    • P0016 VW 1.4tsi Timing... another timing chain failure on the 1.4TSI.
    A video showing how to replace the timing chain on a ea111 1.4tsi. This MK5 Golf GT came in running rough and had a P3008 fault code logged for the G40 camshaft sensor - signal out of range. I tested the cam sensor wiring and had a 5 volt reference, and a square wave hall sensor switching 5v down to 0v tested on a PICO oscilloscope, and a good earth. So the cam sensor is working ok. I checked the timing with the locking tools and found both cams to be advanced in relation to the crankshaft timing. This confirmed our suspicions of a timing problem. I stripped down the timing cover and found a stretched timing chain. The chain was so stretched that the tensioner allowed the chain to jump on the crank (the cams were in time to one another still). The timing chain, tensioner, and guides were replaced and the issue rectified.

How is the engine and what's your opinion, I just bought a second hand 150000 miles on dash VW Touran with the 1.4 bmy and I'm quite concerned about its reliability. My car has a dsg6 automatic gearbox, I dive like am old man, would last a long time of I look after it changing the oils, filters and timing chain in time? Cheers!

      @@soareandrei6504 DSG 6 is very good. Just change the gearbox oil at a workshop that has done it before.
      The engine is not reliable. I still have it and love it, but it is very fragile.
      Change the engine oil to 5W30 Castrol LL (504/507.000) at MAX 10.000km...
      I still drive it, but a lot can go wrong on these.
      If you change the timing chain, then to a complete change. Also the timing gears, rails and check the other chain to the oil pump.
      A full original set from VW with everything is about €900-1000 for the parts, but it has every thing for a complete timing chain change.
      The water pump drives the supercharger, so if that breaks it is about €500 for the part alone + labour.
      Spark plugs and coils are not the best either, but I keep mine.

    Hi, when I opened the timing chain cover/housing then found timing chain was almost off the exhaust sprocket. Tensioner was fully released, timing chain almost touching in the middle at guides. One of the screws was lying at bottom of chain housing, bolt smashed, suffered blows from chain, pulleys etc. Do new timing chain to install.
    Most importantly, best way to achieve TDC is by TDC gauge. It’s more accurate than “drop screw in cylinder” method, and through piston stop tool. I have also removed sump so when it cylinder1 was at TDC, I checked crank shaft lobes from underneath , they were parallel to ground and locking tool goes straight into side of crank lobes. Hope that helps if somebody else is in same situation as me.

    • @ssss-df5qz
      @ssss-df5qz Před rokem

      there's a locking pin for TDC on the back though. The gauge as far as I'm aware is to "check" the timing chain easily and is utterly pointless to use in the actual timing of the engine. The difference between TDC on the gauge and TDC on the crank lock pin is literally a fag paper. If you were there trying to keep dead TDC on the gauge you'd have a right headache.

I mean how often should a timing chain TENSIONER should last for in the 1.4 TSI engine? A family member here in Australia is going through same issue and VW Australia are claiming that a case like this has never happened in Australia. Just out of warranty and just clocked around 100000kms always serviced by VW. IF this is a design issue surely there is a class action with this??

      I think i mention in the video (but maybe not) that you are supposed to remove the sump for this reason. But you can get away with it installed if you are careful and have done this before. Applying a thin smear of the silicone sealant used for the corners of the timing cover was used on the top of the sump gasket. If there was a broken guide found upon removal of the timing cover, the sump would have to be removed to remove the pieces. I have done it this way on multiple 1.4tsi engines and other makes and models. It takes care and patience, you can't just slap it together. But I'd advise a first timer to remove the sump.

      Glad I could help mate! The best way to fill them is with a tool that can pull a vacuum on the system, which pulls all the radiator hoses flat. The vacuum in the system then pulls the water and coolant in with no air locks.
      But to be honest, these engines are pretty good at bleeding themselves. Just pour your mix into the coolant resevoir, and start the engine with the cap off the resevoir. Run the engine until up to operating temperature with the heater switched on to High (maximum heat). Keep topping the level up whilst the engine warms up, keeping the bottle full. Once the radiator has cycled on and off, take it for a drive. Let the engine cool and recheck the level. Top up where necessary.

      These engines crack pistons. Either do a compression test, or disconnect the coil packs and crank the engine and listen to how it cranks. Low compression on 1 cylinder will make the engine cranking sound uneven as it'll speed up on the cylinder with low compression due to less resistance on the starter.

      I left the sump on but it is best to take it off really. Makes reassembling easier, you can clean the old oil out of the sump, and yes it means you can replace the oil pump chain if it is worn too. Sometimes they are ok, and sometimes the customer doesn't want to spend any more money. The cam variator is easily tested. If you buy a febi chain kit it tells you all the info you need to know.

    Hi Four Rings Auto, I have got a mk5 golf GT 170hp and was wondering at what mileage should I replace the timing chain. Also experiencing a little rattle sometimes on cold startup for a couple of second but I think that is due to pressure not being built up? Could you explain? Thanks!

    • @FourRingsAuto
      @FourRingsAuto  Před 4 lety +1

      The early 1.4tsi in the mk5 gt were known to stretch chains, which can cause a rattle on cold start. Also, the inlet camshaft variator pulley for the vvt can rattle before oil pressure builds up if it isn't locking correctly like it should. Either way, a rattle on cold start is gonna mean removal of the timing cover and inspection of all components. You can remove just the sump to inspect the tensioner, how far it is out will give an idea of chain stretch. Also, there is a technical bulletin for the tensioners sticking in a de-tensioned position, which with a stretched chain can result in the timing jumping. Better to get it sorted now before it becomes expensive.

I checked the timing again and it is spot on. Put it back together and let it run through a warm up without going over 2000 rpm as I was thinking it could be VVT related. No pending fault, which makes me think it is a VVT issue. Is this a valid way to check this (Im assuming VVT doesnt kick in till higher RPM). Perhaps its a cam pos sensor issue. The only other possible problem I could see was the positioning of the cams in their journals as they did slide when I was installing the cam gears- should the ends be flush with the end caps (where you slot in the timing lock). • @FourRingsAuto
      @FourRingsAuto  Před 2 lety +1

      Needs to go in easily. In my video showing the 1.4tsi timing chain replacement, I explained that you should torque the cam bolts but not do the degree turn. Then rotate the engine twice and reinstall the timing tools. If the tools are hard to get in, loosen the cam pulleys again and repeat the process. Once the timing tools fit easily, then do the degrees on the cam pulley bolts.
      Sometimes the cheap eBay tools are difficult to fit because of poor tolerances too though.

    • @FourRingsAuto
      @FourRingsAuto  Před 5 lety +1

      It will jump and hit valves with a stretched chain rather than the chain be stretched enough alone for the timing to go that far out. This one had jumped on the crank it seems, as both cams were in time with one another still.
      You are correct with hpfp failure lime that, more seen on the fsi v8 and v10. Fuel injector leakage will also result in fuel in the oil. Any form of rich condition repair should have the oil changed afterwards.

That's why in the instructions and in the video, it says to only torque the bolts to the nm amount, rotated the engine and recheck if the tool fits easily. Then carry out the stretching of the bolts. It is ok to loosen the bolts if the stretch procedure hasn't been carried out yet.

      Even if you're rarely driving it the engine oil (and filter) should be replaced every year at an absolute minimum. I wouldn't bother changing the chain/tensioner if it's not rattling or making unusual noises but like I said, service the car regularly as the tensioner relies on oil pressure and old/poor quality oil is a common cause of chain failure.
      PS Go for a decent drive and give the car a good rev every so often once its up to temp, short distance driving is terrible for these d.i. cars
