Head Slump: When Not To Worry

- For newborns and young babies, chin-to-chest head slump (not side to side tilts or turning) is a concern in the car seat: check your seat’s recline, harness tightness, and insert use to alleviate that situation!
For older babies with good head control, toddlers, and older children, head slump is not a safety concern! Unless they have a medical condition that prevents them from doing so, they can and will move their heads to maintain their breathing, just like an adult would.
NEVER use add-on products or accessories to try and hold your child’s head in place. Such products have not been crash tested with your car seat and may lead to severe injury by affecting the way the child’s head moves in a crash.
Good information, thank you!
I don’t see any pinned posts on your page. Am I missing it?
Sorry, this was originally posted to my TikTok, the pinned post is there
@@countrykidscarseatsafety I found it, thank you so much!!!
I very much disagree with this. There have been reports of dangers happening even when they know how to hold their head up. My son is two, has low muscle tone due to health issue. For him, I do not believe it's safe for him to be in head slump position.
That’s a perfectly valid concern when there is a medical need like that to consider, but for a child without any special medical needs that impact things like breathing and muscle control, it’s not a concern after they have good head control.
If it were a concern after that age, we would have a ton of data to show that, because so many kids do sleep in the car with their heads in that position it would be happening often, but it simply isn’t because they can and do move their heads if needed, just like adults.
