Diamondback Sidekick vs Wrangler vs Heritage, Sidekick redemption. but which one shot the best?

  • hey folks, I've been waiting to do this video for 3 days. I wanted to test the new Diamondback sidekick against the Ruger Wrangler and the Heritage Rough Rider. I had some suspicions that the sidekick might be keyholing some of the rounds. so I wanted to make a better Target and compared against other 22 handguns. I think I have proven to myself that the sidekick is a good gun and that I was just overreacting to some cheap paper targets.

    Sidekick - good groups, shoots a bit low
    Wrangler - All over the place
    Rough Rider - Pretty darn good

    I have four Rough Rough Riders. Three of them shoot pretty good but my 6 3/4 inch barrel Heritage will hit tin cans all day long at 55 yards. I was glad to see the Heritage out shoot the Ruger.. Great video.

      @HamiltonOutdoors  Před rokem +2

      So far from my experience, most of the Heritage Rough riders will outshoot the rugers. That's just the way it is. I don't know why Ruger can't make the wranglers a little more accurate. Crowning the muzzle might help.

    Very interesting test Rob! I was enjoying watching bullets hit and counting 'em. Glad that Sidekick performed better and eased your mind. The Ruger is what it is and that little Heritage made us proud.😁 Some of those were really good groups!

      @HamiltonOutdoors  Před 2 lety +3

      Yeah the Heritage definitely took the show on this day. I'm going to repeat this test next week and try shooting off the rest with some different types ammo and see if the Ruger is still as bad as it was in this test. I think it shoots better than that. The sidekick and the heritage both have exceptionally good triggers. The little Ruger is heavier and combined with my shaking just made for a bad day of shooting it.

    I don't own a Diamondback Sidekick yet but I do own the Ruger Wrangler and a Heritage Roughrider. My Roughrider will out shoot my Ruger Wrangler in the accuracy(point of aim) and precision(group size) categories(at 7 yards) all day long. But, it's not as wild as your Ruger Wrangler. The Roughrider's trigger is superior to the Ruger Wrangler's trigger. However, the Wrangler after shooting it with about 1000 rounds of .22 LR it has gotten better. Something is wrong with your Wrangler: Trigger pull, Barrel, or Sights. Something is causing very bad groups. My Ruger Wrangler, out of the box, had a loose Torx screw that is in front of the trigger guard that I had to tighten up. Check all of your Wrangler's Torx screws for looseness. Since bad groupings are happening with all four brands of .22 LR ammo, it's the gun. The Sidekick's(single action) and Roughrider's triggers are much cleaner breaks and lighter pulls than the Ruger Wrangler. But the Wrangler shouldn't be that bad of group spread. To shoot the Wrangler accurately with a good group, I have to grip the gun tight and smoothly press the trigger straight to the rear until it breaks and fires. Otherwise, you will jerk the Wrangler.

    • @HamiltonOutdoors
      @HamiltonOutdoors  Před 2 lety +2

      Ralph I do believe my Ruger shoots better than this I have shot it better than this in the past. End of the three guns that definitely has the most stiff trigger pull. And since I've had covered I shake like a leaf. I'm going to repeat this test hopefully next week and shoot them all off of arrest and see if I can't redeem the Ruger a little bit. Although I have always known that the heritage will shoot better than the Ruger. And it appears that the sidekick is going to shoot better than the Ruger. But I do think the Ruger will do better than what I did with it on that day. Thanks for watching I appreciate it hope you're doing well

    I have a sidekick and the rough rider. I prefer the 9 shot capacity, swing out cylinder and DA/SA trigger of the Sidekick. The front sight is supposed to be taller than necessary so you can file your front side down to match the point of impact of the ammo you intend to carry in the gun. Very few people are aware of this or actually do it. I had to file down nearly half of my front sight to bring my point of impact up to my point of aim on my Sidekick.

    Definately looks like grouping the Heritage beats them all.
    But the thing about guns and trying to zero them? The warmer the barrel gets or the colder it gets affects where the projectile hits.
    But between thesthree pistols it seems the Heritage with grouping and accuracy whipped some ass on this range. With some pretty expensive ammo.

  • @TightwadTodd

    Here is my take. With the DB, it is a new presentation. Although it is a reproduction of the Hi standard, it is made with inferior materials to keep the cost down. I feel there will be a trial period, where they will have to work out some bugs. The Wrangler is a quick ditch effort to compete on the inexpensive market, with Heritage, who pretty much held the corner of the market with the inexpensive revolver for a long time. I don't feel that Ruger puts much stock or effort into the Wrangler and they have stated, that they will not offer it in 22 Mag, as they dont feel the material will hold up. The Heritage had many years to develop their revolvers and keep the cost down. While there were issues with the Heritage, they were minor in most cases and easily remedied by the purchaser, loose screws being the main culprit. Now, having said that, Heritage was recently bought out by Taurus and it seems they are more interested in producing novelty items rather than focusing on QC on their existing models and the issues seem to have increased. The rumor im hearing is, that DB is owned by Taurus as well. I hope DB doesn't fall under that same QC issue as Heritage. For the most part, they are inexpensive revolvers that a person who has the knowledge and want to, can fix and remedy, making them a decent purchase for the price and able to turn into a decent performer. Otherwise, it seems to be a crapshoot, as to whether a person gets a good one, or a poor performer, these days. I love the Idea of the DB and i hope it turns out to be a good one.

    • @HamiltonOutdoors
      @HamiltonOutdoors  Před 2 lety +2

      That was well said, and you are correct on all points the Diamondback is a new offering and will probably go through a developmental phase. In which they'll iron out all the kinks that's assuming that it sells enough units to be viable. And yes Ruger is just thrown together a single action to compete with the heritage and put little thought into its accuracy I have always known that the Heritage Rough riders are more accurate than the rugers. That being said the Diamondback and the Heritage have much better triggers than the Ruger. And I tend to shake a lot especially after covid. So some of that was on me I think. I have shot the gun better than that in the past. I'm going to repeat this test and shoot them off of a rest and see if we get the same results. And yes Heritage is owned by Taurus and has been for a few years, and their quality control was hit and miss and their customer service is terrible. But when you get a decent one they seem to work. And like you said usually the biggest issue is screws backing out. But to Heritage advantage they do sell every part to rebuild this gun at a very reasonable price. Thanks for the input I appreciate you watching glad to have a commenter who is knowledgeable about these types of things. Have a great day

      @@HamiltonOutdoors Appreciate the reply. I have been an ardent defender and fan of the Heritage for years. I don't even mind the safety and find it beneficial in certain applications. Like you, I don't mind doing a little work, both preventative and functional to the guns, at the price point they sell them at but...Not everyone has that knowledge or desire to do so. I was excited about the Wrangler when it came out too. An acquaintance purchased one and allowed me to handle and fire it.I found i was fine with the Heritage. I've owned them about 4 years and my son and I have put 1000's of rounds through them with no failures. mine are both accurate and shoot to point of aim. It's not hard to shoot quarter size groups at 25 yards from a rest. The .22LR is a bit more accurateI. I have also used it on squirrels, rabbits, ground hogs and s few musk rats. I've had a lot of fun with them, especially for the price, they're hard to beat. Get one, everyone wants and likes to shoot it.

    Well, I'm waiting to p/u my new Heritage, I've been watching a ton of great videos learning as much as possible, here are some things, the barrel is made for 22mag the 22lr. is 2 thousands smaller bullet this causes a lost of accuracy, so when looking to sight in for accuracy use the 22mag, , ADJUSTING sights, WINDAGE=before bending the front blade check the barrel tightness it's threaded into the frame, sometimes it can be clocked ,that is, tightened or loosened ( if loosened use blue loktight blue only). Remove and reinstall to correct location, use location scribe mark on the bottom side of the barrel to frame . ELEVATION= if shooting low, put a white little dot on the back side of blade (when you get it dead on) you can file off the top of blade to the top of your white dot . These two adjustments should make your guns aim near perfect, remember use the 22mag. rds they fit the barrel tighter inside more accurately. The guy I saw that did these two adjustments was shooting 1 inch groups at 25 ft I thought that was very VERY IMPRESSIVE !

Hope the three guns it does have the most stiff trigger and therefore a little harder to shoot especially when you shake as bad as I do. If you can find one for rental and try it first or if somebody you know has one would be the way to go. Like I said judging a gun's accuracy by me is doing it and Injustice. Although I will admit the Ruger is less accurate than the heritage or the Diamondback for that matter

    Sidekick:
    I have this gun. I like the design, capacity, and
    swing out cylinder with .22 or .22 Mag. options,
    What I don't like is the extremely heavy trigger,
    tight to cock hammer, and difficult to operate cylinder release.
    Would I buy it again? Absolutely not. If you have weak hands this gun is useless.

    With a little sight adjustment the Sidekick might be as good as the Heritage. I found out that a HKS # 22K speedloader works great for loading spare Heritage cylinders in a hurry. But also found out it doesn't work as smooth on a spare Wrangler cylinder because of tighter chambers. One Wrangler chamber was quite a bit tighter than the rest testing with different brands. Might be the issue in accuracy when they inset the chambers incorrectly. Good video. 👍

    very comprehensive and professional video, thank you. i have both the ruger wrangler and heritage roughrider, as well as a ruger single six and bearcat. my wrangler groups better than yours, to low left, similar spacing to your roughrider, so it’s on me, not the piece. i trust ruger products so either a used single six or new wrangler would be my choice. my roughrider shoots fine but i worry that a heritage is simply built less strong than a ruger. why not send your video to ruger and see what can be done about fixing your wrangler?

    Just for giggles, when you get off your “hell week”, next time you shoot the Diamond back, use your barkeep ejector rod and do them manually. This will tell if it’s a tight chamber or the ejector rod assembly hanging up. This will help eliminate the actual cylinder, or not. If they come out smoothly, then it’s something to do with the ejector rod workings. Maybe the rod is bent. Just my brain working to help you figure all this out.
