In the Pacific War of 1944, the Japanese troops in Indonesia were violently attacked by the US troops. Many Japanese troops became guerrillas, separated from their troops or even annihilated. Among them were Taiwan-Japanese soldiers from Taiwan.
A Takasago volunteer soldier who survived alone being lost in the jungle of Indonesia for 31 years.

I remember reading about this man's story, it is fascinating, yet ironic, to think that all those years, he had no idea the world had gone on without him. He had to get officially relieved by his former superior, before he would finally accept the war was over.

There were actually 3 well-known cases of Japanese soldiers hiding out after WW2 ended. The man you are referring to was Hiroo Onoda who hid in the jungle for 29 years in the Philippines. The second case was Shoichi Yokoi who was discovered hiding in Guam after 28 years.
