Amazing RESTORATION of a PAINTED VINTAGE DRESSER

- I purchased this 1960s painted 5 Drawer Tall Boy Bassett Mid-Century Modern Dresser for $25 from Facebook Marketplace. There is significant damage to the walnut veneer edge banding. A few other repairs are necessary for this piece. I will attempt to use Klean Strip Premium Paint Stripper and Citri Strip to remove a layer of paint, primer, and the original lacquer finish. After completely disassembling and sanding this dresser, I chose to apply General Finishes Candlelite Gel Stain with General Finishes Arm-R-Seal Oil-Based Wipe-On Polyurethane. This is an attempt at a detailed restoration of a beautiful Mid-Century Piece that I hope to enjoy for many years. You don't want to miss this transformation.

It all depends on the quality and condition of the piece or the woodwork. I just had all the dark stained woodwork and doors in my house painted white- but it was just cheap 1 x 4 pine in the first place.
@@thekatvita Yes..I picked up a vintage desk-ish vanity..Not the best shape and already painted. Scuff sanded with wet sandpaper in case there was lead in the paint.
I'm painting it steampunk with graphics. It had a thin wood top but is SO sturdy. Was thinking of even pitching it for awhile before but even some expensive stuff from stores wiggles a little bit under applied weight. This was just too well built in the end.
'Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder .... or the current owner'. I have my grandparents Hoosier cabinet, the first new piece of furniture they ever purchased. It's now in the original wood-tone. I paid someone to strip it for me. It had thick layers of what appeared to be shellac, white lead paint and something that resembled roofing felt paper glued to the sides covered with some thick black goo. (Tar?) No way would I paint it. Even the flour sifter functions. Sentimental value is important.
YESSS! I'm sick and tired of all the "flipping" videos consisting of slapping a layer of paint over furniture, preferably in some weird muddy colour.

@@MadCityModern Thank you for asking Barry. I haven't used any social media to chronicle my journey. And after more than two years of living this way it no longer seems so unusual. The nomad life definitely has different challenges than brick and mortar living. What I enjoy most is not having to pay rent, water and electric bills. And having my home with me no matter where I go. I can no longer use the excuse that I left it at home (damn it). What I have been working on to satisfy my love of mid century and interior design is organizing and decorating my 5'x10' storage unit. Watching you refinish furniture reignited my creativity. How great and convenient for you to have a garage to bring new life to mid century pieces. Thanks again for your response.

this is one of the few times I’ve seen a refinished furniture piece I didn’t absolutely HATE. definitely still prefer the natural wood and your restoration (as I usually do lol) but the past owner didn’t try to make the dresser look obnoxiously trendy which I really appreciate.
Yeah I'm not sure if the blue and white was a good choice for an iconic piece. I had to choose a dark finish to conceal some of the damage caused by the prep sanding before paint
I agree. I kinda liked the blue and white, and thought they’d done a decent job of it. Nice and graphic. Definitely not keeping “an iconic piece” in its original style, but not terrible for an update by someone just wanting to make a piece work for themselves, who probably didn’t know it was “iconic,” may very well not have cared, and almost certainly didn’t have the skills to do the full restoration that would have been necessary to make it usable. Paint was doable for them, and for once, it didn’t suck!
As someone who has occasionally painted furniture and would be unable to do the full restoration myself, I sympathize with the previous owner.
And I’m sure that it’ll be glorious when restored lovingly, too. :) (still watching!)

I feel your pain with all of that paint removal....what a time consuming task! I now only pick up pieces that have the original factory finish and hope that someone else saves the painted ones ☺️. You should be very proud of yourself as this is an amazing transformation.

I usually use multiple layers of stripper when there are multiple layers to remove. Then I finish with some stripper on a fine steel wool to do details and curves and it also helps to pull the rest out of the grain. So happy to see someone saving furniture rather then ruining it with paint. Nice job!

Hoping the paint trend goes away for awhile
I think it's just because it is cheap and easy for people who need something to use and don't have a lot of money. They don't realize what they have nor so they necessarily care at that moment. Some maybe have it in the back of their minds to later on "refinish it someday". But again most don't have the idea of the work that goes into these things. As we've seen, it isn't a couple hours on a weekend of stripping, sanding and staining like they might imagine.

WOW! A master piece at the end. This dresser must have prayed to the gods to end up with you. It is simply beyond my understanding how someone felt that painting this beautiful Mid Century dresser white and blue was fitting.

I've had great luck with Citristrip in the past. As a newbie it was nice to have it penetrate just one layer at a time- I knew I wasn't damaging anything and it was fun to see the different colors the piece had over it's life. I can see how it would be frustrating for someone under a time restraint. It works best when laid on thick, covered with plastic and allowed to do it's thing for 30-60 min
I used to like Citristrip, until they changed the formula, and I discovered Klean Strip

My father( and my mom as well) did this kind of work for years and years and he was a master!, so I know about which I speak!!
His methods were a bit different but in the end, the furniture could just speak!

cause they think paint enhances it...c'mon folks. I don't think it does but I am all for function and use, rather than dumping pieces in a landfill.
Definitely a keeper with the hours you put into it. I got some preloved dental tools from a friend to help get out the bits however you were very patient to finally pull off the detailing and then get them in shape to reapply.
I try to watch ads all the way thru for youtubers under 100K subscribers. Continue on with your restoration magic.

It had obviously been painted with some care. You can imagine the previous owner spending ages applying all that blue and white paint and then congratulating themselves on giving their old dresser a “modern” look!

I collect antiques, and too many times I've seen pieces ruined by people doing "upgrades". Some I don't dare do anything with for fear of doing more damage. I like seeing these pieces of history restored and rescued. Keep up the good work.

MCM af. This would have driven me nuts, you have worlds of patients. The walnut color was just beautiful but no, Barry had to stain it orange. This does look great with your existing interior, and a muted orange. It is a matter of preference, that ashen/grey walnut is MY preference and tends to blend with most new flooring that is current. It is hard to tell how much work went into this, I assume tons. No matter, it is beautiful. Thanks.

@@MadCityModern No sir, I am not "right". Far from being "right". Just me, I did look up the dark walnut color, from gelstain, and I personally would have preferred it, but that is me. NOW. Since this MCM furniture, they ALL would have been a version of this color, they didn't have too many options. Have to say that my interior colors personally ARE cobalt and burnt orange, so this would be perfect for me; a high contrast. Generally look at the hot sellers of new flooring, and consider how these colors would look against those shades. I am thinking that this veneer might be black walnut? When your sanded it, you would know, it has almost a burnt smell.
