  • Here's the Clawhammer Brew System: www.clawhammer...
    Here's the full recipe: www.clawhammer...
    The kegs are running low in the office and summer is almost here, so we needed an easy drinking beer that would be ready ASAP. That's why we brewed up a hazy Session IPA, a perfect beer for hot days outside.
    We only used one hop, Lemondrop, and put it in as a whirlpool addition. These hops will hopefully give our beer a refreshing, citrus flavor. Watch the video to see a tasting at the end or read our recipe and make it yourself!

    Brewed up a mini-mash version of this, and tasted first bottle today. Turned out pretty good as described, good summer beer. I will be drinking this while my quad ages.
    Mini-mash: Added 1 lb of Carapils as someone had recommended in the comments.
    Replaced the 6 lbs of Pilsner with 1.6 lbs of Pilsner + 3.3 lb Briess Pilsen Light LME
    OG:1.044, 5 gallon. 2 days later dryhopped and left it in (to reduce oxidation, since wasn't going to leave it in the fermenter long). Bottled on day 8. FG:1.012 , 4.5 gallons. Drank one 13 days later.

    I’d LOVE to have one of these fancy brew systems but I do take pride in making really good beer using entry level fermenters, $20 5 gallon brew kettle, $150 propane burner setup and $50 corny kegs. Makes people all that much more impressed when you tell non beer makers “Thanks, I made that with a stock pot and some plastic buckets basically” hahahahaha. Although I did just upgrade to a $50 plastic pressure fermenter that will also let me hook Co2 up to it to force transfer it using a floating dip tube into a co2 filled keg. ZERO OXIDATION

    Just made this, its fermenting rn :0)
    Update, the beer is done and its amazingly fresh, couldve done with a slight increase in the non-fermentable grain to get more body, sligtly more pilzner to get the alcohol up a touch, and slightly more boiled hops for more bitterness. My recommendation if youre making it for yourself. Its light and fresh as it is, but it tastes closer to a week cider as this.

    i was wondering does lemon drop have a very pronounces flavor or is it subtle? been interested in trying for a good while now. other then that ive been on the hunt for red robin 1969 lager clone which im thinking they use an addition of lemon drop considering what i remember by the taste and reviews online. but not sure when to use it in a lager or if its better dry hopped and how much do i add to get the lemony flavor but not to overdue it. too bad red robin doesnt sell it anymore. it was a stand out beer and it only last a while until they discontinued it a few years ago which im not sure why. from what i read online its got 18 ibu and it was from new belgium brewing co.

    Why boiling wort 60 min without hops?

    • @DzhonijsDeelis
      @DzhonijsDeelis Před 6 lety +5

      I found that weird too. Usually, there is at least one addition. But I guess the logic is to not make the beer bitter but to make it super hoppy and aromatic instead. The earlier you add the hops, the more time they are in the wort and thus release more alpha acids, making the resulting beer more bitter. The later additions of hops don't really add that much to the bitterness (and flavor for that matter, although such large quantities will give it a punch, especially with cool super aromatic hops like Mosaic, Galaxy) but mostly contribute to the aroma. However, in my experience, this beer better be consumed fast, because the longer it sits, the more of the aroma will fade. As it is with all IPA's and other hoppy beer variations. Hope this helps. Have a good one.

    • @ReactionBrewingCompany
      @ReactionBrewingCompany Před 6 lety +1

      Alex the information around this is all over the place from people that agree with you to people that have "proven" in a lab that it's false. Even temps swing in a big range when it's brought up (where different people say isomerization "stops"). In reality I don't think anyone really has factual information on hop isomerization below 180*. Their IBU is definitely a guess, I've made beers with only whirlpool/dry hops that have more perceived bitterness than beers that calculated a much higher actual IBU. Obviously the whirlpool/dry hop beer had a lot more hops per gallon.
      In the end I have decided that unless tested in a lab IBUs are a guess at best regardless of the temp their added at.

    • @ClawhammerSupply
      @ClawhammerSupply  Před 6 lety +1

      The beer STYLE (hazy IPA) is generally in the range of 40-55 IBUs. If we said that this beer was 40-55 in the video, we misspoke. This beer had super low IBUs. It still had tons of hop flavors and aroma coming through. I can't really speak to the yeast. We'll have to use it again. What i will says we liked the lemon drop hops but didn't love them.

    • @Alex-dv6cx
      @Alex-dv6cx Před 6 lety

      Saccarappa Recording Studios abv is affected by the amount of sugar consumed by the yeast. So not so much yeast as your fermentables like grain amount and type, sugar type, etc.

    Nice video! I'd like to make it myself but I kinda have a problem getting those hops. Anyway I noticed you spray the wort when reciculating, that produces oxidation, you may wanna add something that puts the entry of wort under liquid level.
    I'll keep watching your content, keep up the good work

    Where is your sparge water coming from?

    • @ClawhammerSupply
      @ClawhammerSupply  Před 6 lety

      You mean the water that's coming out of the spray nozzle? It's pulled from the bottom of the kettle with a pump and gets recirculated through the grain bed. All of the water we need is added to the kettle at the start of the brew day and we don't add any more unless the grain bill is really big. This is a no-sparge brew method.

    • @brettomomyces
      @brettomomyces Před 6 lety

      you also achieve some bitterness below 190F, and with dry hop additions. this style uses so many hops that enough bitterness is created and using a traditional 60 minute addition would be overkill and ruin the fruity and juicy character

    I just brewed this beer, my question is on your gravity readings. Am I missing something here? How does SG 1.034 & FG 1.010 equal 4.2%?
    My SG was 1.040 and FG 1.010, to me that's a 3.9% ABV beer, no?
    I'm using Brewer's friend online ABV calculator.

    • @JacobJNilsson
      @JacobJNilsson Před 5 lety

      Their OG was 1.042. Which accordingly to brewers friend will land on 4.2%, if FG gets to 1.010.

    • @PiperHipsz

    • @JacobJNilsson
      @JacobJNilsson Před 5 lety

      Maybe they were shooting for 1.034 and got 1.042. You don't always land your OG where the recipe tells you right?
