In most cases, you should indeed turn on “make this my home Xbox” for DRM reasons. It will allow other users in your household to play games you purchased or have on your game pass account.

How is the xbox with playing media types off of a pen drive?
For example i can put just about any movie type file, photo or audio file onto a usb drive and plug it into my ps3 it will play it with no problems 90% of the time vs putting it directly into the usb port on a tv.

Yes you can listen and watch media from a USB but you need to have the music and the video player apps installed.

I would of liked to see some innovation in the UI and the controller but that's too much for Microsoft engineers.
I personally dont care about the controller ( if its not broke dont fix it ) but the ui is a bit disappointing.
