    adam scored lower than the two competitors who fell because his program wasn't as technically difficult as theirs. adam chose not to attempt any quad jumps at the olympics knowing how many points they are worth because he wanted to skate clean. depending on the type of jump, you can do a quad jump and fall and providing you managed to rotate 4 times in the air, it can still be worth more than a triple jump.

    Just because someone “doesn’t fall” doesn’t mean they win gold? The scoring system is much more complicated than that but it’s just as simple at the same time. As a student, the best example I could think of is how taking a ap class and getting a B is better than taking a regular class and getting an A. It doesn’t mean the student can’t handle an ap class, but the student that attempted something more challenging is considered better. It makes perfect sense

      Yeah, I love Adam he inspired me to start figure skating but we all know he didn’t deserve the gold medal having no quads in his program. It just wasn’t as technically difficult as other people’s. And besides his program was so beautiful and touching that it doesn’t matter what place he got. He really give the performance of a lifetime

      But Adam had a higher technical score Than kolyada due to all of kolyadas falls and sloppy skating. But the panel gave mikhail a higher pcs score to surpass Adam which made no sense.

  • @skaterboy-cz9wj
    @skaterboy-cz9wj Před 6 lety +16

    Like Adam but the scoring system gives higher technical scores to those doing more difficult jumps and Kolyada and Chan have quads unlike Adam. Plus Chan in particular is a far superior skater - skating skills, transitions, edges so there really is no question why Chan was ahead - a better argument is Kolyada should have been behind Adam. In the end, for those interested, it doesn't matter because it didn't effect the team results. USA was too far behind to have a chance for silver let alone gold.

    Hahaha, he is such a politician. Look at what he did, there. He consciously side-stepped criticizing the judges, which would have made him unpopular with people that know enough about the sport to understand that falling during a difficult routine does not make it a bad routine (on the contrary, figure-skating rewards risk-takers), but at the same time, he managed to goodhumoredly give props to his fans that were, with completely good intentions, trying to support him. Rippon thereby completely defused the issue. That was very cagey.
    I fully understand why Rippon chose a safer routine, too. In the context of his difficult past couple of months combined with him having superior technical mastery of the sport, he wasn't going to benefit from choosing a more physically demanding routine. It was an extremely wise decision that got him a bronze, maybe not as good of a sponsorship as a gold-medalist but something to take home with him. However, I expect him to return next Winter Olympics and win a gold in the same event. Keep watching Adam Rippon. This guy is a shark, and sharks only move forward.

      Also next year the scoring system will change a little with less base value assigned to the quad and a -5 to +5 GOE so next season the exact same program might score more favorably. Right now it's game of fallen quads.

      I agree I was very impressed by his response.
      However it does bring up an important point, what is better risk taking or performing flawlessly? Right now it's risk taking but in my opinion it should be a bit more balanced.
      It is really important to the development of the sport that risk taking be worth the effort but I think the decision to lower the quad base score was correct.

Love and sexuality are such a huge part of our everyday life, but heterosexuality is almost ALWAYS assumed--and worse, when it's not heterosexuality, a lot of people tend to freak out.

      If it is socially divisive, than I hope you know it wasn't by the "ghetto"'s choice. We would all prefer to be included, loved, accepted. And yet unfortunately, that's not the case. Being a minority has been and still is something that disrupts people's lives. All the prejudice and discrimination makes LGBTQ's feel insecure, unworthy, and at some state, even suicidal. The least of representation and celebration of who we are as individuals we can get IS extremely important. Nevertheless, his skating is really the reason he should and is getting all that praise. So if he can carry himself to be an excellent ice skater while showing to young queers that they have someone to look up to as well, then yeah, I do think he's doing really, really great.

    Falling doesn’t really affect your score...if your step sequences and your jumps are flawless but your landings aren’t it is very possible to still get a higher score for a skating falling than the one who didn’t If the other skaters program has a higher base score than the one who skated flawless.

    • @mrslibertas3977
      @mrslibertas3977 Před 6 lety +1

    • @colormyworld249
      @colormyworld249 Před 6 lety +4

      Tiffany Camperos For fully rotated quads, a fall and -3 GOE is still worth more than than a clean triple. That's why you see such a splatfest in men's. They go for the quad even if they only land it 50% of the time training because they know even if they fall, it'll be worth it. The problem is when you under rotate that quad. Ala Kolyada SP. Then it's a HUGE problem. 4Lz < and -3 GOE is handing the gold medal over, which is what Kolyada kind of did. But anyway he shouldn't be blamed even though everyone else delivered but him in his team. Every skater has bad days and can fall on any given day, just so happened that he fell when everyone else was clean. Hope his fed doesn't give him too much backlash

    Adam was underscored in the PCS score and should have finished second, ahead of Kolyada. His performance was the most artistic of the night and had no errors. However, the reason he finished third is because Kolyada and Chan had 3 and 3 quads. Quads are the hardest element in skating and Rippon had 0. He didn’t even attempt any in the skate.

  • @jessicagalvin363
    @jessicagalvin363 Před 6 lety +50

    Proud of Team Canada and Team USA. As far as Adam's performance is concern , YES he could have been placed/scored a little higher than the OAR. Mikhail Kolyada is a wonderful skater when HE is completely on with jumps and presentation but as far as this night no. He was not invested in to program until it was too late and plus he had to many errors made during the program. Adam had good positive jumps/spins and great presentation for the whole program. The program was well balanced for what he did. Could not have done it better. So judging between them Adam should have been placed second and Kolyada placed third. Overall proud of TEAM USA and Canada

      I agree technically, Kolyada and Chan performance was worth more because it has Quad’s bu at the end of the day neither of them had a clean performance, not to mention that Adam’s component score should’ve been much higher it was beautifully choreographed and performed much better than Kolyada. But hey maybe the, ISU thinks the audience doesn’t understand Figure Skating.

      @jessicagalvin363 Před 6 lety +1

      Hi dustigenes and Tiffany Camperos. Yes I do realize Adam didn't do the Quad but I believe that was the plan. Have a clean triple jumps program and get the positive grade of execution. That I believe is what Adam did so perfectly that night. Chan yes to be first because of presentation and that really what saved him with the errors he made. Now Kolyada had no presentation until the end of the program and just was lack luster. His quads when on are great but this night was not and should not have been placed over Adam. As you said Tiffany , Adam's total performance was great. Anyways great competition overall. Take care to you both.

    • @dustigenes
      @dustigenes Před 6 lety

      Yes, apparently it was Adam's plan not to attempt a quad. I don't understand why a fail quad is worth more than a good triple, my only concern is if that is consistent. If so, I hope Adam is able to get the confidence to add a quad into his program soon, as he is a great skater. The way judging is now, is so much better than is was 16 years ago. There is little room for cheating now, as long as the scoring remain consistent.

      According to the experts in the field, a large percentage of the male skaters are gay. He didn't win gold because he failed to include a quad jump in his routine. A well-performed quad jump, even if not perfect garners higher points than a triple jump performed perfectly. He skated cleanly, but safely. The two that placed above him took risks and both attempted a quad. He scored lower due to this, not because of his virtue signaling and gay pandering and diva behavior (unfortunately).

      +Joaquin Lomeli it's quite clear you've never watched figure skating in your life. He was scored correctly. The judging has nothing to do with him being gay, it has to do with him having a poor technical content. He is still very enjoyable but he's never going to win anything with the current crop of elite that's happening. In the individual, get ready for a bigger disappointment. PLEASE READ THIS: I am a female who grew up with a brother who I was very close to and who decided in college he might be gay, when it wasn't OK or accepted. He took me along as his 'beard' (I was a very attractive woman) when he went out to rumored gay hot spots to see what it was all about while still pretending to be straight. He was afraid of the whole 'coming out' business, but knew he needed to do it. I was there to hold his hand through it all.
      .
      Over the course of a couple of years with him at these places, I watched the interaction between guys who were attempting to come out and others who were 'out'. I observed some interesting things. SOME of the gay males began to affect a fake, diva-ish and effeminate body posturing and speaking manner when they were around other gay males. They thought it made them more attractive. BUT! When they were around all straight people who didn't know they were gay, they acted completely straight and had none of the effeminate affectations.
      .
      Over the years, I ran into other guys I thought were straight in these gay night spots. They were acting all girly until they saw me, and then they switched back into their 'Alpha Male' normal behavior that they'd always had.
      That's when I realized it was all an act and was not a natural behavior. It is a FAKE PERSONA. So, when I watch Adam Rippon behave in this OVERTLY EFFEMINATE and Diva-like behavior I know it is NOT his authentic self and is done because he is an attention whore, and a GIANT virtue signaler. FAKE, FAKE and more FAKE.
      If he'd not created this stink about Mike Pence, and just skated, we'd all be happy for him. But instead, he had to throw a huge, girly, hissy fit and piss 90% of the population off. Stupid and unnecessary.

    falling doesn't make the rest of your program any less worthy. you get deductions for falling. if your program lacks greatness, even if it is flawless, it's not going to get your first just because other great skaters fell. They already got their deductions and still scored higher than you! Get over it. don't be a sore loser. Start skating even better! Take on bigger and better skills. You got bronze... because you are worth bronze. There are fallers who deserve gold and get gold.

    • @fiercefunky
      @fiercefunky Před 6 lety +1

      Because his inference is those biased fans know more than the judges. Maybe instead of implying that those fans are right, he should take the moment to educate them on why other people who worked HARDER and did MORE rightfully deserved their placements. But no, that would involve actually giving credit to someone from another country instead of playing the coy victim like "well, they're right but, what can I do? I deserved the gold but oh well..." Even the interviewer mentions that he "didn't fall" versus the 1st and second place finishers who did have falls but FAILED (oh how CONVENIENTLY) to mention that the two that fell had quads and Adam didn't.
      I could go out and do a single axel and a single toe loop and a single salchow and "not fall," does that mean I deserve to win over someone like Nathan Chen who might do 5 quads and fall on one?!

      because nationals is not the only deciding factor. All the other skates of the season are factored in and Adam consistently placed higher than Brown. The only reason why Adam placed lower was that he slipped a little on his long program with some of his jumps like his salchow (mainly because his blade got caught up). That third spot on the team wasn't for a top medalist it was for someone to be consistent and help win the team medal. Brown isn't consistent enough to guarantee this but Adam is

    • @tedwards1025

      He didn't complain about his score or claim that he should have beaten the players who fell, he simply gave a joking response that showed he was grateful for his fans support rather than taking the opportunity to either explain the scoring system in figure skating and the points given for difficulty vs deducted for falling in a long answer during this brief interview or criticize the judges which he surely does not want to do since he knows he did not have the same difficulty in his routine as the others. It was actually a great answer because it respected the fans defending him who have good intentions but little knowledge of the sport while also not agreeing with their incorrect beliefs.
      And talking about the fact that he is the first openly gay US Winter Olympic athlete is not perverse or sexualizing anything, it is simply a statement about an aspect of himself that he has recently decided it is important to reveal to the world while he is in a position to do so and have it make an impact. It IS a big deal for anyone to be openly gay, especially famous people, because in most societies around the world including the one he grew up in there is a lot of homophobia and very few icons for gay people to look up to who are openly gay and successful and happy with themselves. His being the first openly gay American winter olympian paves the way for others to come out and encourages people who look up to him who are scared to be themselves because of bullying and serious threats to their wellbeing from the intolerant to come out themselves. People don't make a big deal about heterosexuality because it's expected and accepted in every culture but homosexuality is still not fully accepted by society and people are always working to undermine or actually hurt gay people, be it by passing legislation allowing discrimination against gay people or by physically or mentally abusing them. Nobody should have to live in fear that people will hate them or hurt them because of who they love, and having famous people like Adam represent the LBGTQ community is important to show people that being gay is normal and should not be treated as anything but. In a perfect world, people would only care about the sport and individual's skill but in the real world we live in, it's important to have trailblazers help change society's perception of gay people and help encourage tolerance and acceptance.

    As for the judging ....... I have been watching sport competitions since they were first televised in the late 1950's. As far as figure skating I feel the judging was always dubious.
    They are only people who are mostly subjective, driven by personal tastes, politics and ego. Rarely have their been truly objective judges. Even Torvill and Dean the greatest ice dancing couple on this planet were not given top scores by certain judges simply out of spite, indigestion or mean spiritedness.

      Only triples and no attempt at quads even though it was in his programme. The other skaters, while falling, completed rotations of the quads. Therefore getting higher technical scores and still getting points for execution of the quads by completing the rotation. We're not in 60s where people fall it's considered a bad run.

      He claims he was robbed even though he just didn't perform that well, he blamed Mike Pence for ruining his Olympics, he put his ego over the team spirit. Same BS as with that black ice runner who thought he was entitled to carry the US flag at the opening ceremony just because he's black. This is what this identity politics SJW bullshit does to people.

      Jaba Haba he lied about pence and trump and kept bashing them for something they never said/did! He is arrogant and ignorant! A hypocrite who doesn’t know how to behave. His routine was not worth a higher score. Just because the other two did Fall doesn’t mean they where worse, it just means that their routine was better and more difficult than his. He had no difficult jumps in it nor was his technical components really hard. Which in the end means he didn’t get robbed, the judges are not biased/unfair! He has no backbone to admit that it was his own fault and that he lied, even though it was proven. This guy is a shame for gays not a hero. He has no manners, no respect, no honor.

    He's actually very well spoken. Even the comment of him being robbed. He made a light joke of it. Didn't say "yeah I was robbed" or "no I wasn't!" He handled it great. Unlike Ashley..... he wasn't super furious lmao

      I can't believe how well she skates at her age. I'm a few years older than her and my body could not handle that level of skating anymore. So much respect for her. She is so beautiful out there. I prefer her over the jumpers any day of the week, to be honest.

    Adam is a sweetheart and looks beautiful on the ice but let's keep things in perspective. His programs are of the difficulty of the best international Junior skaters. He's a top 10 skater here and not a medal threat. Media needs to spread the love to include more contenders.

  • @patriciaboyette3697
    @patriciaboyette3697 Před 6 lety

    They score also on degree of difficulty and technical. Gotta look at overall performance and how difficult the program was to perform. Some performances just didn't have the degree of difficulty.

    He did not help USA for shit. The team would win a bronze anyway since there was no competition. He doesn't have the technical ability...thus he got scored low.

      Keely Fallis nowadays it is all about jumps. You have no idea what you are talking about. Back then, when people like Lambiel and Plushenko where some of the big names, judges cared about other stuff, but now it’s 80% about jumps.
