I was there, eighth row center. Lots of great players and moments, but having seen it all in person, I can tell you without a doubt that Gadd was the superstar that day. Those grooves were not only in the pocket, but some of the most dynamic drumming I’ve ever heard, both macro and micro. Incredible.

I think it’s a weird performance for Gadd. He was pummeling his drums. Playing so loud that he wasn’t really getting any tone out of them. Maybe he was intimidated having to follow Vinnie? Personally I think Gadd’s peak was mid-70’s, and Vinnie’s Peak was mid-80s. I saw Zildjian Day in Dallas the following year, and Vinnie was so far ahead of the other drummers , even Tony Williams. I also saw Vinnie the next day at a clinic at the University of North Texas. I still have audio recordings from both events.

@@howtobeatadrum I concur! Gadd is my favorite drummer all around from this day but no way he was better than Billy or vinny! EVERYONE was phenomenal. Clearly drumming is subjective and this was a very unique day for Gadd and I actually love this performance and learned a lot from him cuz he can never really have an off day but he was high out of his mind I assumed during this performance. Everybody was phenomenal this day nobody was the best but if you want to say Vinnie was the best that's hard to argue

Vinnie blew my mind, Alex was a powerhouse and the dancing chica is great, Tommy and Billy were the most musical. Tommy told a story with his playing, and Billy weaved in phrases over each other and also played phrases that told a story. Steve was just out of his mind, his ghost notes are the cleanest I've ever heard but the solo didn't catch me like Tommy's and Billy's. Watched this video over and over and over back in the day.

I was never into Cobham. Just didn’t do it for me. Respect. Same with Tommy. I actually met Tommy once in the classroom of my private instructor at Berklee. At the time I didn’t know who he was. So when my instructor (John Ramsay) introduced me he could tell by my underwhelmed response I didn’t know him. He goes you don’t know who he is do you? I said no, sorry. Should I? He goes yes. Then they talked a minute and turned on me for not practicing that weeks lesson. It was a great experience. I later sat behind Tommy at a mini concert he gave at Tower Records. Behind the drummer is the best seat in the house for my money.
