  • In this 2013 report, we narrow our focus to just one of our eight D-Day veterans, who returned to Normandy, France last week. Sixty-nine years to the day, Sgt. Major Robert Blatnik was able to walk the same stretch of sand that he and his men assaulted at 6:30am on June 6 in 1944. It was his first time coming back, and he told Doug Dunbar this trip made a memory that will stay with him until the day he dies.

I was a young Marine flying to Okinawa in 1995. Little did I know it would make a huge impression on me. The plane was full of WW2 Marines. There was a special event being held for the 50th Anniversary of the battles for Mount Suribachi and Okinawa. I was omw to serve a 1 year tour in Okinawa so I was in my Dress Alphas. When I walked on that plane you would have thought it was my birthday and everyone was there for a surprise party lmao. They all cheered and introduced themselves and started telling me that I was a little late for the war LOL. I sat next to a Marine Raider who started to get emotional when I sat down next to him. I was only a 20 year old kid but by the time I left that plane I had a whole new respect and understanding of those great men.

Must be hard knowing and seeing what went down there 74 years ago. My great grandfather actually served during WW1 at the Battle Of Verdun and died there. At home he had a wife and a son which who would become my grandfather. I found out a couple years ago though my grandfather since he was part French. I visited Verdun on vacation a year ago and I swear I felt some type of connection. It was weird.

Imagine the odds of actually surviving this beach that day. The gunfire, the screams, the blood. Literally hell on Earth. Can't imagine what these people saw. Respect to everyone who serves and served.

Omaha Joe Whats always been terrifying to think about is how the people who survived just got lucky. There was nothing special or different about them. They just so happened to be in the right place at the right time. If one of them were a little to the right or the enemy gunner had his attention pulled a little more to the left, the people who lived and the people who died would have switched roles really quickly. Going on that beach and knowing that there’s nothing stopping you from dying but chance alone, and knowing that most of the people around you will be gunned down just so you have a chance to make it...I can’t imagine a more hopeless feeling of insignificance in the face of catastrophe...

Some countries don’t get the same rights America gets and to spit on the ones who gave us the opportunity and risked their lives to benefit the future is disgraceful and revolting.
