  • Today we are looking at Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War from developer Proxy Studios and Publisher Slitherine Games. An interesting take on the 4X genre, marred by some terrible DLC pricing. (Spoiler Free Review).

    I got this game as part of a Humble Monthly, played a bunch of it, then bought a few of the different race DLC packs and played a bunch more. I'm also a light 40k fan, in the sense that I have enjoyed some of the previous games (Dawn of War & Space Marine) and watched a few lore videos, but have never played the table top. I agree with this review 100%. Gladius is a lot of fun and is essentially Civ, but only the fighting part. The DLC does annoy me because I am missing units in my teams I refuse to buy. Buy once every couple of months I like to sit down and play a good campaign of this game. Then I don't touch it for a while again. It's a game I keep coming back to and enjoying every time I play it but if played constantly you would burn out on it. I find I enjoy it most on a nice cold weekend, rugged up with a warm cup of tea and an open schedule, because hours will pass by while I wage war on Gladius.

    Nice review. I agree with what you said but a couple of points I felt you missed are that the AI is actually surprisingly competent while also being somewhat unpredictable.
    They're not afraid to pull back to regroup if things don't go well or charge in to try exploiting an opening, they will even change tack from one turn to the next.
    And that the tech tree allows for different play styles and unit compositions even within the same race. It's similar to Terran in Starcraft where you can focus on massing cheap mobile units or slower but sturdier forces (or mix the two).
    Also Stellaris really isn't that complicated. You basically focus on the 5 main resources in the top left (IE try get more of them) and the rest is just fluff that the game will notify you of when the time comes. Even when you screw up you can trade one resource for another any time.
    Everything else is pretty standard 4X game play: Colonize worlds, build a big military and watch out for enemy alliances forming around you.
    Yes you can min-max like crazy but you won't need to unless you play the hardest difficulties or using AI mods.

    • @FirstOutpost
      @FirstOutpost  Před 3 lety +3

      Thanks. That's a good point about the AI actually. It was good even on lower difficulties.
      Yeah, I am sure Stellaris isn't as bad as I made out with that joke haha. It just doesn't help that every time I even attempt to get in to it they have changed everything again lol. Serves me right for only attempting to play it it every 6 months :D

    • @jacob7718
      @jacob7718 Před 3 lety +5

      @@FirstOutpost Oh don't worry I totally get it. When you first look at Stellaris it's just numbers on top of numbers but most of it you can ignore until its actually a problem. Maybe give it another shot when the new expansion drops later this month.
      One bit of advice from someone who has played a lot of stellaris though is to play on the smallest galaxy size. If you want to completely paint the map it will still take 100+ hours to complete and you won't be missing out any content. anything larger and you are in for a hell of a slog passed mid-game.

    • @OpticalShadow
      @OpticalShadow Před 2 lety

      I think this is a result of all other win conditions being ignored except conquest, no trade no diplo. In civ at least, the AI is always trying to do a bit of everything, diplo is easy to exploit, trade is easy to exploit, and their combat force is very sub par, often having only 1 strong board unit. I think because this game is so focused on combat, they really broke the issue most 4x games tend to have with AI.

    • @jacob7718
      @jacob7718 Před 2 lety +1

      @@OpticalShadow You would think that but the AI in 4X games is usually not a single entity. for example in stellaris the part that manages fleets in war doesn't communicate with the part that controls the construction of ships (and the same is likely true of gladius' AI.
      The problem isn't the AI trying to do too much. its actually about the approach. most games opt for an AI that knows what the player is doing and attacks if they are ahead or defends if they are behind. and sometime deliberately only attacks where the player is not.
      In gladius the AI's approach is more natural. It doesn't seem to cheat (know where everything is all the time). and it actively tests your defenses, it'll fall back on one turn then push again the next. its not some chessmaster but it is FAR more enjoyable and unpredictable to play against.

    I always look at the price of a game as how many hours game play am I going to get versus how many hours does a night out get me for the same price, and the hours I get from purchasing a game hands down usually win by a country mile. So I can't put much weight on your argument re cost, $100 dollars is about £75 quid which is about 4 hours out for a meal and some drinks when I will likely get 100 plus hours if not more out of the game and all the DLC, so its about £0.75 per hour versus £18.75 for the meal and drinks. But as games these days go on regular sale I picked the whole lot up for £40 so now we are talking £0.40 an hour, about the price of a can of cola, and I don't drink sugared water so it's an easy choice.

    I dont agree with you about the game not being priced right. Not to mention it goes on sale often.
    I think its 40$ or 30$ without discount. It comes with good content for that price point. (most 70$ games have less content)
    The DLCs are priced well. You can pick and choose what you like, its not a paradox game where you need everything.
    I WANT them to keep putting out DLCs, I want new factions and units. Why would you even have a problem with more content ?

    • @dnaseb9214
      @dnaseb9214 Před 3 lety +1

      I had to make a second comment because you pissed me off so much.
      Those unit dlcs were made after the game released, half a year and a year after. They arent locked content.
      If I want extra buildings and a extra unit for my based factions, for 5 damn dollars, wtf is the problem ?
      Do you honestly expect the 3 guys who made this game to give you free units ? (fully modeled, balanced, animated, wat ?)

    @BenersantheBread Před 3 lety +2

    Gotta say, considering most of this game's audience are going to be 40k fans searching if this game is worth buying, this video has FAR too much lore explanation. Most people who clicked on this video already know these things, you don't need to explain the lore and themes of each faction beyond just a few sentences. Even the people who aren't familiar with 40k would probably click on an actual lore video if that's what they were after.

      That's not precisely true. My 40k knowledge is scant and I truly enjoy this presentation style. Also, 40k isn't an exceptionally easy thing to learn about, which means that people who might be interested in the universe are put off by its inaccessibility. Videos like this can bridge the gap and encourage someone to read the books and become a part of the fandom.

      @@mightybaloo1880 Oh how dare I give criticism that the creator of the video himself acknowledged as valid. Piss off.
      And if you really are too stupid to understand what my fault with it was, I clicked on this nearly half hour long video expecting a detailed review of the game based on the mechanics and gameplay but it was far from detailed.
      I'd recommend MandaloreGaming's 80 minute long Total War Warhammer review if you don't understand what I mean: Short summary of each faction's lore followed up by everything good and bad about how they play.
