Convert Your Fresnel to LED with VisionSmith ReLamp: NAB 2016

  • At NAB 2016, we talked with Pete Smith at VisionSmith for an overview of their new ReLamp LED bulbs. With these, you can convert your old Arri or Mole-Richardson tungsten fresnel lights to LED at a fraction of the price of most of the current fresnel LED instruments on the market. Your fresnel still focuses just like with the halogen bulbs and the CRI for the daylight balanced bulb is 93, and for the tungsten balanced bulb is 98.
    Special thanks to Scott Vanderbilt who was kind enough to bring his brand new Sony FS5 camera to film this series. He used this opportunity to learn his camera, so please understand that he did us a huge favor and also learned when auto focus would work or not work. :)

      +Curtis Judd I'd love to see a review of how it goes. Those upgrades are probably a few paydays back in the budget right now, so I would love to see what you think. I have a 650 and a 300 I would love to do that to. Wish they made one for a 150! Would make a great LED rim light or hair light.

      +Curtis Judd I wonder what the power draw is on those as well. If I could snip the original power cords and DIY a D-tap connector on there and run them on battery, that would be amazing. Maybe they should look into adding a modified power base for it with V-mount or Gold mount or AC power.

    Hi CJ,
    I was initially intrigued by these Relamp products as I have Arri 1K. I wonder if you've heard any longer term takes on them?
    I want to invest in a punchy source Daylight, and as you know there are more and more affordable LED 1k fresnels. Not sure way to go. Thanks for your take, and your vids.

    i love the concept. But for me personally with the new aputure lights coming out I'd rather get a new LED fresnel from them and still be able to use the old tungsten fresnel lights and have two.

  • @MOWFWDU
    @MOWFWDU Před 8 lety +1

    Thanks for this Curtiss, it's amazing! Two thoughts, 1) You did not discuss the dimming - the website says you can use a conventional dimmer, I wonder how well this works - did you find out if CRI suffers or color temp changes? 2) Seems I could make an extremely lightweight soft light with a chimera and a little ingenuity with this, amazing that the power supply is build into that small lamp module!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  Před 8 lety

      +Gregory David Yes, they had a dimmer on the floor and it works great. I did not confirm this but to my eye it did not appear that the color temperature changed when dimmed.

      @curtisjudd  Před 8 lety

    • @IndiDSLR
      @IndiDSLR Před 8 lety

      I sent an email to Visionsmith asking about this and Pete replied. It has to do with the heat being pulled off by the fan being trapped by the reflector and therefore hurting the performance of the led.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  Před 8 lety

      Ah, ok, that makes sense. After we shot this I had a chat with their engineer who worked on the cooling circuitry. From the sounds of it, there was a fair bit of engineering that went into the design of the cooling system.

  • @WereInATightSpot
    @WereInATightSpot Před 8 lety

    I'd be curious to see a face off between these in an Arri or Mole and an Aputure light, specifically the new COB 120 with a fresnel lens.
    Also, if you gelled the Tungsten (98 CRI) with CTB, would you still have more accurate color than the Daylight LED (93 CRI)?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  Před 8 lety +1

      +ColinGW Me too! I'm going to see about getting one of the relamp units for my Arri 650. I'm not sure whether gelling the tungsten balanced LED would do better than the daylight balanced, but its a good question.

    • @IndiDSLR
      @IndiDSLR Před 8 lety

      +Curtis Judd I'm more curious to see the reverse, since using gels to convert tungsten to daylight is less efficient than geling daylight to tungsten. I'm interested to see the comparisons either way, though!

    What do you think about the light of arri light m40 Head (blue-silver) ?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  Před 7 lety

      I think that all of the Arri lighting instruments are great, but for the M40, you had better have a heavy duty circuit to support it. 4000w is a lot of power.

    • @tmp_sa
      @tmp_sa Před 7 lety

      Do you mean it is the best lighting for 4000W?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  Před 7 lety

      +qomrr fiedraly hi qomrr, I have never shot with a 4K light and never used the m40 so I cannot say. But there is also no such thing as "the best light" as each is better suited for different things and people have differing opinions. What I can say is that the M40 is made by Arri and I have had very good experiences with their products. Also, a 4000 watt light is very powerful and requires a lot of electricity so if you are planning to use one, make sure the electrical circuit you plan to use can support a light that powerful. Best wishes!

      +Hugh Sweeney $500 for the 650, but totally understand. I was hoping for a little less as well but if the color is as good as Pete indicated, still cheaper than most other good quality LED fresnels.

    • @HuFilms
      @HuFilms Před 8 lety +2

      It's listed at $595 for the 650 version on their website. I clicked through to the 'buy it' section. The ARRI 650 fresnel is selling at $444 on B&H photo. I don't doubt that its a great product but at $150 more than an ARRI light itself it just puts me off.

      I'm not quite handy enough to do that myself since it will also require a cooling circuit and fan but perhaps someone with more electronics DIY experience could do it. For those of us less skilled in that area, this is an interesting option.

      praestant8 well I can tell you that two years later, yes now I have a good idea, took me some time don't get me wrong, but I learn how to design a case in fusion 360 and 3d print a case that looks really close to an aputure 120d, i'm using the fuji led, and now I have a 100w led with a functional dimmer and 95+ cri and using it for commercial work :) now for the next versión of the design i will use and Arduino to control it wireless.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  Před 8 lety +3

      +paulthelefty Definitely $995. The technology to produce color and light intensity like this takes quite a lot of investment. Note that's the price for the 2k which is a LOT of light for a single light instrument. The main thing that interested me about these is that I've got an old Arri and converting it to LED for $495 with good CRI is a pretty good deal. You can't find another good fresnel LED light for that price.
