PHO Webinar: ASPHIO White Paper Highlighting the Vital Role of Public Health Inspectors

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of the Public Health Inspector (PHI) workforce and their role in protecting and promoting the health of communities. In addition, it underscored their specialized training, skills, and competencies, including their ability to adapt to changing conditions while responding to a wide range of public health challenges.
This session will provide an overview of the Association of Supervisors of Public Health Inspectors of Ontario’s (ASPHIO) White Paper Highlighting the Vital Role of Public Health Inspectors Within a Responsive and Effective Public Health Workforce. This report highlights the urgent need to invest in the PHI workforce at every stage of the professional pipeline to ensure that PHIs are equipped to maintain essential public health services and be prepared for emerging issues and future emergencies as part of the larger multi-disciplinary public health workforce in Ontario health units.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Discuss the status of the PHI workforce
• Understand how the pandemic impacted routine programs and services delivered by PHIs
• Identify how PHIs played a critical role Ontario’s pandemic response by leveraging core knowledge, skills, and abilities, and how the adaptability and versatility of PHIs can be leveraged in a future strengthened public health system
• Be aware of recommendations intended to support increasing and retaining PHIs across the province with competencies to work in a variety of roles within a strengthened public health system, both in traditional environmental health work and new/evolving areas now and in the future
