Steely Dan is a musical aesthetic - an original genre, all its own.
Turning 35 makes one a Dan fan, turning 45 makes this your go-to party song.
"Aja" is the finest Steely Dan primer out there. Once you've heard that, nothing will ever be the same for you.
I love the lyric
"Hey 19 that's 'Retha Franklin. She don't remember the queen of soul...." Perfect way to show the age and cultural difference between them
A crime considering she was nineteen in the 70's
@@ReesesPieces634 Aretha was thinking of suing the band for making listeners think teens didn't know her music...she relented.
"ney Nineteen, that's STeely Dan..... "
@@marcisikoffreally? Wow
Peg and FM are two funktastic Steely Dan songs! You really can’t go wrong with Steely Dan.
Yes!!! And Don't forget Babylon sisters. ✌️
@@JimmieBuffet-qi3lk Yeck, yeah! Great song!
@@karenmikalofsky5287 😊✌️
@@JimmieBuffet-qi3lk That chorus was banned by some radio stations for pulling too many teenage boys through puberty j/k
Agreed. FM is a particular favorite of mine that gets overlooked, maybe a little, in all their great work.
The cuervo Gold... The fine Colombian
But which Columbian product? Or both IMO or party world of ‘79 is. My girlfriend was 21 and I was 28. She knew music because she had 2 older brothers…
Steely Dan. Your favorite band's favorite band
Deacon Blues is a great Steely Dan song I highly recommend.
Steely Dan is the go to band for professional musicians.
Their song ‘Peg’ will knock your socks off.
This track was released in 1980 so it's 43 YEARS OLD.... and it still sounds fantastic. Steely Dan is known for many things and one of them is their "back up" singers. Great reaction. Take care.
Steely Dan is another rabbit hole.
But it's Smooth and Tight! 😁🥰
This is the music we play at the bbq after the kids are in bed…
Hit after hit after hit after hit. Steely Dan is pretty awesome with an extensive catalog.
Steely Dan is my one and only "desert island" pick. The breadth and depth of their catalog is astounding. Enjoy the adventure that is Steely Dan!
Great reaction Ashley! Steely Dan has a deserved reputation of being many musician's favorite band. I'd recommend next their - Do It Again and /or Black Cow.
Don't forget Kid Charlemagne..
What an amazing band they were. And surely someone has already mentioned the origin of their name? Josie from their Aja album is a great chill groove that I bet you would like.
Ashley! I really enjoyed you actually GETTING it. Every note and every chord progression is seriously thought through. This is no garage band and they're not using 18th century tonality. Donald Fagen has called his writing "pantonal." In other words, half the time you can't tell if he's even IN a key. The chords have added notes to thicken them and divert you from figuring out what key they're in at any one time. This is why Steely Dan is so unique. Their music stimulates the brain by poking it with something it can't readily interpret, thus you can listen over and over and never get tired of hearing it.
Hey Nineteen is essentially a don't about appreciating some hot nineteen year old, but he'll appreciate her from afar because he's got nothing in common with someone so young.
Yeah, Steely Dan is a huge Rabbit hole! You will like many songs from them, for instance Green earrings or Deacon blues or Don't take me alive.
We would skate at the rink in the 70's to that song just great
If you painted those pictures behind you GREAT JOB! and if you didn't, my compliments to the artist!
I was one month away from being 17 when this song came out. Steely Dan was one I could not get enough of.
Yes Yes YES! So glad you were digging SteelyDan - when you groovin’ right here 4:44 I can *SEE* you with your skates on getting down at the roller rink. 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼
Such a great song. And just as the end begins, Fagan says "nice" and I guarantee it was in response to the drummer tossing in that 'pss, pss' accent on the hi-hat.
I laughed so many times when the good thing hit your ears.
Yes! On of my favorite Steely Dan songs, glad it found you 🔥
This is the best music trip of all, have listened to them since I was 14 years old and I just turned 60. Must listen to “Do it Again” “Rikki don’t lose that number” “Black Cow” “AJA” etc you will not be disappointed and very pleasantly surprised. Music teachers from Berklee used to teach using Steely Dan music as a base to learn how to write and produce music
This song was great at the Roller rink back in tha day. With that big Dico ball in the middle . ... waiting to start the Limbo contest. GOOD TIMES. ✌️
You should research how they came upon the name "Steely Dan" . . . . . It'll give you a chuckle!
Please listen to Steely Dan's greatest FUNK song ! ( str8 fire) - called " Green Earrings " !
I agree, you have to go with whatever feels good on your ears! Great reaction!
This is what a bunch of talented musicians sound like. Been a fan of SD since 73. Not a bad song on this album or any of their albums. Love yo see your reactions to more SD. Their debut album Can't By A Thrill has some excellent songs. Album Aja another great one.
steely dan have so many songs that evoke this type of reaction...
Welcome to your new fav band.
I haven't figured out how the drummer keeps that kick bass drum rhythm, and still play the top drums in lock groove.
Its great seeing that more people getting into the tunes I grew up on. I like to go way back "Dirty Work - Can't Buy Me A Thrill" (1972) "Any Major Dude - Pretzel Logic" (1974) “Kid Charlemagne - The Royal Scam” (1976) Hard to find a bad Steely Dan song.
Babylon Sisters (The sexiest chorus in captivity), Bodhisattva, Reeling In The years, Haitian Divorce, Josie, Deacon Blues. Daddy Don't live in that new York city no more, third World Man, Kid Charlemagne.... that's off the top of my head. PERFECT SONGS. Seriously, they were perfectionists.
No Dr. Wu or Bad Sneakers and a dozen more?
Love em all!
Super smoooooth....
The Cuervo Gold the fine Columbian. Make tonight a wonderful thing! Say it again. Tequila and weed. Peace, Love, Courage from David in Detroit.
"The Cuervo Gold...The fine Colombian...Make tonight a wonderful thing..."
This song, FM, Peg, Babylon sisters, time out of time, are great ones also.👍🏿
My being a new subscriber to your channel Ashley, enjoying myself immensely catching up with all of your reaction videos.
Steely Dan is one of those eclectic bands that permeated the 1970's. It seemed like their music could be played by any radio station and the listeners would like what they heard.
This song can be listed as jazz or Yachat rock. You'll love this music.
Loved your reaction Ashley, Steely Dan have produced some seriously excellent music, I highly recommend "Home at Last" or "Peg" next if you want to hear more....Steely Dan are Walter Becker & Donald Fagen who write/play/produce all their music and they choose the best session musicians to play on their tracks.
I recommend Black Cow, Glamour Profession, My Rival and Deacon Blues just to name a few. Actually, play any SD and it’ll be great!
My favorite by steely Dan is Deacon Blues… can’t go wrong!!
You're hooked! It's over for you girl😎
Steely Dan is not a Band!! They are 2 dudes with a rotating flux of incredible session band players...incredible song writing and incredible production. Should start with the song 'Peg', which blesses us with the great Michael McDonald on background vocals.
Michael backed this track too.
Skunk Baxter… The Guitar Man 🎸
In the Germantown section of Philadelphia where I worked, I was the only Caucasian for miles, they referred to Steely Dan as white man's Jazz. Also there is no mr. Dan, I will do my best to keep the rest of this comment family-friendly. It refers to a marital Aid that would be used by a female. Sorry but I checked the comments and I didn't see anyone explaining why they're called Steely Dan. Thank you, thumbs-up and have a nice day.
So gooooood
A few more fun ones from Steely Dan are Kid Charlemagne, Haitian Divorce and The Fez. I could name a whole lot more. Don't get me started! 😵💫
Nice. I miss this lady.
Detective music! 😂😂😂
Sit back and listen to the whole "Aja" album .
My favorite albumn !!!!
Steele Dan is really good and have several great albumns
Great reaction!!
By Far There Best Are.
👉 Do It Again 👈
👉 Reelin In The Years 👈
👉 dirty work 👈
My favorite is Black Cow.
Smooth! ❤!
You are going to love Dan.
Check out "If" by Bread some more smooth 70s for you
Hi Ms. Ashley, Steely Dan is a great band.. I bet U do not know how they named the group Steely Dan.. ♠W.G.
great - more steely dan...
This is the music we had. Created by actual musicians . Unlike the god awful product of today. I can't even call it music. Btw those glasses are 🔥🔥🔥
"Pretty fly for a white guy" (guys)
If you haven't done the song Aja, do yourself a favor and listen to it.
So Pure! 😽💋🎶💕
It's not a matter of hurting your ears. Earbuds just cannot sound near as good as headphones. No matter the hype from earbud makers, you're missing the true sound of the music.
Check out ( Babylon sisters ) by STEELY DAN. ...PLEASE!!! 😊
Make sure you listen to Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan too
All music wasn’t created to be danced to!! Some you put on, ride down the open road and LISTEN!!!!!! You’ll rock a lil, bop a lil and vibe the hold time!!!
Please watch Deep purple child in time 1970 live versión n Led Zeppelin since I've been loving you live and of course queen somebody to love. Ps try to pause less if you can...!
If you take a deep dive into the Steely Dan collection of albums.... Good luck finding a BAD Steely Dan song. THEY DID NOT MAKE ONE. All classics. Straight funk, jazz, yacht rock.......with a list of studio musicians that do not end. TECHNICIANS in the studio..... They hated to tour and do shows. They just wanted to make great music....
It's 1979 and this 30-something genteleman is trying to date a 19 year-old at the roller skating rink.
"detective music" ....."skate a little lower" that's her 'sign' ....but no reaction to Aretha Franklin lyric ...uh oh folks.
😂U tried 2🛬 a comment but instead🛰🤎🤭
I can't stand on-ear headphones. You need over-ear headphones. They rest on your head but don't touch your ears. I can wear them and forget they are on - and they make me feel like I'm AT the performance. Much more comfortable than buds & they sound much better... but whatever you do keep discovering good music.
Allegedly, the name "Steely Dan" came from a sex toy of the same name.🤣
Please, someone help! Im thinking that was Stevie Wonder with that amazing harmonica, but Wikipedia lists no harmonica player. I’m pretty sure that’s Stevie though.
That's not a harmonica and Stevie Wonder never played on a Steely Dan album.
Skate a little lower now… pretty sure that line sealed the deal for you. The lyrics are as catchy as the music. Cool vibe to this tune but pretty hard to have empathy for an aging frat boy trying to hook up with a 19 yr old by plying her with weed and tequila. Sounds like a recipe for date rape. You learn to not let some of the Dan’s disturbing subject matter and lowdown protagonists get in the way of a good song.
Skate a little lower now...
