A couple of notes to address frequent comments:
1. When I mentioned that this was the final iteration of the 3DS, I meant amongst the 3D models, but I accidentally cut those words out 😄🤦
2. The only way we personally can tell if a screen is IPS other than the "angle test" is just to compare it side by side to a TN screen and see the contrast/brightness/vibrance differences. But there are other resources out there to check your model.
3. I only cover the New 3DS XL model in this video, but some other models have been known to have IPS screens, especially after modifications 😀

My red N3DSXL didn't have an IPS screen, it had 2 TN screens originally. BUT I noticed that other 3DS' had better quality screens & figured out why, so I contacted Nintendo Support while it was still under warranty, told them my screen quality was subpar & that some games colors looked washed out, which was true. It could be the screen was defective.
Either way, they gave me a shipping label to send it in & they said, "There's a chance you'll just get another TN screen." but I left a note in the box & on the service site that said, "Please replace with IPS screen if possible." &, when it came back, it had a shiny new IPS screen on it & I was really happy. The main downside is my serial # no longer matches the box, but that's only a big deal for collector's editions.
In any case, the screen was a huge improvement & I had trouble seeing some games like Hyrule Warriors Legends on the TN screen before cause the colors were so washed out & greyish. Maybe the old screen really was defective. I was just happy to have the IPS screen now, tho.

3DS systems are under lifetime warranty. I sent mine in for lag issues last year :)

The prices for the IPS screens nowadays are super crazy. I did manage to get a used dual IPS one for around $160 with 6 random game cards included.

My SNES 3DS is one of my favorite handhelds of all time and having the Nintendo ambassador games on it means I’ve got a fantastic virtual console in my pocket that looks amazing. I felt so lucky to grab the last one from the shop I got it in.
I've never seen a SNES edition have dual IPS. I didn't even think that was possible.

My 3DS does not have an IPS screen, but my Gameboy Advance does.
Note that the IPS screens can be very dark in some games (Zelda OoT) and battery life is noticeably worse than the TN panels. They do look nice though.
I've owned various models of the N3DS XL, some with IPS displays and some with TN. I really think the IPS thing is overrated. A good calibrated TN display might be nicer than a poorly balanced IPS screen. The screen lottery was a more complex issue than merely IPS vs TN.
@@francois8561 it's 100% overrated, i've got 5 in my collection and the whole 'tilting' and 'better viewing angles' make it seem as if you're going to constantly playing your 3DS at bizarrely sharp angles, when obv you're not so it's a non-issue. plus the fact that the resolution and graphics aren't exactly ground breaking enough to warrant worrying about extras like better contrasts, it's a minimal difference in viewing quality, and like you said if the balace is off IPS can look horrible in comparison (two of my TN's look so much cleaner than one of my IPS in particular).
but everyone loves circlej*rking over their 'rare' IPS screens (protip: they really are not that rare) and from what i've seen is mostly a gimmicky buzzword to try and vastly inflate the price of the console when selling to people who don't know any better
Btw, the N3DSXL hyrule edition has a higher chance of having both upper and lower ips screens. I don’t know why, but that’s what people say.

Just recently got the Hyrule themed new 3ds XL, and it has dual ips screens. I love playing my games on it, and it feels like a huge upgrade from any 3ds I had prior.
I remember explaining this to a friend of mine a few years back and we put our 3DS side by side and he got so mad. It was actually kinda funny but he felt ripped off, playing on it was never the same for him lol.
It honestly is kind of a scum move from nintendo. Makes it so much harder to just go out and buy one and be proud of your new acquisition. Also very unfair in terms of picture quality and resale value, while paying the same. Luckily I got two mint CIB dual IPS N3DS XL ones for a regular low price, because as it turns out, they seem to be somewhat common where I live. I actually could have bought two more in my time searching for one, and bet I could find more today. In the US however, there are also dual IPS versions of the regular small N3DS, but only in limited numbers. Those weren't released here at all, so I'm just stuck without one, which bums me out as I like the small model better. They are in the pokemon anniversary bundles and a certain mario bundle (forgot which one), but only within a small range of serial numbers (YW07-YW10 or something simlar if I remember correctly). I almost imported an unopened bundle from the US for about 300, but ran out of funds. Nowadays they are extremely highly priced, unless you're willing to go for a worn incomplete used one.
@@JorisKeijser I actually own a dual ips small n3ds. It's magnificent, I don't know if they used a different epoxy or manufacturing technique but the screen has not yellowed in the 7 or so years that I owned it unlike my tn small n3ds. I went to so many stores with a dodgy scale asking to weight the device box and all trying to find it by weight (ips screen weight more) and got lucky at a Target I just happen to come across and had the scale in my car. And yes the clerks all thought I was nuts but none of them ever said no haha. Glad I went through the hassle, I love that 3ds. Also, I agree 100% with what you said, my lack of faith with Nintendo to not screw consumers over was the primary reason why I didn't buy a Switch in the first three years. I just assumed they'd do a hardware refresh. But they didn't so they kinda did manage to screw me over in a sense lol
@@HoopyAmero Oh wow, didn't know you could go by weight. And didn't know about the yellowing thing too. Nice story. So what does the serial number start with/what version is it? Also, would you say that when playing it straight on the difference is big? I kinda want to buy the small one, but only if it doesn't look too underwhelming under normal conditions. And yes, true about the trust thing and holding out on the switch, there actually were some definite colour temperature and maybe even brightness disrepancies in those as well. DS Lite has it too with mismatched colour temperatures top and bottom. And as an extra lottery, the 3DSes have different hinges as well. Some are nice and tight and snappy, some very loose with a wobbly screen. Mine are very wobbly, which makes it feel so much cheaper or like it's worn. Damn you Nintendo!
@Joris Keijser It was the one that came with the Mario and Mario Maker faceplates, I'll look up the serial in the morning remind me if you don't hear from me in a day or two, Happy to help but I forget things. As for difference while playing straight on, I honestly don't think it's that big of a deal/difference. Ips looks a lot better when comparing it side by side to a tn model but when you're playing and stuff is moving it really doesn't matter from my personal experience. I think the tn screen may even refresh faster according to a comparison video I watched a few years back. But yeah, straight on, not sure if the word is correct but the saturation is still a tad higher than ips but like running a blue light filter on your phone or monitor, a few minutes in and it you won't even notice it.
@@JorisKeijser Me again, I remembered and it's YW70. But you cannot go by serial number alone, it's a start but there are both TN and mismatched IPS/TN units as well. I theorize that the workers putting the units together just use whatever is given to them or pulled off the shelf and it's just luck that the person putting together the unit happens to have ips top and both screen at the same time. One last thing I tested the hinges on six 3DS while getting the serial number and they all have a little play. IIRC they redesigned the hinges after the DS Lite to have a little play to prevent cracking. I checked my DSi and it also has a little play but not as bad as the regular 3ds, N3ds, and N3ds xl. The Xl being the worst offender. It's not like they're flopping around but once they snap into position you can jiggle them around by a few millimeters, I didn't measure but something around 2mm-5mm? So a little play and flop is by design, but if you can fan yourself with the unit something's wrong XD
back in 2018 i was able to score that snes new nintendo 3ds for only $105!!
it was on amazon, brand new in box and it even came with a free download of the old school mario kart!! so happy i made that purchase☺️❤️

I liked my New 3DS, but the placement of the power button was the bane of my existence😂
It does allow you to turn the console on even if it's closed though
DS Lite could be powered with closed lid as well 👍
And the power button is exactly where you hold the console at the bottom and its the most sensetive button I have ever seen.. An eye lash can tickle that button and switch it off.. The amount of times I have pressed the power button, I have chucked it in my draw after 2 days of using it and thats where its lived since..
Hopefully we can get some aftermarket IPS screens soon!
Replacing the top screen on a 3DS is a royal PITA. I would not advise you to do it unless you're experienced (and even then it just sucks). Nothing like GB/GBC/GBA screen replacements.

I remember checking years ago when I first heard about this and confirmed too is IPS while bottom is TN but I'm totally cool with the top being the good display since that's the primary. Also I believe the IPS uses slightly less power, probably not enough to make a big difference but fun to know.
Actually it's the other way around. TN has better battery life and brightness. A brightness of 3 on TN is equal to a 5 on IPS. Only advantage IPS has is better viewing angles and colors.
I wasn't sure, so I used 3dsident to find out for sure - my top screen is IPS and my bottom screen is TN. I'll take it!

Haha yeah that's the physical big box from LRG, but I agree with you about the screens. Elisa says it's clear as day, but they all look great to me.
I lucked out by having the upper one to be IPS. The difference between the two screens is astronomical in terms of vibrance and angle.

I have a Regular New 3DS (Not an XL) that I believe has an IPS top screen and a TN bottom screen because it exhibits the clarity at all viewing angles like the IPS example in this video. Bonus points for it being a US Region Non-XL New 3DS, which is already pretty rare.

My snes variant has both of the good screens. Sniped it on Ebay for $200 came with cib pokemon white 2, soul silver, heartgold, loose black and black 2 some zelda game. Sold all the games for $700+ and kept the snes variant for my snes collection(:

My local CM Games has a SNES 3DS XL but is super expensive being new in the box.
My red Monster Hunter 3DS LL has bottom IPS screen, but my gold Hyrule edition has dual IPS, which was the first 3DS I bought (for $120CAD) and didn't even know about the different LCD types at the time.
I just bought a New Nintendo 3DS LL (the Japanese version of the XL) and it has a top IPS screen. I assumed someone had modded it, I didn't realize it was a standard feature towards the end of the life cycle.

my N3DSXL has the IPS screens (which are still LCDs, only the switch OLED skips the liquid crystal layer). compared to my standard 3DS the picture is just so much more comfortable
My main I use daily is a red new 3DS xl. I also have a fire emblem new 3DS xl sitting on my shelf. I came across this short and I had an itch to open the fire emblem to compare to my red one.
I wasn’t expecting much luck from either and placed them side by side on max brightness in the dark. My red one has TN panels on both screens and was shocked to see my fire emblem unit to have dual IPS.
The viewing angles were a night and day difference side by side. The TN panels looked nice viewing at it head on and washed out from the sides while the IPS panels looked crisp and consistent at all viewing angles.
In conclusion, It’s a nice find after all these years to have dual IPS on my fire emblem unit, but it’s going back on my shelf. 😂

I have a New 3DS XL upper IPS and New 3DS non XL (one of the black friday best buy christmas units) that's dual IPS. Big difference!
It's interesting that IPS and TN screens have such a clear quality difference next to each other. But barely anyone noticed that some 3DS screens were better.
Back in 2015 me and my older brother got New 3ds XLs to play omega ruby and alpha sapphire. A bit later I saw a video about the screens and realized I had a bottom IPS and he had a Top IPS. I once tried to swap them in secret but the issue was mine was red and his was black and it didnt work out in my favor.

I actually did have the SNES N3DSXL from late 2018 up until 2021 when the top screen broke, initially was going to get fixed then and there but family issues arose during that time, thus never got fixed.
I still have it though but I’ve been thinking of shell swapping it with my current 3DS I have to restore it in someway.

If I remember correctly TN screens use less power than IPS screens, so if you didn't get the IPS screens at least you have better battery life to compensate

I have a 3DS with an upper IPS screen, it looks pretty nice but the TN bottom screen isn't bad either, I think an IPS screen has more benefit on the top screen anyway
I think I have a top ips screen because I can see it at more of an angle than the bottom.

I have body armor protection and a glass screen protector on my US Fire Emblem fates with dual IPS/LCD screens. Very rare of its kind with this type of screen. Very beautiful Display

I just bought that snes version unopened for $1000. I did open it and to my surprise it has two IPS screens. My older model that I actually game on also has 2. I ordered a backup that has 1 IPS on top and TN on the bottom but I really don’t care what either screen has. It’s not too difficult to replace them anyways from what I’ve heard
the only problem ofc is that the IPS screen does drain the battery faster
Man am I glad I got that version of the 3DS. I’m a big fan of retro gaming so I thought that it would be a nice version to get, but I didn’t realize that this was a nice part of owning this version.

Yeah, it is an interesting fact but I actually learned this awhile ago while either shopping for one a few years ago or through a 3ds reddit post this year. It's still nice to help make this knowledge both more well known and widespread to a broader yet newer audience.
Got one the first day it came out. Both screens were IPS. Not sure if it was more common for the first batch.

I got a blue new 3ds xl with a top screen ips for £60 and the only issue with it is it has a cracked top plastic back but it doesn't effect the device at all
Have a top IPS the same SNES version in this video. Local shop only had top ips last time I went in. I plan to go one more time and buy a backup with at least top ips and download all the stuff i want from the eshop before it shuts down and then put it in storage somewhere sealed.

I built my own Dual IPS 3ds XL..i swapped the top IPS Screen from one new 3ds xl to a 3ds xl with a bottom IPS Screen.
It upsets me so much that nintendo did this. I bought a refurbished 3ds xl a long time ago thinking I was good to go for the future just for nintendo to not only release a new 3ds xl after, but randomly package much more valuable dual ips new 3ds xl’s in the same packaging as any other new 3ds xl. Very frustrating as the consumer and now as a collector, we all must pay the price to own one. 😢
