Hello Amie [ @Amiekinz4ever ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wembley Arena in 2015, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an wild audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

@@Amiekinz4ever And I thank you for your enthusiastic reaction! Today you opened the doors to a real musical universe of Nightwish of incredible stylistic diversity, which has portals to other and other universes, of the bands in which almost every one of the musicians you saw today were in the past, as well as their individual projects and collaborations with other bands.
Please consider the song lists I promote as a resource of performances recorded in good audio and video quality, which you can access at any time. The order is not important, and often the suggestions of other fans will be more appropriate, so do not consider it something mandatory.
I took a look at your list of reactions and I can predict that you will enjoy listening to Nightwish, because the European component is not yet well represented there. In the hope that you will continue to explore, you have a new subscriber here.

Nightwish are certainly a cut above most bands and amazing live. The Greatest Show on Earth is spectacular in its complexity, its seamless fitting of Dawkins and Darwin lines into the song and the entertainment value of the sychronised backing video... I rate them as high as Therion, the band that drew me into Symphonic Metal back in 1998.
I hope Nightwish perform one day with a full orchestra and choirs, which Therion have done a few times, for example look up Therion performing Via Nocturna with the Miskolc Orchestra... imagine Nightwish doing similar...

The title of the issue is taken from a 2009 book by evolutionary biologist and atheist writer Richard Dawkins, about the evidence for biological evolution. Dawkins also contributes to the album. Holopainen explained to HMV in March 2015: "I wrote him a letter a little over a year ago and explained what ideas we had for this album, mainly about evolution. Since one of the songs goes straight to one of his books, it felt like a perfect match to try and recite him on the album. A few weeks later, he sent me an email accepting the invitation."
"Later in 2014, we recorded his parts at Hats Off Studios, Oxford. This is a huge honour for us, as Dawkins is one of our greatest heroes and his writings have been a huge inspiration for the album."

I’ll add a few details to this. LUCA means the Last Universal Common Ancestor, the ancestor of all living species. The Goldilocks Zone is the place in space, not too far from the sun, not too close either, where life can develop, just like it did for the Earth. Lucy is of course the Afariensis which was long believed to be our ancestor (now replaced by Toumai). The
God of the Gap. The Gap is what the humans don’t understand and so have to find a "rational" explanation, hence God(s). Richard Dawkins is a renowned scientist and also an Atheist who belongs to the Neo Darwinism current. The last quote on stage is from Darwin himself.

Welcome to the Nightwish Army - you're among friends, and you're about to embark on a fantastic journey. Every musician in this outfit is world-class. And you haven't heard all of them. Tuomas Holopainen is arguably the best composer of this era. Some call him the Metal Mozart, but he is beyond that - you can hear the influences of Sibelius, Nielsen, Karl Orff and Ralph Vaughn Williams in his work. Tuomas is above all else a poet. He is a very learned man and he has a fierce thirst for acquiring comprehension.
Both Tuomas and Floor have said that they are "high sensitives". I believe that they are in fact empaths, and that is not an easy existence for anyone so cursed and blessed. You feel the best and the worst of everything from everyone unless you develop a strong enough filter to allow you to survive day to day. This is one of the things that make Tuomas' compositions so hard-hitting, so epic. Tuomas feels so deeply of the things of this world, and this world has not always been kind to him. His genius and his art is that he can share his experiences with us.
Now Floor - Floor is a world-class, high function, full duplex empath - in other words, she sends AND receives. THAT's how she sings her self, her heart and her soul right into ours, and she does it whether it's a live performance or not. This is her super power. The audience is hers every time she performs. If she does not make you cry, if she does not give you chills and goosebumps, then you have no soul. Floor and Nightwish light you up in the best possible way. Few others do, and it's obvious.
"We were here" will, in some aeons hence, humanity having long passed into oblivion or transcendence, be inscribed on the doors to the entrance to the Last Library of Man. Underneath it will also be inscribed "Forget nothing"

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after the iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on CZcams. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered CZcams in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

I think this song is a great way to display the unfathomable time life has existed compared to our own time here and even the time humanity has been here. Life has been on earth for a very long time. It was beautiful before we came, it is beautiful now, and life will be beautiful when we go extinct or change beyond recognision whenever that happens. Today it is our time to praise being alive, but we should remember everything changes. Relax your body and just appreciate being here instead of putting all your energy into control of it.

The sound is typically European and these bands struggle in the USA. They now seem to have established themselves in the album charts, but not in the upper range.
Richard Dawkins is an evolutionary biologist, the song is about his book on evolution. Their current single deals with generations:
Nightwish - Perfume Of The Timeless (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
This song is the longest that they play live. The background music when bowing is part of the song.
There is no alcohol ban on stage, but they know their limits. They pushed the first bassist out of the band because he was drunk on stage several times and could no longer play. His successor was the singing bassist Marko Hietala, who cheers the audience on at the end. Unfortunately he left the band in 2021. Currently he gives us hope that he will return. Until then, he's currently touring with the first singer of Nightwish and playing prog metal:
MARKO HIETALA - Left On Mars (feat. Tarja Turunen) (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
Comparing singer Floor Jansen with various singers is a good idea. She has always placed great value on versatility and always has an ace up her sleeve. The guys don't reach as high as her, but they harmonize well. The singing isn't quite operatic because the vibrato is (intentionally) too weak. She has training in classical singing, but this would be opera, from the first singer of Nightwish:
NIGHTWISH - The Phantom Of The Opera (OFFICIAL LIVE)
Keyboard player and mastermind Tuomas Holpainen always takes you on a rollercoaster. The sudden twists are typical.
And no, you won't be seeing them live any time soon. They're releasing a new album in September, but they won't be touring. They postponed that indefinitely. But they also extended their record contract.

@@Amiekinz4ever The pandemic has messed up their rhythm. They have side projects going on. You might see Floor with her solo program, where she is currently giving concerts:
Floor Jansen - Sweet Curse (ft. Henk Poort) (Live)
Drummer Kai might do something with Wimtersun again and tour the upcoming album, together with current bassist Jukka:
Wintersun - Time (TIME I Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios) REMASTER
I don't know anything about mastermind Tuomas, but he should bring his and multi-instrumentalist Troy's studio project live after two albums:
AURI - The Space Between (OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO)
And someone has to persuade bassist Marko to return to Nightwish. He left the band as bassist and singer during the pandemic after 20 years, leaving a gap. The chances are actually good. He is currently touring solo:
MARKO HIETALA - Left On Mars (feat. Tarja Turunen) (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)

@@Amiekinz4ever There is no official press release about the "why" of their touring hiatus, but I suspect it had to do with the uncertain period of contract negotiations with Nuclear Blast Records. A Nightwish world tour is always massive, covering dozens of countries and hundreds of venues and spanning more than a year's time. That's got to be horrendously expensive requiring financial backing from a record label to pre-fund it in hopes of making back the money in later ticket sales. I'm sure that was the driving force behind the decision.
But, also, those tours must be physically exhausting as well. They aren't getting any younger and all deserve a good rest. Dutch Valkyrie Goddess, Floor Jansen, is the youngest member at 43 and just gave birth to her second child. I'm sure she wants to spend time at home on her vast ranch/farm with her children, husband, horses, dogs, and cats! Meanwhile British multi-instrumentalist, Troy Donockley (the guy who plays the flutes, whistles, bagpipes, ebow guitar, etc.), just turned 60 a few days ago.
Unfortunately, for now, we have to just enjoy their talent via media. I'm just glad I got to meet them and shake hands in Miami during the 2018 tour! I would be really mad at myself now if I had hesitated in clicking that "buy the more expensive VIP tickets!!

This was Richard Dawkins at the end, a biologist who wrote the book "The Greates Show on Earth" = The Evolution. And he is reciting Darwin at the end.
The lyrics are full of metaphores, f.e "The cosmic law of gravity, Pulled the newborns around a fire, A careless cold infinity in every vast direction, Lonely farer in the Goldilocks zone, She has a tale to tell" which are the new planets after the big bang gather around the sun, the lonely farer is the earth of course.
