thanks for the overview here! not a lot of videos on this flash. curious: how did it do on t he H+ (fastest) frame rate? seems like a very capable flash, guessing if you put the power down to like 1/200-1/500 it would be able to keep up, super intrigued now! feel like this would enable some really creative shots

Hi, thank you for the comment . Please check at 14:23, I did try the high speed, and it I think it fired on all frames. But the battery is new and fully charged.

The Canon EL-1 has ATG's features that many pros need and use. Now, many pros are upset that they must buy an adapter.
The Canon EL-5, EL-10, 580EX and below are made for beginners & amateurs. Having no ATG's features like ATG's Godox flashes
As a hobbyist, the EL-5 meets and even exceeds all my needs, but I understand those who accumulated the 5 pin flash, having spent a lot of money on them. Canon could have made it a hybrid, but it's business. They need to push consumers on the new platform to make new sales.
You could use a Godox flash, for example the v850, but could it be used in S1 or S2 mode to detect the flash of the camera's built-in flash?
I only have the Godox TT685II-C, and I haven't tried to use it as an optical slave nor do I think it can be used as one. Perhaps one of our viewers has tried it? I would also be interested to know how you made it work.

No, the Canon R50 uses the LC-E17 charger. The EL-5 uses the LC-E6 charger, which is much larger.
Canon removed the center pin from the SL3 (250d) In order to block third party flashes, but some flash were working with it. Now they removed everything from the R50. This is just annoying because they want you to buy expensive flash from them 😢.
I hear you. The multi-function shoe has its benefits, but if you already have existing flashes with the five pin, you're out of luck unless you buy an adapter. Even with the adapter, you lose the ability to use the AF assist beam with a mirrorless setup.

Can you tell me if the rising rubber platform moves when you press it with your finger (when the flash is removed)?
Is the flash in the hot shoe completely stationary or can it move slightly from side to side when pressed firmly?

Yes, you turn it halfway in one direction to lock and the other direction to unlock.
Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it. But I am referring to the rubber pad that is lowered and raised by the lock mechanism. Does it move when you press on it (when the flash is not on the camera)?
Just on my copy it moves and I want to understand if it's normal.
@user-tj5fg4nc8v Yes, it's supposed to. That's how it locks the flash to the hot shoe.
Do you ever use it externally? It's got a radio in it, and your camera has radio control. What I'm not clear on is if the camera's radio control implies Canon's external radio transmitter isn't needed. Thanks.
I don't see that capability with Canon R50. I also wish I had good news for you, but I can't get my Godox trigger to work with EL-5. There's a new trigger called Canon ST-E10 for EL-1 and EL-5, but I haven't tried it yet.
Thanks, I've since confirmed from Canon that these new bodies don't have radio transmitters in them, despite having capability to control radio speedlites. You do need Canon's transmitter, and no it won't work with other brands such as Godox. If needing to still use external triggers I'm better off not buying any of the more expensive Canon solutions.
@thenexthobby I have the older Godox X Pro C and X1R-C, these transmitter works with the AD-E1 mounted on the R50 to control either my Canon 430EXII or the Godox TT685II-C.
But to your point, Canon flashes do cost more.

No, and I don't really find those useful. I bought a softbox instead.

Hi, in my case I had issues with the Godox TT685II-C with the AD-E1 adapter. Not sure if it's my copy of the flash or the adapter, but having experience that I would just buy the EL-5. It's direct and this is more powerfull from what I see.

With the EL-5, I find that it's difficult to find a charger for it. I bought a generic LP-E6 charger but the battery does not fit well due to its construction. I was able to carve a few mm off the charger without damaging it and that's the only way the battery which is huge was able to fit. Other than that, no issue at all.
The new EL-10 is 250 while this model is 299. The 10 uses double AA batteries and is the replacement for the 430. This flash just seem big for a R50
@game2572 You're right, R50 is so compact that most flash would dwarf it. Having said that, I've also gotten used to the EL-5 that I'm no longer bothered by the size. My smaller flashes just don't cut it.

I have the Canon 600EX II-RT which I used with my Canon T3i. Today I use a Canon R6 Mark II to continue using my Canon flash. If I were to use Canon's entry-level APS-C, I would prefer the Canon R10 to continue using my 600EX II-RT. I would never buy the R50 and have to spend money on another flash. I will never play Canon's game.
I hear you, I have the same love and hate relationship with Canon. I can say I still like my R50. I wasn't happy I had to buy another flash, but the el-5 didn't disappoint.

Seriously, a quick look at the prices of Canon cameras and lenses in the Philippines made me scratch my head on why Canon priced their products higher than here in Canada.
Yeah I’ve been checking prices for the AD-E1 and I think the one in Canada is the most expensive. But if you are not using it anymore. I’m here to take care of it. Lol.

I had no clue this was an option! I just received my ad e1 adapter and im having trouble syncing my camera with the yongnuo speedlite..do you know if its possible to use?

As a hobbyist, I agree, and Canon products have always been more expensive than 3rd party like Godox. While I'm starting to like Godox, I still prefer the reliability of Canon products, and I don't have to deal with compatibility issues.

@lilmoldavite I hear you, it is expensive hobby. I did try the AD-E1 adapter so I can use my existing speedlite and Godox, and they do work, but I ran into issues where they would cause the R50 to shut down or malfunction. With the EL-5, 0 issues. Either that or I buy a $3,000 2.8 RF glass...

@game2572 One thing about technology, they're never a good investment unless one is making a living out of it. I guess I accepted that a long time ago when I got hooked with DSLRs as a hobby.

I hear you about the battery, the unit does consume a lot of power that's why they had to make the battery bigger than the standard LP-E6. And it's crazy that Canon did not provide a charger because it's not easy to find a compatible LC-E6 charger due to the large battery design.
