On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-20-15.
We’re looking at a 1970 Chevrolet Chevy Chevelle SS 454 LS6 engine, ALL original and unrestored with only 4305 original miles on the car. Today we start up the engine and discuss details.
The car's Owner is David Beem. David’s heard rumors of “The Urban Legend” unrestored low mileage Chevelle SS 454 with a LS6 motor that was sitting since the 1970’s, but No one had seen the car. However….one day he was introduced to Cory Peterson (who’s in the video), the Salesman of the “Rumored Car” and Cory knew where the car was stored, and was kind enough to share it with David. And as the story is told, here is the “Rumored Car”.

"Survivor" doesn't do this Chevelle justice. Definitely the most pristine unrestored car have ever seen in person that was not in a museum. Great car Dave.
+B Greenard I think this car was bought and put in a soft blanket :-) Lou
there’s a 67 corvette I saw a few years back on Barrett Jackson that was a bit better ... if that’s even possible
praise the fake L.S. car it is just a ss they are lying about the car , L.S. never built a Big block and they look nothing like a bb chevy
I don't know what banana boat you fell off of ..a ls6 is a big block and yes it is a true ss if you don't know what your talking about don't comment or just don't click on the site
I know a few people who would pay quite a large sum of money to own this piece of muscle car history (with that mileage. Unbelievable!! Because it’s all original with low miles, this is one of The Best cars I’ve viewed on your program. Thx again Lou!
Hi Brady Dog, High praise for this car :-) My pleasure sharing this one with you, and you're welcome, Lou
When I was a kid our neighbor bought one just like this brand new for use as a family car. Between the payments, the cost of insurance and the amount of gas it burned combined with the temptation to use the 450 horsepower, they didn’t have it long. I remember riding in it. At the time nothing was faster.
Hi Dave, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your neighbors car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I don't think I would have started the engine without first changing all fluids. Oil breaks down after years of sitting, much to valuable a car to chance doing damage to this beauty. Very happy for you, it's a beautiful piece of history, good luck with it.
Hi Joseph M, Glad you enjoyed this "beautiful piece of history" :-) Hope you see many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou

That is just mind blowing that the car hasn't been driven since 73 ... I would have been so tempted to drive it from time to time over the years if I owned it... I always thought that all SS CHEVELLES came with the stripes on the hood and trunk...
Hi Mike, Happy to share this car with you :-) I like driving them, so I would have driven it, Lou

i paid my neighbor $600 for a black on black 69 chevelle SS, bench seat, factory 3 speed in 1976. it was smoking bad and fouling plugs, so me and my buddy pulled the heads, had a valve job done on them, the valve seals were crumbling, put the heads back on, pulled into the street and smoked the tires for a city block. back in the 70's you could buy anything that is gold now, engines blown, trans ripped out, parts were plentiful, only if i would have known.

Doesn't get any better than this Chevelle,a time capsule.
Hi Darrin, High praise :-) Lou
That was my first car. Except mine was a 396, boy does that bring back memories. All black no stripes, no cowl hood, 4 speed bench seat. As someone already pointed out
the door panels said malibu mine were SS also no tach or clock. They don' show it well but the front seat looked funny to me, mine was all vinyl this one looked like it had cloth in it.
Notice the exhaust manifolds and water pump hoses still had orange paint on them. It looked like the posi rear end sticker in the trunk was gone. Nice car.

I can attest to a car looking good and not being washed for years. Although ive not seen one that hasnt been whashed in literally decades, my grandfather had a 57 chevy that he had bought new and it was garage kept from day one and it was years without a washjob, and on the rare occasion that it was driven, the cover came off and out of the garage she rolled and it looked great. This car also came with clear plastic seat covers from the dealer. From what ive read a lot of people ordered these seat covers back then from places like Fingerhut, but my grandfathers 57 came with the covers already on the seats which by the way were still on there when he sold the car.
Great video as usual Lou, and great car.
I bet Patrick Glenn Nichols would love to go over that chevelle with his expertise.

Thank You , Lou, Avery bad boy! In 1969 my dad bought Mercedes Benz's. Three MB's in six weeks! The MB 300SEL 6.3 had just been introduced, same as a American car. Medium size car with big V8, high horsepower and torque! Unfortunately not the car my dad bought! Dad bought basically same car, but with the inline fuel injected six, the car had been designed for originally? Dad tried the 6.3 but thought it was way too much power. In 1972 my dad bought my sister and I a BMW 3.0 liter Bavaria. 0 to 60 in six seconds, I was Happy! I never knew American car manufacturers were build road rockets for a lot less MONEY. Sorry for running on, but you must be getting use to me by now? Very HappY THIS CAR WILL BE PRESERVED! Peter Brooks.
Hi Peter Brooks, Thank you for viewing, sharing, and adding to the story with your family's cars too. You're welcome, Lou
y u thanking him for showing u a fake L.S, car and telling u it is real
NO Stripes, gauges, tach, or cowl hood with 4 spd and cloth bench seat is whats shocking........Has to be one of one!!
Hi Mrrat1, Those are good points, thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Yes, as Corey explained in the beginning, it was ordered just for the engine, originally to put in a gasser.
Bench seats were standard in all of these cars. Black is the rarest of all colors. 19 19
Are they cloth or all vinyl? Low option kinda backs up the story of ordering it for the motor. Is it the original motor, or did he use the LS6 in the Gasser and put a low hp motor back in it. Very carefully. Beautiful car! Set up like a Chevy Road Runner, as in all go with no luxury options except power brakes. I love it. Thanks for posting it Lou.
That means it is real rare!! A stripped down SS really rare!!
Excellent 👌

I have known about Doug's car since the late seventies, I grew up near the car and went to Bolton elementary. We would always look at the garage where the car was parked and knew that there was something special behind those doors. The car was talked about often in our neighborhood. From what I understood about the car, Doug bought it new from Price Chevrolet in Bountiful,Utah. Doug put a diamond tuck interior in the car and saved all the original seat covers. I heard a rumor that Doug took the car to Salt Lake City car show and the car was judged as not having factory paint, apparently the car was shot during transport and damaged the roof and required body work. These are some of the stories that surrounded this car.
What a fantastic car!
Glad you like this car. Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge on this car, Lou
I talked to some friends today about the car, Doug had Ladder bars and American racing wheels on it, as well as some sort of tube aftermarket cross member. The mileage on this car is 100% accurate. You are lucky to have it Lou!
As for as the engine goes, Doug wanted a aluminum 427 ZL-1 but it was not available for 1970,so Doug just ordered the biggest horsepower engine available and it just happened to come in the Chevelle.
I would love to own it ( who wouldn't ? ), however it's Dave's car, not mine, I the Guy who's videoing to share the story on this car. Lou
so u know this guy with the fake car first thing it has no ls engine in it has no teck so it is not ss car u mit want to tell him ls never built a big block in history what he has is the 454 ho engine witch came in the 70 chevelle ss not in the ls the 70 chevelle ss l.s. 454 small block is the rare car and the holy grail is the chevelle ss l.s. 7 427 small block those are the only engines they put in the ls car . these guys have no idea what a ls engine looks like tell the guy to go to ls web sight and read up on the 70 chevelle and look at the ls engine they only build one block for all just like a pontiac

Check out Muscle Car of the Week. The Brothers collection has a red LS6 with under 50 miles on it. These cars are only original once. They are great tools for people restoring cars to see how they left the factory. I would prefer something I can drive also. But appreciate these time capsules back to another era. I would have been riding the school bus passing cars like these and your eyes would go right to them. Just think what you could have bought in the late seventies as these cars were not considered more than a used vehicle. I need a time machine.
Hi David Davis, Thank you for viewing, sharing, and I hope you're behind the wheel of your time machine soon, Lou
if it has a big block chevy it is no LS car
What drives me crazy is if you're going to buy one and keep it for 50 years get one with more options. I can live with no AC but dummy lights!. Still a beautiful car. At this point there's no point in driving it just loses value. I rather have a clone I could drive the piss out off.

Guy owns a body shop and couldn't even get the swirls out of the paint before showing it off... Great car, but at the same time such a waste, spent decades up on jackstands under blankets...DRIVE the damn thing, thats what it was built for!
HI Andrew C, It's clear you like driving them, and I do too, however this ones "special" because it's a survivor. Anyway, there are many cars on the Channel and I hope you find many you like, Lou
The original owner did the right thing, he saved it. Unknown his initial plans once purchased but at this point, an unrestored original authentic SS would be valued very close to the 100k mark. Why? It's all original assembly line parts...no replacements from the local parts house.
No doubt, it's a waste to lock a car away in a room when the car was built to be driven! The Chevrolet Chevelle is my favorite car.

Miles are going up, now he is in his seventies and drives it to local car shows. Black with black vinyl roof and white racing stripes! Beautiful original paint!

Lou Costabile this was treated like a baby its whole life!
A good car candidate for a "My Car Story with Lou" for sure :-)
Lou Costabile It would be one of the best! He originally bought a new ss396 cause i think he didn't have quite enough money to get the ls6, but don't quote me on that part of the story but he only had the ss396 for a short time before it was stolen from in front of house! Then with the insurance money from the ss 396 he got the ls6. If your ever in the Pittsburgh Pa area hit me up and i might be able to set something up! Hopefully my daughter, which is his grandaughter will end up with the car someday! The car is mint, unmolested, and beautiful original! Thanks for responding to my comments!

Curious,I read the VIN# as a 136==== which would be a non-Super Sport Car,#138 would be a True SS Car,Is this correct? Thx Lou
+irishpat64 HI IrishPat64, Not sure. Maybe our Viewers can share knowledge on this question? Take care, Lou
No 136 is the correct VIN for the SS. The problem is that even with the VIN numbers from 1970 up a person really could not tell just what the car is, a Malibu or an SS! Which is why some people are fooled in thinking they bought an SS but really was a clone! Got a feeling this on is for real as they seem to have documentation like a build sheet, etc. which is the ONLY way to tell for sure. If the guy was just interested in the engine it would explain the lack of gauges, special domed hood, bucket seats and things like the special appearance package. As these where NOT standard and had to be ordered as an option! Nice car here but an even rare car would be one with the L78 396 engine. this would have been the 375 HP version but was phased out in Oct 1969 as the big 454 was offered. They allowed the remaining stock to be used up but after that you had to go for the 350 HP 396 or the other 454 engines! Thought I remember only around 2500 of the L78's were built. And to though more confusion in the mix the engine was actually a 402! Thought is government ordered all engines of 400 inches or less to meet EPA crap at some point so GM just bored them to 402 but still used the 396 labeling! Managed to keep my 1970 SS396 350HP (2nd owner) and is in factory stock condition with all the special appearance packages! Check chevellestuff.net or .com?
Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
138 SS identification ended in yr 1968 from 1969 on they all showed 136 regardless of SS or non SS

Gentlemen, thanks! About impossible to beat, as only Original ONCE (Super Survivor, though obviously a few Age- Degraded things need replacing, etc...)!! Interestingly, I done most of maintenance on my **70 Dodge 383/:: Obviously all modern fluids , oils, etc so much better now......for longevity’s sake,.......( actually I did have to switch over to ELECTRONIC IGNITIONS, much better performances: those plugs/ Points a real Labor in hot 383/engines, etc.)

Yes needs a clay bar for sure!
Clay bar won't do no good. It old crappy laquer and it will take a repaint to make that black nice!! Black paint is very unforgiving.

nope it was rebuilt and it is a fake it don't even have a tack or a ls engine so it is no ls or a ss
Thanks, seem true.....understandably some
PEOPLE like “preserved, “seems like could be a lot of work/Finesse to for a TRUE PRESERVATION... I kind OF LEAN, TO OEM preferring SURVIVORS( though , INTERESTINGLY, the horrible brakes( even Putting DUAL Master cylinders, equipment safety / fluids) ..... some of my cars (54 FORD (axtually, . lose brakes if damp),61 & 66 FORD XL, I had go to METALLIC BRAKES , &. COOLANT RECOV SYS,etc).....
Beautiful, except, stripes no biggie, but the cowl induction would've been perfect.
I wonder if this car is 4 sale or sitting in a collection?. I'd own it and drive it.
Thank you for viewing and sharing your thoughts.
and u would get ripped off because it is a fake LS car and with no tack it makes it a fake ss car
Hi Lou, there is something strange about this SS Chevelle the tach is part of the SS package and this car does not have a tach,... check video at 3.43
Hi Newton Washington, You're right, no tach. Lou
Hi Lou thanks for the reply, back in the day i bought a SS454 Chevelle new and i always check the tach to make sure it has the correct redline marking for a LS6, I will say i have never seen a SS 454 without a tach. Thanks for all your videos i do enjoy them.
HI Newton, Sounds like you had a cool car too :-) You're welcome, and glad you're along for the ride, Lou
because it is a fake they even claim it is a L.S. car with out the L.S. engine
A museum piece at this point. That car will only go up in price as the year's roll buy if you keep it like it is right now.
Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing.
I agree. Keep it as it is. It can act as a reference point for others restoring them.
but it is a fake ls car no tack means fake ss
@@jeffrey4547 lol. Dreamer
👍🔥😎🔥👍
:-)
I would put a few miles on it ...💯💯
1/4 mile at a time..let that car live and drive it at a dragstrip..best chevelles ever built ls6s
That car is begging to be taken to tje limit
Hi Sammy B., I like driving them too, however with the uniqueness of so few miles, I can understand why the Care Taker would want to keep low miles on it. Thank you for viewing and sharing your thoughts, Lou
to bad this is a fake for fact
Where is the cowl induction shaker hood??? THAT makes a difference in the horsepower. Mine came with the shaker hood.
Hi Reginald, You're right, it's not on this one. Glad to read you have a cool car too :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you see many cars on this Channel you enjoy! Please Subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this CZcams Channel, Lou
Goodnight mr. street hemi.
Hey Lou is that LS6 cowl delete?
Hey Hot80s, Not sure of the "cowl delete" and hoping a Viewer with knowledge can share. Thank you for viewing and commenting :-) Lou
it is a fake ls car
Beautiful machine curious on the hood no cowl emblems or vacuum scoop , was that a option ? SS and then ad cowl induction must have been a extra option ?
Hi FISTSLIKEBULLETS2, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Hmmm, not sure why this one didn't have those options. Thank you for viewing and sharing. Yea it's possible I believe it , it was on 4 jack stands and under two car covers what a beauty I would sleep next to her every night WOW
Hi Gerod Evans, Glad you enjoyed this one and received a "WOW" from you :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you see many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
now this car i believe is truly original! what would you value the car at in march 2020, assuming you still own it? thanks
Glad you enjoy this one :-)
and u are wrong it is a fake one look at the engine tells me all no l.s. in it
I hope they changed the oil....and I believe they were actually 500 HP
I'm sure they changed the oil :-)
if it is not a fake ls car but this car is a fake
Camera man doesn't know jaxkshit about cars. I love it. Lol.
You should get Glen Patrick Nichols (muscle car barn finds) to do a proper documentation video.
Interesting that it doesn't have the posi track decal in the trunk for a 450hp car. Dummy lights on the dash too. 🤯 The dude that ordered it made all the wrong choices on the check list but he did manage to check the rare color black 19 19 upper and lower. I can see it is an 1970 April fools car as well.
Interesting you comment "Camera man doesn't know jaxshit about cars". Sounds like a "know it all" comment considering I'm spending my time and energy to share videos with you. And yet when I go to your CZcams Channel and you have a statement "Lighten up and stop hating on people" Stay well, Lou
Glen Patrick Nichols is boring!!
this car is so fake it is a joke they don't even know what a ls engine looks like no tack no ss
@@jeffrey4547 What a poser
He started it with 50 year old oil?
Hmmm, didn't think of that.
If you listen closely, he said "Had the original oil when we got it". So I would think for sure, he changed it...
I know Really ???? LOLOLOLHAHA
Wow
:-)
wow for a fake car
No stripes?
No stripes.
The lowest mileage LS6 I have heard about was red I think in an auto trader with under 40 original miles.
WOW.
4k miles in 50 years.. a really new ss. chevelle..1970.
Hi randy jones, Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
why no tach?
Tach was an option back then. This car is a bare bones SS LS6.
Not sure.
because it is not a ss car or a ls with out the ls engine
side post battery?
Should be top post.
:-0
don't worry it is a fake
'hasn't been driven since 1973' ??? --- there's something to be said about how sad that is, these cars need to be DRIVEN, roar down the road, open that engine up for God's sake! not enjoying a car like this is a sin, and when you're gone somebody else sure as hell will be opening it up on the road.....
I like driving them too.
I like driving them too.
this is a rebuilt fake no tack no ls engine means one big fake
@@jeffrey4547 well lots of these cars were ordered 'no frills' to tac's or stripes etc...
people just keep the options at the minimum the engine is all that's really important if you're a muscle car lover --- plus the VIN# will confirm if it is or isn't a true SS
Sounds so Freakin Quite ! Imagine if it had Headers ! That is so funny,,,no tech or gauges,, like as if it came from Flint Michigan !!! LOLOLOLHAHA

So the original owner couldn’t buy a 454 directly from the dealer for his gasser, so he bought the Chevelle so he could obtain the engine that way. Hmmmmmm.......
I guess so.
Taking the engine out is one way to keep the miles low on the car....lol
Either way, beautiful car.
it is a fake no tack not even a ss and they have no idea what a ls looks like bb chevy it has to be a ls
How is the fluid not bad or the brakes master cylinder
Hmmm, Not sure.
@@loucostabile I am that story doesn't add up. I'm a mechanic none of it . Plus you would flush all the fluids out before you started it been sitting for 50 years . The whole he didn't wash it is b.s. Someone kept that car and maintenance up . No way cover up or not .
Not even a Tach? Wow!
You'd have to see the build sheet unless it was special order, no ls6 came with out a tach. It had a high performance 6500 red line tach, all the other ss chevelle only had 5500. Also where's the working flap on the cowl induction, no stripes, no hood pins. It does have the double snorkel air cleaner which is rare.
That appears to be the way this one came.
that would mean not a ss car and no ls engine in either
@@kristopherlalko7046
They could be ordered with pretty much everything deleteable by the punch cards. There is a 70 Chevelle SS 454 (not ls) 4 speed station wagon that was hand walked down the assembly line by the ordering dealer and plant manager. I have 👀seen it with my own eyes back in the late 70's.
That paint needs some TLC.
Thank you for sharing what you noticed.
@@loucostabile In 1970 I bought a brand new LS6,black,M22,4:10,console,buckets,cowl induction,the whole enchilada.Sold it 1 year later.Think about that car all the time
Original air inside the tires original gasoline pumped in '73 just like the original oil that was never changed lol
@M Nunya yeah everything made in freaking China now and all the new cars look the same
@M Nunya yup definitely needs new shoes!!

what a fake L.S. car
How much does it cost today?
Hi Aashutosh K.C., No idea. Lou
u can get a better car cheaper like by a real ss car instead of a fake
What on earth is the estimated value? A million or more?
No idea on the price this car would sell for.
i don't think they really put a price on a fake car all this is a chevelle that is all
sure hope they changed out that engine oil back then oil was ALL ORGANIC and it does go rancid! it stores well sealed but once you open it and run it, mix all that air in it.. yea, 4-5 years its BAD, remember its organic

I love how all these unrestored muscle cars are coming out the wood work now that this barn find stuff is the trend i think alot of it is bs ppl are stamping blocks and the 1970 chevelle is the easiest car to clone and call original ooops now the cats out the bag i guess i better make a video of my 12 original mile ls7 70 chevelle the only one ever made i swear it !!!!
Hi Taylor desmond, Sounds like you have a great car :-) Looking forward to seeing the video. Lou
@@loucostabile lol they never made a ls7 chevelle it was a joke and to be clear i wasnt attacking your video its a really nice car !!! I was just commenting on the trends that always come out with car guys as you may see doing these videos ... Everyone now has a barn find numbers matching car of course untill the next phase comes out theres more 70 chevelle ss these days than chevy made thats all im saying anyways nice car nice video
i thought it was funny too no tack means not a ss no ls engine not a ls
@@taylordesmond9809 1970 chevelle ss l.s. 6 454 small block and a l.s. 7 427 small block both were used in the 70 chevelle just they only built 6 with the ls 7 and this car is a fake i can be fact checked at ls web sight
