    A lot of you seem to be missing the point. He's talking about making movies for the love of making movies. He's not talking about making movies in order to become rich and famous. I wonder if many of you actually love making movies more than you love the idea of being recognized.

      There’s video of Ron Howard in high school doing just that. I saw a video of him making a little western back then with what had to be an 8mm home movie camera and one of the players was his high school girlfriend who later became his wife.

    Just make movies! Don't worry about whether it might be good or bad, just keep doing it and you will learn and improve each time you do it. I tell the same thing to people who want to make games. They ask "How do I get hired at a game company?" The answer is "First, make some games." Don't worry if your work isn't professional quality and good enough to get you hired ... just keep doing it and you will gain the experience you need. So many people put the cart before the horse and think that they need money and equipment to succeed. Don't worry about success. Just start doing it first and worry about success later. One step at a time - you have to learn to crawl before you can walk, before you can run.

      In being a newbie at something, plain experience doesn't quite work, you kinda first need to know some stuff beforehand as well as during the process.

    There is still a huge leap between making a blockbuster film and a youtube video of which there are millions out there. I get his point that the digital world has made things easier for filmmakers but just because the tools are there doesn't mean it's enough: talent, money, time, effort and let's face it, also luck, all have to be involved in order for any filmmaker to succeed, whether it's through the internet or not.

  • @johnnyroc
    @johnnyroc Před 4 lety +46

    This couldn't be further from the truth. It's much harder now after the digital revolution because back then all you had to do was make a film. Industry would check it out. Even in the 90s films like Rodriguez's mariachi launched careers. The hardest part was finding the money and Spielberg could borrow it from his parents. These days, sure you can shoot something with your phone and post it on youtube but so can 40 million other people. You'll just get drowned by the noise. You can study the social media algorithms or play the film festival politics but without a doubt it's much much harder to make it now and just requires a lot more work.

    • @aliensoup2420
      @aliensoup2420 Před 4 lety +15

      He is correct from a purely technical standpoint, but I was going to make the same point you did. It is way easier and less expensive now to make a movie, but everybody else is doing it too. So yes, today it is much harder to get recognition. I got out of film-school in 1979, so I was just at the end of the film era before portable video took over. I could have made an independent 16mm film, but moved to Hollywood instead to look for work. There wasn't much competition then, but now everybody and their dog is an independent filmmaker/animator/vfx wiz. Basically, in the past you struggled in the front during production, but today you struggle in the back end for an audience and recognition.

    • @youmatgle
      @youmatgle Před rokem +2

      You have to go get your own 1.5M$, or have everyone involved to work for peenuts. You struggle with clients that want your product for as cheap as possible, with expensive equipment getting obsolete fast. Movie theaters are dying and Netflix is stealing the show. I've done stuff that I'm proud of, feel talented for the achievement, but the reality is that I have to pay for the bills. And when I'm seeing beautiful film being replaced with ugly HDR digital content, with nobody caring, I feel like I'm not missing anything. Cinema is an invention from (and for) another century. Just go ask Martin Scorcese or Frank Darabont about what they think of the industry nowadays. Moving on escape room.

      He is not talking about making it into Hollywood, he's talking about doing it for the self expression, like i do with my channel, for example. Not every youtube filmmaker is trying hard to make it big in the industry, most of us have our jobs and we pursue filmmaking as a spare time thing, just for the thrill of doing it. Like some people enjoy painting, but are not trying to be the next Picasso, same with a lot of people who enjoy playing instruments but aren't trying to make it big in the music industry, same happens with plenty of filmmakers.

    The demand for becoming director today is incredibly high. The lack of materials before is certainly a fact, BUT, who wanted to become director ? Fewer people. When you wanted to make a movie, you made your movie - it was very hard but with motivation you could did it - and then you had a very rare object to show to festivals and producers.
    Nowadays... It's.... Lol.... Impossible. Since everyone can make a feature film, the probabilty to find a distributor is almost zero.
