason's got him on the vocals....lol.
doublestrokeroll Cliff's vocals were better than Jason's.
Let's not forget James voice on this record is better since Black album.
I think Banger will come to regret his tepid review of the new Metallica album. The album wears really well. The more you listen, the more the songs become firmly entrenched in the pantheon/catalog. There are truly great songs, epic riffs, and memorable vocals. Ultimately, I found Banger's review to be a bit unfair -- thoughtful and well reasoned yes -- but unfair.
Elmo Blatch you can listen to the worst song on this album comfortably with minimal cringe. The same can't be said for Death Magnetic.
Banger Guy just hates Metallica's success. thats all
Yeah, he should have rated it a solid 4 at least. After the Black album, it has become the cool and 'in' thing to hate on Metallica. Some of the albums deservedly so but not this one.
4 admittedly awesome tracks & 8 average ones with lacklustre drumming the whole way thru does not a great album make
TheSt0rmrider I disagree. You probably only give 4 songs the "great" nod only due to the speed of the songs... which makes too many old school Metallica fans stubborn and unable to appreciate med-tempo songs. I think we can agree on at least 3 songs being unnecessary filler. I actually like 8-9 songs more than anything I've heard on Death Magnetic or Beyond Magnetic. The production alone makes them winners. I do want something more though when it comes to the sound (more reverb and ambience on Lars' drums). But this album beats DM by a landslide.
He always looks so chill and cool, while looking like a beast at the same time. I love Robert!
I rate Hardwired...To Self-Destruct 10/10 Hands down \m/
One of the best albums of 2016
lol
Metal Cece nah
Trujillo interviews are always great
Sam is a solid critic and interviewer. There's nothing phony about the guy and he asked good questions.
It's refreshing to see an interviewer who genuinely knows what he is talking about. Glad I found this channel. Have seen your documentaries and love them.
Thanks! Welcome!
Thank you for sticking up for standard tuning, Rob! I'm so sick of these modern guys who can't write a heavy riff without tuning down to Gb or whatever.
UmbraFractus for a whole decade Metallica had done that.
Sam is the consummate metal interviewer - a great combination of personal substance and music knowledge. A pleasure to listen/watch!
I wanted this interview to go on and on!
It was cool to hear some Black Sabbath influences in the new album.
Load was an album that had the same influence.
Pajtim Hasani Yeah it did
MJNation MOP had it too
Shrek and Harambe messenger 82 I like your name and picture lol
MJNation yeah and Maiden and Mastodon too
It's a great album. Period.
Man, I just love your interviews. The questions are so intelligent and respectful. Awesome work!
Album rating aside, two bassists having a great conversation. Rob should do podcasts he has interesting perspectives and is very well spoken.
so nice to see an interview with Rob! he had so many interesting things to say. good job Banger
The new album really grows on you. At first I thought it had some great songs and some meh songs, but now I understand each song just sort of fits. Probably why Sam gave a 2.5 because he may have reviewed it after listening to it for a couple of times which is not enough to understand the album completely.
Vishal Sheth totally agree, this album is a grower.
I have been listening to Metallica since 1985. I feel this album should have came out after Justice
Isn't it kinda sad to that we have to listen it the album so much more that we should need to before liking it?
I felt the same with the new Weezer white album, it grows big time
I get this, but then you get albums where you straight away go "ok I'll be listening to this forever" like Scenes From A Memory by Dream Theater.
Rob is down to earth, especially because he's being interviewed by Sam Dunn who trashed the album and gave it a 2.5.
Troncoso That's like 50% out of hundred. It deserved better than that. I think sometimes only artists should critique other artists, because being a great musician takes so much time and effort and talent. Most of us wouldn't even know how to hold an instrument let alone play one.
Stingray78 Totally agree. I bet he didnt mention to Rob that he rated the album 2.5 lol
Troncoso Do we really know what we are actually listening for when critiquing a song.
I don't. I either like it or I don't. In no way is it a knowledgeable musical opinion.
The album was bad, it deserved to be trashed.
Greetings from Norway Banger rules Rob too always awesome humble guy great with Ozzy, ST,Metallica etc
What a great interview, very interesting.
This new album really does tilt the hat to all the past albums with a tinge of new elements. It's honestly refreshing to me. Another awesome interview Sam, keep them coming dude!
I love the Canadian interviews, always so clean and well done. And great questions.
Man he is such a cool guy
Rob is such a great humble musician!! He gets mad respect and i think Cliff would be really happy hes part of Metallica! What a cool dude! 🤘😎
Infectious Grooves.
Great job! Very engaging interview! Keep bringin it Sam!
Excellent questions. Didn't expect it, but positively surprised!
Always Enjoy these Interviews they’re incredible & Very Detailed 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Great interview! As a bass player that started playing in 8th grade when Rob was in Suicidal, it was great to see you two communicate bassist-bassist. Also, it was almost like a justification to what I've been saying for eternity by getting Rob's take on Geezer. Cheers!
Very cool interview. Rob's thoughtful responses to the questions was fun to watch. Good questions being asked, too.
3:15 Also love to see the still shot of the boys, each has a look of intensity on their face.
tyvm for the interview!
Great interview. Really enjoyed it.
Great interview Sam!As a bass player myself I enjoy listening to these kinds of conversations about the writing process from the bass players perspective.
Rob fits in Metallica so well!! best bassist for Metallica since Cliff!! May he rest in peace 🙏🤘
I understand Sam Dunn respects Metallica but I honestly feel he should've gave them way more credit than 2.5. I also notice he didn't mention one critical remark about the album while interviewing Rob but had a lot to say when he reviewed the album.
Dude never listen to critics. Critics didn't like the beatles, black sabbtah, and led zeppelin. Over history critics have shown to be wrong and have no say in how music is perceived so ignore that guy and keep rockin out to the song.
Give them way more credit than a 2.5? The album barely deserves that! Its mediocre and dull as fuck for the most part only a couple of tunes are enjoyable the rest of the album is underwhelming or less. People need to have higher standards.
Mister Tago Mago Definetely.
Mister Tago Mago That's your opinion dude. The album is awesome Hands down \m/
Metal Cece I get that we should all just respect each others opinions but no its not awesome, and at the risk of sounding like a complete asshole douchebag I think anyone who says its awesome is either fooling themselves because its Metallica or simply hasnt listened to enough go ok d metal in the first place.
Great interviewer and Rob is great as usual. I met Metallica back in '04 when Rob just joined and he was such a nice guy. They all were in fact but Rob was really genuine.
Great interview. Way to delve into the writing and creating process.
Always so great to see truly, genuinely GOOD GUYS at the top of the metal game!
Great interview.
this interview is nice, i can see happiness in robert while hearing NIB bass part
Another Great Interview Sam!! \m/
Rob must be the most humble guy in the music industry.
tanks sam it's GREAT interview EVER! , I love Robert Trujillo . . he is great Bass master . .. .
Que agradable persona es Robert Trujillo !!!
Great interview
Rob is a complete badass bassist. He truly compliments metallica's sound. Newsted will always be my fav, but they could't have possible found a better replacement
Agreed
Always been a fan of his , class act & awesome musician 🤘🏻
"So you mentioned Geezer..." The mighty doom master Geezer, godfather of metal bass, scribbler of doom lyrics, the other half of the Iommi riff factory...
Man Robert is really growing on me never thought I'd like anyone as much as Jason
+BANGER So, you gave a 2.5/5 to an album with songs like these:
Spit Out the Bone
Atlas, Rise!
Moth Into Flame
Now that we're dead
Hardwired
Halo on Fire
Lords of Summer
Nice work buddy, like if were common listen to albums with more than 7 pretty good songs. Besides, the production and the sound of the record is on top.
Great chatting!! x')
The kid he describes, wild and all over the place, but really gets his shit together when he grows up, that is a really great description of me. Metallica my whole life has been a great influence and outlet and helped me so much its impossible to put words to. Thank you Metallica for continuing to give us great music
Excellent and intelligent interview!
Robert Rocks!!
It's cool to see that with the fame, and fortune that he hasn't let it go to his head. Robert seems like he would be a cool guy to hang out with, play pool, and chill.
Very good interview actually
Very natural feel to it
Met Rob in 2002. Great guy and a killer bass player
Rob had a studio in Santa Fe Springs CA. We were just about ready to hit him up about recording there and he got the gig with Metallica. Never met Rob but so happy for him nonetheless. Great guy, great bass player.
such a cool guy and down to earth
Awesome. Thank you, Sam. METALLICA!!!!
Rob is so down to earth (and super fiiiiiiiiiiine!). 👏👏👏👏
Such a cool speaking voice.
I’m not even a Metal fan, but Metallica is a super talented group of guys.
Good interview
Rob is a terrific player.
Best track on the album, by far! There is so much energy in it. What metal is all about!
Rob is becoming my favorite Metallica member. Just so casual cool.
A MASTERPIECE BASSIST!!! STILL KICKIN' MAYOR ASS TODAY!!! AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!!! LOVE THIS BAND!!! YOU CAN'T STOP METALLICA!!!🎼🙏🎵🎶🎸🔥🤘🥁👊
Rob Trujillo On Spit Out The Bone:
"Yippe I got a solo!"
Interesting. I have heard 3 interviews conspicuously leaving Kirk out of the equation.
dkyelak also apparent in the "making of" vids for the new album.
dkyelak Kirk It's too lazy for riffs and lyrics writting he only invent solos (all Of them sounds The same)
Tony Thrash It's not that he's too lazy, he simple lost his riffs on the cellphone. I believe Lars said that he indeed lost his phone with his riffs.
***** I think James probably stole the phone and destroyed it since the riffs wouldn't have been used anyway. I actually think Kirk was just lying and had no riffs.
***** Ha! I forgot to add the sarcasm symbol.
That was cool,thanks!!!Sub'd!!!!
I love all three Metallica bassist, all of em are beast! 🔥🔥
Lars can be a handful sometimes as we have seen from the past, but he's personality is actually pretty good and needed for making music. Because he knows how to write good music and when he hears something that has to be there, then he fights for it. The same goes for James. I am grateful that Lars, James, Kirk and Rob still make music together and tour the world, because alot of us need the music that they write.
Rob- class act!
Rob is very humble for my opinion. Talented bass player. Go on Robert.
Mr Cliff burton, you would be quite happy to meet Mr Trujillo, His respectful of you and he plays a mean 5 string as u. Merry Christmas.
Mark W don't think I ever saw cliff play a 5 stringer
so good
That groovy riff in the song is very similar to one about halfway through The Crumbsuckers song 'Rejuvenate'.
At 4:16 the pic of Larz looking like Bill Murray in The Life Aquatic.
Robert is good guy! I wish him all the best!
first time to Banger. I freaked out when I saw Sam as the interviewer haha.
Thank Ozzy for Sam and his qualety interviews! :D Do an Flight 666 documentary only with Metallica :D
That was a nice change for an interview. It wasn't with Lars and it was about playing the bass
I dig Rob. He seems like a really cool guy.
melodicism. the way the song flows.
That’s some amazing sound right there from a 4x4'' box. Totally room-filling!
Great sound and camera on this one, and great interview. What sound and video equipment do you use?
