Nice list! Here's a few more personal favorites of mine you should look into. Misfits - Walk Among Us The Descendants - Milo Goes To College Minor Threat - Out of Step Adolescents - Adolescents(blue album)
Singles Going Steady counts because that was the only way to get those songs if you didn't have all the 45s. Wire's evolution from tight punk band to avant-garde post punk over three albums was unprecedented. And I agree that first Clash album and Rocket to Russia are the right choices
Thanks so much! So glad you agree with my picks from the Clash and Ramones! Yeah, Wire really were incredibly innovative. I'm stunned whenever I listen to their records! Cheers, my friend!
Hi John! So glad you dug my list overall! As you can tell, I love British punk. Only wish I had been around during that first wave. Love the Ruts and I have the Crack on CD. Still looking for it on vinyl. Brilliant!
Great list (with a couple I need to check out based on your recommendation). My Top Ten would be: 1. In The City - The Jam 2. The Clash - The Clash 3. Damned, Damned, Damned -The Damned 4. Pink Flag - Wire 5. Another Music In A Different Kitchen - Buzzcocks 6. An Ideal For Living - Joy Division 7. Another Wasted Night - Gang Green 8. Inflammable Material - Stiff Little Fingers 9. Zontar Must Die - The Wombats 10. This Is The Modern World - The Jam Love to see you have the Virgin Records pressing of My Generation which is probably one of the (if not THE) best sounding versions of that album. Thanks for the video and keep ‘em coming!
Hey Timothy! I'm totally unfamiliar with the Wombats. Gotta check 'em out. I'm still working on finding a copy of Inflammable Material by SLF. I just have No More Heroes and Go For It on vinyl so far. The Jam are in my top 10 or top 20 favorite bands of all time, but I have a hard time throwing them into a punk list for whatever reason. I guess that first album is their punkiest. Joy Division would definitely be in my top 10 post-punk albums list if I do one! I'm a subgenre girl, and I know that's annoying lol. Take care, and see you next time! Glad you noticed this My Generation press behind me, too!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert IMO only the Jam's first two albums are punk. And I don't think Joy Division is a punk band. They have a few quite good punk songs as Warsaw, but only a very few.
I'm starting my 52nd birthday today with your cool video!! Thank you for being an introvert and being cynical. My friend called me cynical the other day and I just shrugged at him.
Cool list. I would have The Stranglers Rattus Norvegicus for sure and probably a Jam album. Road to Ruin is my favorite Ramones album but I think you made the right pick.👍
Machine Gun Etiquette definitely deserving of the top spot--can't think of a punk album that tops it. And like you said, the Black Album and Strawberries are also gems.
Hi Emile! Love that you stopped by and shared a comment. And high five on being a fellow big fan of Machine Gun Etiquette! Love the flow of that album and it's so ace! Peace.
I don’t know how you do it, to be honest. There are so many punk records from each generation, from each year of every decade …phew!! I gravitate toward the obscure like Vacants “Television Viewer”, Ivy Green “S/T” and Nipple Erectors for the 70s pile. You should check out Abi Ooze, M.A.Z.E. (Japan), and Star Party (all are on bandcamp). I’ve been into “Lady Punk” bands, lately, and these may be a couple you might like.
Thanks for the recommendations. Truthfully there is so much punk I still haven't heard. This list is very subject to change! I appreciate the comment! Cheers!
HI! Nice to see yer back out there! VC Punk Chapter has been quiet for a while! Nice to see the Gits on your list as I'm from Seattle. I didnt personally know her but lots of my employees at the time did! Devistating loss. I agree with your list most of those records would be on mine too...missing to me is Elvis Costellos Classic This Years Model (just a personal preference) but the Big Deal is nobody ever seems to mention Australia's Radio Birdman/ Radios Appear!! If you havent heard this record I highly recommend getting ahold of it , it is classic and amazing!!
Hey Chuck! Thanks for the kind words. You said you're from Seattle. You still reside there? I was amazed at how many awesome records I was able to pick up in Seattle/Olympia/Tacoma and then down in Portland when I resided in that area briefly a few years ago. Some of my best vinyl pickups ever were at the record shows up there. Truly a honey hole for records! Yeah, Mia's loss was a tough one. She really touched a lot of people. And yep, that last record you mentioned - I just so happened to find a killer copy last weekend at a record show up north! Stay tuned!
Morning! I’m in Portland Or. now. So happy you landed the record! This is a top record for me since 1978! Can’t wait to hear you rave about it! I always tell people to move all the breakables out of the way before they toss it on! Heading to Blackpool UK in about ten days for Rebellion 2022! 300 punk bands ,10 or so stages, 4 days! Tons of friends! Have not been back since 2019. My 2020 was all paid. I lucked out and all my pre payments ticket, hotel and flight were honored! Can’t wait! Anyway thanks for your response. Keep rockin!
Great list, Machine Gun Etiquette is my favorite Damned album too. (I'm) Stranded is a top tier garage punk album, lots of Stooges influence from those guys. I think Pink Flag is one of the best from the class of '77 as well
Minutemen Double Nickels on the Dime, Descendents Milo Goes to college, the new Redd Kross Neurotica reissue. I think all of these are very important records but I grew up very near and during the Black Flag church era. Documentaries on them: the Decline of western civilization, we jam econo, the slog movie and desperate teenage love dolls. Thanks Hannah! You may be angry like I was at your age but give it time everything gets better. Punk is good for survival and for me it helped. Take Care!
Cool thing is that I have an OG Redd Kross Neurotica that I treasure. Only paid $6 for it a few years ago. Still need to get Minutemen on vinyl. Cheers.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert that’s a rare one. Big time records was not around very long. I think that label was part of enigma records. Oh yeah…. Check out Red Scare featuring Bobbi Brat. She used to work at NaNa in Santa Monica where everyone bought creepers and doc martins way back then. The cover has a bomb explosion in black and white. That’s a great record and she had a great voice. She died way too young. She was always very kind to me.
"We jam econo" is a great doc - don't know if you like Husker Du as well, but if so there's one on Grant Hart/Husker Du that's also really good - a bit more poignant since his death not that long ago, but really good.
@@zorkwhouse8125 anything Husker Du related is awesome. I saw that one and it was really heartbreaking. Grant was great. Still love Bob’s work. I hope he always finds inspiration to make music. He’s probably my favorite guitar player from the punk world. So good with melody and his sound is unique to him. He knows how good he is though. What a journey his music path carved out.
As a man who lived my senior high school years during the birth and growing pains of punk , then loving post punk, ska, wave & more I think you did an awesome job with your collection, picks & tastes. 🎉
The best album I heard in 1977 was rattus norvegicus by the stranglers. I was only 14 at the time and the bass and the keyboards were totally awesome. As far as I was concerned at that time the stranglers were classed as a punk band but my honest opinion was they were a great band who could write great tunes. Their follow up album no more heroes was equally superb. They were also the best live band I'd ever seen, and I've been watching the stranglers live from the first time I seen them in 1979 till this year 2022 and they are still a superb live band.
Me too Paul. Saw them on TOTP when I was 13 doing Something Better Change and got the album Rattus Norvegicus for Christmas that year. Regrettably I never saw them live though.
awesome list- I'm a So-Cal punk guy, so X is my fave- and you picked the right one, Wild Gift is amazing. Also The Damned are especially great. I see that Black Flag peeking out from behind you- great tastes!
I consider Eddie & The Hotrods early UK punk although others label them pub rock. Whatever the category their "Teenage Depression" and "Life On The Line" albums are essentials for fans of early UK punk. Bassist Paul Gray later joined the Damned.
Hey there! Thanks for the mention. I've always heard of Eddie & the Hotrods but haven't properly listened to them. I have added them to my sampling list. Love the Paul Gray connection, too! Cheers and thanks for being here!
Great list, love your choices...yet I would have The Dead Boys "Young, Loud, and Snotty", Fear "The Record", and maybe Black Flag "Damaged" or Discharge "Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing" ! Oh, "Can't Stand the Rezillos" too
Hi Patrick! Thanks for including your adds! Love that so many folks have been chiming in. I'm also learning a lot and sampling a little bit more every day. I love the Rezillos! Cheers!
It's cool you picked The Damned although I have to go with the first album because it was the first British punk album at the time. I played it more than any other record. And, ouch! I didn't know Chris Bailey had died. Saw them in the Ulster Hall and he spent the whole gig trying to beg my studded wristband of me. Anyway, never heard the Gits but all the other picks are fantastic and I love the fact that you have the vibrators stranglers and the Who up there as well.
Hi Andrew! Yes, the Damned's debut is a scorcher and a solid pick as well. Yeah, I was shocked to hear of Chris Bailey's death. He definitely will be missed. Hope you check out the Gits! They're definitely worth hearing! Cheers!
Great to see a fellow Nebraskan with exquisite taste! Those are all great albums. I first heard "Machine Gun Etiquette" as a teen and it blew my tiny little mind. Cool to see The Saints in there as well. Hell, they're all great records! Have you seen the live set Amyl and the Sniffers did for KEXP a while back? They've got it! Today I bought the "Punk Note" reissue of one of the records in my top 10, the first Bad Brains album.
As a 59 year old U.K. fella who started taking an interest in Punk when I was 13 .. you’ve got yourself a Subscriber! I look forward to looking through your videos 🍻
Thanks for walking us through your list. I was especially chuffed you included The Saints (a coffee shop, convivence store and apartments now occupy what used to be the studio where they recorded the album in). They're a mixture of Punk, Garage, Blues and Horror, but *Shakes Fear & The Skeleton Gang* are a great Australian band well worth listening too.
Great picks. My top 5 would be: 1) Ramones - Ramones, 2) X-Ray Spex - Germ-Free Adolescents, 3) Plasmatics - New Hope For The Wretched, 4) Germs - (GI), 5) Avengers - Avengers
Hi there! Thanks for listing your top 5 picks! AWESOME! I love Avengers and have that LP which I guess wasn't released until '83 even though it was recorded years earlier. Badass band! Cheers!
Cool list. I am a huge fan of the band over your left shoulder- The Undertones. The first record is still on my frequently played list (along with the Pistols, Ramones, and the Clash.)
What a lovely video, yet also killing me with Polly Styrene and Mia Zapata trauma. This is the first video of yours I've seen but I'm subscribing pronto! (P.S. my no 1 is probably Banned In DC, Bad Brains.☺️)
What a kind comment! Thank you! So glad you stumbled upon my channel, and I appreciate you subscribing, too! Yay! I will be getting some Bad Brains in my collection this year. It is my mission! Cheers!
punk rock is one of the few genres where quality over quantity doesn't matter because the output is enormous and there are still many many great albums
@@TheOmahaIntrovert not from US here (brasil) but loved your channel. i am starting to collect vinyl myself and i really appreciate when i find any channels of girls talking music and vinyl (heaven knows how much that is a welcome break from Dudes Talking Records)
thanks! Dr. Z here (as opposed to Dr. K), I have to admit as much as I've known these bands and others, hadn't really listened to The Gits, great find, thank you! and nice to see Machine Gun Etiquette get some credit, and The Damned generally
Great list Hanna. My top ten would be 10-Dead Boys-Young. Loud and snotty.9-Bad Brains-Rock for Light.8-Circle Jerks-Golden Shower of Hits.7-Naked Raygun-Basement Screams.6-Stranglers-No More Heroes.5-Minutemen-The Punch Line.4-Discharge-Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing.3-Dead Kennedys-Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.Clash-Black Market Clash. And my number 1 Favorite punk album of all time is Stiff Little Fingers-Inflammable material.
Hey there, Mark! Thanks for providing your top 10! This is fun, isn't it?! I need to check out Discharge. One day I will finally add Inflammable Material to my collection. It's one that has evaded me, although I have No More Heroes and Go For It on vinyl so far. Cheers!
A band from that era that rarely gets their due is ‘The Dictators’. Manifest Destiny (1977) is brilliant and unlike many of their peers they could actually play well live.
more partial to blood brothers.. manifest destiny felt more theatrical which was kind of popular at the time.. meatloaf.. the who.. alice cooper.. manifest destiny felt like one of those albums that could do well reenacted on a theatrical stage. good album, but blood brothers felt like of a rock/punk rock album to me.
@@chrisprice9244 Both a must listen but the opening and closing bars of Manifest Destiny were cleverer and more musical then 99.9% of similar releases. ‘Sleepin with the TV’ on and ‘Steppin Out’ were brilliant song construction and I’ll always love the animal’s bass line in Young, Fast, Scientific.
@@1matrix9 i love manifest destiny but i'm much more partial to the aggressive faster louder, minnesota strip, no tomorrow.. my FAVE dictators is the Live in NY album.. you can feel the sweat and rock and roll pouring out of that album!!! such a great recording
Wow. Thank you so much. I love the variety of your pics and the explanation behind each one. I’ve watched a few of these “Top Punk” vinyl videos and this was the first one that didn’t seem picked from a previously composed list. I loved the personal connections to the albums.
Hi Hanna, my list probably would be similar to yours. What sucks is if you didn't buy those records some years ago you'll probably have to pay a lot of money for a punk record nowdays, like I don't have The Saints for example and everytime I look for it price is too high. Other genres as expensive as punk and in high demand are post punk, metal (specially things like trash) and rock en español. I'm always looking for anything I can get my hands on from those 4 genres. So I made a list, not of my top ten punk albums but of something you might not see very often, the top ten punk bands with the best discographies, for me tose are: Damned, Ramones, Bad Religion, Fugazi, Clash, X, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Crass , Green Day and Sleater Kinney. Well, Crass would be an honorable mention lol.
Hi Alejandro! Yes, early presses of some of these punk records are just so expensive now. I've never seen a copy of I'm Stranded by the Saints on vinyl in any store. I'm just glad I got it for a great price on eBay, and I have on CD, too. You reminded me that I still need to get Fugazi in my collection. And I love Sleater Kinney's Dig Me Out. I probably listen to that the most! Crass were amazing. I just have one album but hope to get Penis Envy on vinyl next! Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Well I can't find affordable reissues of some landmark punk albums either. Need the first Stooges album on vinyl and its like $40.00 plus two shipping, taxes, etc. I have the Fugazi and Sleater Kinney discographies on CD because they are 90's/2000's bands mostly. Also have must of Bad Religion CD's. You need all those bands in a punk collection for sure, all their albums are equally good.
I'm still looking for Stiff Little Fingers Inflammable Material, which I never see. I may settle for the reissue even though I'd love an early press. I need the first Stooges and Raw Power on vinyl, too.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I have an Inflammable Material original, but I got it maybe fifteen years ago or more, can't remember. Even then I rarely saw punk albums. Was lucky to find most of the Ramones albums back then though.
Great, fun video! Spooky! My list duplicates you on not only the bands, but the specific albums. Two bands (and albums) I might include are on the wall behind you: The Vibrators (pop punk right I would rank up there with the Buzzcocks) and the Undertones. I would also add Angry Samoans - Inside My Brain and Black Flag - Damaged from the early 80's. Finally, the Jam were one of my favorites, and I would pick Setting Sons. I like the Saints and need to revisit again. Ditto for the Damned. Also, I appreciate the recommendation on the Gits. I had heard about Mia Zapata, but not much about her band. Thank you for the recommendation on Pistol. I had seen an ad for it, but I haven't heard much about it. There is so much content on streaming! Finally, re your comments on the Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady (my pick also), I would point out that there are two versions of the first Clash album out there. The original one that was released in England and the US version, which I think was issued after their second album. It has a couple of their later singles. For me, it's jarring to hear those singles dropped in the original album, regardless of how great they are.
Greetings, Erik! For some reason I have trouble putting the Jam completely in the punk territory, even though they are a top 10 or top 20 favorite band of mine. They were so versatile. The Gits are definitely worth sampling. Hope you like them! If you have time, give Pistol a try! And maybe one day I'll find an early press of this debut Clash album...either UK or US! I'd buy either if it's an OG!
While the US version of The Clash's debut adds some good songs, it's the UK version that is the go to, the way the band intended it with the incendiary Janie Jones bursting out of the grooves.
Nice choices especially Wire. I would of had Richard Hell & The Viodoids but no complaints. I would recommend "Ha Ha Ha" by Ultravox which is probably my favorite punk album. It was a short time in their career between when they wanted to a Bowie/Roxy art band and after when they became a wimpy synth pop band.
Hey there, Damon! I'm a vinyl addict, so all I do is talk about what albums I get into my collection, rankings, and reviews! Hope you come back for more! Thanks for being here!
When considering the Clash, I have to say London Calling was one of the two most influential records of any genre in my entire life (John Coltrane's Giant Steps was the other). But when you want PUNK from the Clash, everyone points to the first album, but I think the lesser-known EP Black Market Clash actually roars a lot more forcefully.
Wha...??? I love Black Market Clash, but not much of it is pure punk. It's more reggae/dub inspired stuff mostly. And there's several covers of non-punk songs that aren't even played like punk songs. Stuff by Toots Hibbert and Williams & Mitoo, not to mention a Booker T. & the MGs song. A lotta people consider only their 1st 1-2 albums to be punk records.
Awesome video, very interesting and you seem obsessed like myself 😂👍few recommendations, I'd have to have a long think before doing a top ten but here's a few that mean a lot to me and hold lots of nostalgia. TSOL - Beneath The Shadows, Social Distortion - White Light, White Heat, White Trash, Osker - Idle Will Kill, The Damned - Strawberries, Rubella Ballet - IF, Screeching Weasel - Anthem For A New Tomorrow, Action (punkcore) self titled album, Frenzal Rhomb - Shut your Mouth, Poison Idea - Feel The Darkness, Fear (The Record) Joykiller - Three, The Comes - No Side, Discharge - Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing, GBH - City Baby Attacked By Rats, the list goes on, nearly all of the ones you mentioned too! I was lucky enough to see X Ray Spex a few years before Poly left us!
An excellent list . You made the correct choice for the Ramones . Here is mine ( for today , anyway ) : In order of preference : The Clash : London Calling The Ramones : Rocket to Russia The Boomtown Rats : The Boomtown Rats Teenage Head : Frantic City The Stranglers : The Raven Sex Pistols : Never Mind the Bollocks The Ruts : The Crack The Saints : Eternally Yours The Clash : Give ‘Em Enough Rope Teenage Head : Some Kinda Fun The Ramones : Road to Ruin Thanks !
John, thanks for joining in the fun and sharing your list! Ah, the Raven by the Stranglers is so good. I treasure my German copy I found for $9 a year or two ago! The Crack by the Ruts is a classic. And Teenage Head I definitely need to get some of their stuff in the collection. Very hard to track down! Rock on!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert You are most welcome . I look forward to your next video . Good luck finding some Teenage Head . I believe that their CDs are available . Thanks !!
Unfortunately I didn't find anything by them up in Michigan on our road trip we got back from yesterday, but I found lots of other great stuff I'll share in the next video!
Love the video! The Husker Du album in the background kicks ass. One of my favorites. You couldn’t go anywhere in my college years without hearing Green Day. Great album. I need an album by The Damned. Sex Pistols! Yes! Anything by the Clash is great. Sandinista is my favorite but you’re right, that debut kicks ass. Love Ramones! I need to pick up that box set. Wire is a band I was late to, but they kick ass!
Hey there, Chris! Hope you're doing well this Friday and about to enjoy a long weekend. New Day Rising is one of my faves, too! I certainly hope you get some Damned in your collection. Dave Vanian + Capt Sensible = greatness! I still need to pick up Sandinista on vinyl. One day... Wire definitely kicks ass! Thanks so much for the comment!
Good mid-morning to you. I think in terms of the analytics, that's true of anyone here on CZcams. For me, it's four minutes at best. People get bored easily but only the hardcore fans will stay for the duration ;) Green Day, yes, I think that hooked a lot of people into Punk. I remember when it debuted and we got 30 copies of the CD in the Hastings where I worked. I wasn't at all surprised with your number one. I too love the Damned and they would be up there for me but I am really partial to their debut. Did Drastic Plastic do a pressing of Machine Gun Etiquette? Sex Pistols, that and the Ramones, are really people's foray into 70's Punk. Rocket to Russia is an essential to anyone's collection and thank for your recounting of the box set. For me, I started out with the Clash. They were really my first exposure to 70's punk although they really became more. I hadn't heard of the Saints until you mentioned them in a prior video. I still need to go off an sample them a bit. X-Ray Spex, is this the first time you are showing them? So I have heard of them by name only but I don't know their music. I really dig all female groups from that era. Buzzcocks and X...Hell Yeah!!! I would have been very surprised if they were not included. As with all your videos, more new stuff with the Gits. That one is totally new to me and I dig the cover. Incidentally, I wonder if the Who cover inspired the Undertones cover.
Hey Paul! Looks like you had the day off and enjoyed spinning some records! I wasn't happy with Drastic Plastic's reissue of Machine Gun Etiquette. There are plenty of complaints about it, too. Then again, some of these early-ish punk records weren't recorded the best, either. I have shown/talked about X-ray Spex in maybe two other videos now. I highly recommend Germ-Free Adolescents. Ah, so good! Since you also dig female-fronted punk from that era, you'll love X-ray Spex, Vice Squad, and Penetration, which are other albums I have displayed behind me here. Avengers I highly recommend too! The Gits...such a sad story. Start with this tune: czcams.com/video/FLoBqlN5oFM/video.html Good question on the Undertones cover/Who inspiration!
Thx for your reviews and insight. The PUNK genre will always have strong opinions. Personally I love Naked Raygun, Dead Kennedys, Ramones and Sex Pistols. Also FEAR and even early B-52s. Buzzcocks definitely Top 10!
Thanks! This was a great list. All those records and bands are worthy of any top 10 list. On my personal list I would have the first Record by the Jam. I know not everyone considers them fully punk but they meant a lot to me at the time. I would also rate the Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers album ”L.A.M.F” highly; again not considered real punk by all but a great record. Then of course The Richard Hell album you had in the background is wonderful. Anyway I could probably come up with loads of others. The question is also if the Slits made punk music per se? Their album is fabulous too and a great influence. Just to say that was a great era and all those albums are splendid.
Hey! The Jam are a top 20 band of mine. Heck, maybe top 10, but I guess I’ve never viewed them as fully punk. I love that LAMF album, too but I can never find it! Maybe one day! The Slits were unique. They just don’t fit in my list! 🙌🏻🙌🏻😊😊
Great picks Hanna... heres 15 of mine... Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady (a cheat but I love all of their albums - they're my fave punk band) Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime Ramones - First album Mission of Burma - Vs Wipers - Youth of America WIre - Pink Flag Husker Du - Zen Arcade The Saints - (I'm) Stranded Radio Birdman - Radios Appear Damned - Machine gun etiquette Peru Ubu - Terminal Tower X - Los Angeles Clash - London Calling Sex Pistols - Nevermind the Bollocks Stranglers - Stranglers IV (Rattus Norvegicus)
Thanks for the comment, John, and apologies for me taking so long to respond. We just got back from a Michigan road trip! Love that Buzzcocks are your favorite punk band! I think they'd be in my top 3! I just got a Pere Ubu album in my collection. Very interesting band! And another one of these you listed made it into my collection last weekend from a record show that I'm so excited to share with you all! Hope all is well!
This made me cry. Machine Gun Etiquette is a stunning record. I heard it in 1981 at a party aged 14. It was the beginning of the rest of my life. You are not only right to put it at No1, you are TOTALLY right.
I'm so glad that my #1 pick stirred up some emotions. A necessary, essential album for any collection. Wow, you were at an awesome age when that was released. Cheers!
Hanna you've got some excellent taste although a little disappointed there's no Replacements. My favorite Damned is "The Black Album", great songs especially Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde. "Rocket To Russia" and "Singles Going Steady" are alltime classics. "Chairs Missing" is the Wire I prefer, Punk Floyd at its' best. My guess is you're a Power Pop/New Wave gal as well, hope to see some future stuff on XTC, Big Star, Television, debut albums from Paul Collins Beat-Pretenders-Cheap Trick---so much great music from this era. Great channel!
Hi Fred! I love the Black Album, too. Just didn't make this list. I hope you catch up on my power pop videos! I put out several in the past...as well as jangle pop! Cheers, my friend!
Good call with the Gits, such a great album! Here are my 20 best punk albums in no particular order: Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade Squirrel Bait - s/t The Gits - Frenching the Bully Bad Brains - Rock for Light Slits - Cut Meat Puppets - s/t Butthole Surfers - Psychic… Powerless… Another Man's Sac Dicks - Kill from the Heart MDC - Millions of Dead Cops Germs - GI Mission of Burma - Vs. The Saints - Prehistoric Sounds The Fall - Live at the Witchtrials Crucifucks - Our Will be Done Gang of Four - Entertainment! Big Black - Songs about Fucking Black Flag - My War Gun Club - Fire of Love Fugazi - 13 Songs Wipers - Youth of America
kit without the clash debut album like her you ain't got a fuck'in clue about true punk the only one I saw worthy the Slits. the fall are fuck'in serious??? gothic punk not true punk. I know when the Clash debut they're reggae are they not I mean there's a reggae song on the album...the fall one of their albums 1st. song..... Gothic. 2nd. song on album.... Gothic. 3rd. song... Gothic. 4th. song.....etc..etc...
Excellent choices and well articulated by you. I just recently discovered The Saints and the song I'm Stranded and it just burnt a hole right through me!! Loved how you ended with Amyl and the Sniffers who are carrying on the energy of punk in their own idiosyncratic, manic way. For me I would have included something by the Stranglers, Ian Dury( Laughter?), The Cramps "Songs the Lord Taught Us", Dr Feelgood, The Bags, any of the three Birthday Party albums with Nick Cave, so many more. It's all a matter of personal taste, there is no definitive, from the Gods on high list. Great review!!
You might like this. The song "I'm Stranded" is the theme song for the Australian TV series "Spirited," about a British punk rocker who disappeared in 1982 and whose ghost has appeared in Australia in the late 2010s
Thank you! So glad you joined me for this video! I'm glad you recently discovered and fell in love with the Saints! Some of the other groups you listed have some crossover and I would probably include in my post-punk list. Yes, all lists are subjective and I'm loving the positive discussion here! Cheers!
Great list, I'm an old punk rocker from Orange County. The Adolescents played in my living room when I was in high school. Glad to see them on your list as well as X and the Germs 👍.thanks for making the video. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
Machine Gun Ettiquette would be a major contender for #1 on my list as well. Great selections all around. The Gits is a nice atypical pick. Happy to see Penetration and Vice Squad on your wall, both underrated (or under-discussed?) in my opinion. Seeing Bikini Kill in a few weeks after several postponements! My top 10 would include nearly all of yours. Other bands with albums in contention: The Stranglers, The Adverts, The Ruts, Dead Kennedys, Agent Orange and Television (if they're still considered punk). - Scott
Hi Scotty! Really enjoy your comment here, thank you! Yes, as you can tell, I really gravitate towards female-fronted punk. Vice Squad and Penetration definitely aren't discussed much, and what a shame. Oh man, I'm totally jealous that you get to see Bikini Kill! Wow! When I was in Rainy Day Records in Olympia, WA just before the pandemic hit, I remember seeing a flyer in there announcing a show. Of course, that was canceled due to the shutdowns, so I'm glad you'll get to see them! I really want to pick up that Agent Orange debut. They are actually playing here in September. And Television's Marquee Moon is in my top 5 albums of all time, but I guess I've never considered them punk. Possibly post-punk? I don't know, so hard to classify with the intricate guitar work. What a killer album! Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert "Living In Darkness" is such a great record! I hope yer able to find a copy for a decent price. My 2014 drastic plastic reissue sounds pretty good but the prices (on discogs) keep goin up up up! The cheapest copy available rn is $60! I got lucky and found mine in the wild for like $25. But yea, great album - especially the title track IMO.
Penetration's Race Against Time has one side of demos that are terrific punk and I wish they had continued in that vein. Other than their first two singles, the rest is not punk IMO.
My jaw dropped when I saw that Gits vinyl! Their stuff is extremely hard to find. Even their CD'S. Mia was also a very talented painter / artist. She painted all their album covers. 7 Year Bitch put out an album after Mia passed called "Viva Zapata!" which was dedicated to her and the back cover is one of her paintings. I think they were all friends. Hopefully The Gits catalog will be repressed soon. They only did 2 or 3 albums I think. I definitely need to buy more "X" albums! I only own Los Angeles as you well know. Lol. Thanks for the Ramones box review! Sounds like I need to own it. Lol. Loved this video Hanna! ❤✌😁
Thanks so much, Christian! We can only hope that the entire Gits catalog will be repressed to vinyl. I really need Enter: The Conquering Chicken on vinyl! Hope you get some more X LPs in your collection! So glad you enjoyed this video! Cheers!
Really love your choices. Your reasoning is beautifully delivered and insightful. I just wanted to mention another band I felt were maybe a little overlooked from both the eighties and nighties, the band is called “Les Thugs”. They walked the line between punk, grunge, and shoe gaze. If you haven’t heard any of their albums, I would highly recommend “Still Hungry” 1989, and “Happy As Possible” 1993. Enjoy.
Good Day Hanna 🌞 ! - Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend 🎆 .Top notch list 👌. I was just listening to 154 by Wire & amazed by how well its aged. The 15th is one of my all time favorite songs. Played the classic 12" of Captain Sensible WOT the other day. The video is awesome. Buzzcocks , Pistols , X , The Clash .. Can't go wrong all though Something Gone Wrong Again 🤷 for The Buzzcocks a great song ! When Joy Division ➗️ were opening for The Buzzcocks they had a night off in London & booked a gig as headliners with The Cure as opening act .. imagine having been at that show 😳 ! ✌️
Hey David! Happy early 4th to you! Thanks for sharing your thoughts as always ,and glad you dug the list! Yeah, Wire continue to amaze me, and still going strong, too! Oh, I wish I had been alive during those magical early punk years! And to have been at that gig with the Cure opening...those were some lucky concertgoers!
Great list Omaha, especially Pink Flag and Germ Free Adolescence. Two female led punk albums that i may of included are Cut, The Slits debut and The Scream, Siouxie and the Banshees first album.
Hi Andrew! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Yes, I have both of those albums you mentioned by the Slits and Siouxsie! Siouxsie will be included in my post-punk video! Most likely the Slits as well! Cheers!
I saw the Damned in Brussels around 1988 or 1989 & it was one of the most exceptional gigs i ever witnessed in my life among the ones from TOOL in the 93/94 era . Great that u brought them up first . Dead Kennedys ( can't remember which album ) was the first pUnk Band i had an LP record of in the 88/89 period .
Some of my favorites are the Buzzcocks, The Clash, The Misfits, The Ramones...you mentioned several different bands I've never heard of. Thanks for a great video. And my absolute favorite band The Replacements!
So could Glen Matlock who wrote/co-wrote all but two of the songs on Never Mind the Bollocks, recorded the bass on Anarchy, and was the exclusive bass player prior to finishing the recording of the album and worked out all the bass parts in concerts before they records the album. While Steve Jones played bass on most of the album you can’t deny Matlock was a very good bassist. Paul Cook is a very underrated drummer as well. Only Sid couldn’t play his instrument.
@@robm9999 hehe you're right, Matlock was a secret weapon as they went on. (but not for too long, alas). It's too bad Lydon couldn't have retained Glen for PIL, but then again he ended up with Jah Wobble, who is none too shabby on that bass! LOL
Pretty good list, mine would be quite similar but I would need a Stiff little fingers record on there. Never even heard of your number 10 record but I shall have a wee listen. Thanks
Hey there! Your ears are in for a treat with the Gits! What a band. And I've been looking for Inflammable Material by Stiff Little Fingers for a while. Been hard to track down. I will probably just settle for the recent reissue. I have original copies of No More Heroes and Go For It by them. Cheers!
Not bad, I'm old enough to have seen a lot of your picks, and did! I would agree with most of your top 10 as well, maybe a little shift in the order, and I would swap X and the Gits for the Stranglers and Siouxsie. That Saints LP was my first punk purchase right when it came out. Thankfully, I still have all of my punk LPs and singles, in pretty minty condition for the most part!
Interesting and refreshing to hear how loved the 80s Ramones output is. I wasn't sure there would be tons of fans of it, but these albums are definitely worth hearing and owning! Brilliant!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert U could add New-York based New York Dolls . With The Stooges , those 3 influenced immensely the Punk scene in the UK & all over Usa .
Yep, "chizzick" is right! I was a teenager in London when Punk emerged and Never Mind The Bollocks captures the times perfectly for me. A lot of social strife and the reason I consider Britain's "generation X" to be earlier than the official definition (Britain's lost, angry generation didn't create Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet!). I think the playing on NMTBx is great - a rebellion against the meaningless musicality of British rock at that time (as much as I love Pink Floyd, ELP, etc, rock had become safe and parent-friendly). The lyrics on that album contain so much of the things people from older generations would say at that time. In a way it's similar to the way Monty Python picked up on things people would say in everyday speech in the early 70s like "I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition" and "layabouts" (as captured in their Hell's Grannies skit mocking the way people talked about the youth of the day).
Mick - I can’t thank you enough for writing this. I could take a whole day to respond to all the insightful stuff here. My 8 year old loves a lot of this music and she loves Monty Python. There really is something special about the way early punk absorbs and critiques different accents and as an American I can still *feel* that, even if I don’t get the nuance. And then now, here in Chicago, there are 8 year old kids who are mocking their parents using exaggerated but still pretty accurate Brit accents (especially for kids!) based on Monty and thanks to you I can hear Johnny Rotten in there. And believe me, these kids have Johnny Rotten in them, and have no problem with that.
Thanks, I just watched this video an hour ago and am already hooked on X ray Spex, The Saints, and Wire, I have pretty much everything by everybody else you mentioned already. Off to Pirate Bay!
Here’s my ten favorite punk records 1) Dance With Me by TSOL 2) Age Of Quarrel by Cro-Mags 3) Wild In The Streets by Circle Jerks 4) The Crew by 7Seconds 5) Young, Loud and Snotty by Dead Boys 6) Rock N Roll Nightmare by RKL 7) I Against I by Bad Brains 8) Bloodbrothers by The Dictators 9) Feel The Darkness by Poison Idea 10) Generation X by Generation X 3 honorable mentions are: Stranger Than Fiction by Bad Religion Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing by Discharge H2O by H2O
Nathan, thank you for watching and typing out your top 10! I would love to get that Gen X album in my collection. Haven't seen it yet! And I'm very behind on TSOL and the Dictators, so thank you for the reminder that I need to get to sampling more from them! Cheers!
Hannah.....it was me who told you about saying Chiswick wrongly. I was born in chiswick, london 😁 This was a fantastic video,I really enjoyed it 👍👍👍 It was great to see LPs I already own and a good few I want to own too . The two stars of the show for me were Los Angeles (behind you on display) and Frenching the bully. I remember when you originally showed that Gits LP in a video. It was truely horrifying what happened to that young lady,I need to try and find their documentary to watch. I've seen the Pistol biopic type series,I think the jury is going to be out for a long time on that one 🤔 I'm clueless when it comes to actors names etc... but both Johnny Rotten & Malcolm Maclaren were portrayed ok. They're mannerisms were pretty good. Great video....take care, all the best 👍👍👍
Hey Nick! Okay, 'twas you who informed me of the proper Chiswick pronunciation! Thank you! Love that you've been following my channel since the early days. Gits forever! And Anson Boon (?) played Johnny Rotten in Pistol, I believe, and his mannerisms definitely kept it amusing! I appreciate the comment and kind words! See you next time, and enjoy the weekend!
Great list, I love the LP's on your wall. The inclusion of Wire made this special along with your choices of the first Clash LP . I wish you were able to fell the vibe of NY in 1976 when The Heartbreakers ruled along with early Television, Mink DeVille, Dead Boys and Pere Ubu. Many punkers went to CBGB but Max's had a constant flow of bands they were known enough not to prove themselves at CBGB which was a proving ground for many bands. Glad to see no Talking Head LP's on your list. Great job for crawling back in time and coming up with the cream of the crop.
Hi David! Glad you were able to stop by and I had fun picking out some LPs to display behind me for this topic! You mentioned CBGB's. I picked up a pretty cool 2-LP comp at a record show over the weekend that I can't wait to show in an upcoming video! I love Talking Heads but I guess I don't consider them punk. Cheers!
All excellent picks! For me, Chairs Missing is my favorite Wire album. When my kids were little, they used to like to sing along to "I am the Fly" really loud. Take Care, Frank
Those first 3 albums are incredible with 154 being my fave but Chairs Missing is magnificent. That guitar intro to I Am The Fly is so great, in fact Wire's guitar sound is exquisite.
My first year in high school was in 1977 just north of MANHATTAN great time to be young great live music and was cheap to see shows. Glad I am old. Long LIVE ROCK MY FRIENDS
Very solid list love all your picks. My number one would be Bad Religion and any album really can't pick one. Descendents- Milo Goes To College, Minutement - Double Nickels, anything by Social D, Operation Ivy(punk with ska). X- Under the Big Black Sun which is one of my favorite albums. Both of The Gits albums are awesome. It was gut wrenching hearing what happened to that poor girl especially when most musicians demise is self inflicted. 7 Year Bitch - Viva Zapata is a wonderful album that came out after that incident.
Good stuff Matt. I inserted the debut from Bad Religion on my list, but you're right, hard to choose. That Minutemen album still floors me to this day. Oh, and I couldn't pick one X album, so went with 3.
Greetings, Matt! Yeah, Viva Zapata by 7 Year Bitch is a great tribute after Mia's death. The girls in 7 Year Bitch learned so much from Mia and the band. They even learned on their instruments at first. I really would love to get Double Nickels on the Dime by Minutemen on vinyl. One day! Thanks so much for your comment!
I liked it that you kept your list old school except the Gits record, if it were me me I would swapped Siouxsie and Banshees Ju Ju in place of the Gits but Another Shot Whiskey buy the Gits is a pretty rockin song. Liked the video and you and Chris made a really cool music room.
Hey there! Glad you dig our new music room. I love spending time in there every day! Ahhh, I love Siouxsie & the Banshees and they would be included in my post-punk list if I ever do one! Glad you love the Gits, too! Cheers!
Awesome list Hanna. Happy of course to see Wire and the Ramones on there and glad that you are digging their 80's stuff. Too Tough To Die has become my go-to Ramones album to listen to over the last couple of years, and Brain Drain is super underrated, heck Pleasant Dreams doesn't deserve the hate it gets either. The Gits was a pleasant surprise, and after seeing it I started kicking myself again; I had a chance to buy it two years ago at a shop in Massachusetts, but for some reason thought it was readily available, so put it back. I later discovered it was virtually impossible to find on any format!
Hey Thomas! Thanks again for watching. My thoughts are that so many of these LPs in the 80s Sire box set are very underrated. Pleasant Dreams is an extra serving of pop, too so I love it! I keep looking for Gits on vinyl everywhere I go too. I'm more after Enter: The Conquering Chicken now, but if I see OGs, I will pay up! Happy early 4th! Can't wait to see your top 100!
In no particular order - The Ramones, The Ramones ; Sex Pistols, Never Mind the Bollocks ; The Saints, Eternally Yours; anything by The Donnas!; The Replacements, Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash ; The Clash, London Calling ; Repo Man Movie Soundtrack; The Damned, Best of the Damned ; URGH! A Music War ; and, Pretenders II. I'm looking forward to your video!!
Hi Dave! Great list! Chris has the Repo Man soundtrack. Guess I could have displayed that one behind me! And I finally got Eternally Yours on vinyl recently! I'm stoked! Thanks for sharing your list!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert In the video you had asked for some punk recommendations so here it goes! I've been on a local kick lately so all of these bands are from the Minneapolis area: Suicide Commandos, "Make a Record" (their first album 1978), "Suicide Commandos Commit Suicide" (their second and farewell album 1979), and "Timebomb" (their comeback? album 2017). IMHO they played a key role helping to establish a music scene that was built upon by Husker Du and The Replacements. The other band is Dillinger Four. I just picked up "Situationist Comedy" and "Civil War". They have the perfect blend of biting social commentary and not taken themselves too seriously. If you don't listen to their music I suggest at least checking out their song titles. They make me smile and sometimes laugh out loud.
Love your videos. Great to see that someone appreciates the golden triumvirate of Damned albums. Punk fans often talk like they did nothing except 'New Rose.' The general public know them as the band that did the cover of 'Eloise.' And Captain Sensible is a comedy novelty act who did 'Happy Talk.' Machine Gun Etiquette, Black Album, and Strawberries are all fantastic albums. Captain Sensible is one of the finest guitarists ever to walk this planet.
Thank you, Arthur! Glad to hear you're enjoying my content! I love how the Damned gradually experimented with their sound over the years. Kind of a chameleon but still retaining an edge! Long hail Captain Sensible! Cheers!
My Top 10 Favorite Punk Albums: (cheating a little bit by going before 1977.) 1. Fun House - The Stooges (favorite album of all time) 2. London Calling - The Clash 3. Rocket to Russia - Ramones 4. Raw Power - Iggy & the Stooges 5. New York Dolls - NY Dolls (more Glam, but can also count as Punk) 6. Never Mind the Bollocks - Sex Pistols 7. Entertainment! - Gang of Four 8. Damaged - Black Flag 9. Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady 10. X - Los Angeles Of course this year will most likely change a year later.
You certainly know your punk stuff and are keeping this music alive. Brilliant. Tough to do a top 10 here. Great idea and cracking video, cheers. Btw spot on pronounciation - 'Chissick'.....Only observation is that Steve Jones' guitar and bass work on 'NMTB' is fantastic, contributing to the song rather than being a guitar hero...the very essence....he's getting the credit he deserves at last.....and no, I am not one of his relatives.....
Thanks for checking out my punk video and leaving a comment. It was very tough to narrow this down. No doubt the list will change slightly in a few months after I listen to more punk albums/bands! cheers!
Thanks for the mention of Wine Lips. Just checked out some tunes and they rock! Garage-y punk. Looks like they're on tour now, too! Great stuff. I'll look up the Subways, too. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for choosing Wire's Pink Flag! Ever since that came out, it has been in my all-time top 10. REM does a cover of "Strange", and Elastica's "Connection" uses the riff from "Three Girl Rhumba".
Wiire still play and still kill it. Don’t miss them if they tour anywhere near you. Saw them right before lockdown (probably was dumb to go to a show) but just jaw droppingly good.
Hi Hannity, I appreciate you making this video. Granted you do not look like the stereotypical punk rock enthusiast and as a grey haired 65 year old man that is currently enjoying dabbling in punk culture and the music associated with it. Please note that I am not acting like a “Punk rocker”, I know who I am. But damn, this era is so interesting to me. Nonetheless, you did introduce me to more than a few gems; Wire (very smart and intelligent music), X-ray Spex (Saxophone? I get it with Ska, but I never thought of it with punk, but it works and it’s great!), The Gits (Germ Free Adolescents, queue up The Day The World Turned Dayglow and you are hooked on well played kick ass music), The Buzzcocks, I know the name and I'm familiar with the album cover of “Singles Going Steady”. Sadly, I just recently started listening to The Buzzcocks. The good news is, I started listening to The Buzzcocks and I am very happy about that. And, Amyl and The Sniffers (Wow!). Thank you again for your well thought out video and I’m sure that, much like me, others have enjoyed your insight.
Hannity?! LOL. Thanks for watching, James! So glad I introduced you to some great albums here you were unfamiliar with! Yeah, X-Ray Spex really brought an interesting flavor with the incorporation of the saxophone, right? Glad you're on board with the Buzzcocks now, too! Brilliant stuff! Cheers, and I hope you come back for my next video offering!
Nina Hagen- Nina Hagen Band album from 1978. One of the best punk records ever. Also if you like punk, I would call them post punk but the first self titled Throwing Muses album is incredible. Check them out !!
Hi Dax! Loved reading your comment! I was just able to pick up Hunkpapa from Throwing Muses up at a record show last weekend! I'd love to get their first LP. And I'm behind on checking out Nina Hagen, so thanks for the reminder for me to sample her stuff! Cheers!
Good list!! Sex pistols is the best. I can play all the riffs lol I am an old man i was in my teens in the 70s. i play old punk music all time. When i was a kid my brothers were into surf instrumentals. i am happy young people are still into punk!!
The count up from #1 was genius! lol, Short attention spans for the win! Not a weak album on the list. I might debate London Calling over The Clash, but it is not a punk album, and Janie Jones alone means The Clash s/t makes the list. Lots of love for The Damned. Great #1. Nice call on Bodies. A perfect anthem for the last week. I will give the Pistol show a watch. The chatter around it had put me off. You got to see I am A Cliche! I loved it. A great insight into Poly Styrene's life. Love the X-Ray Spex album. Singles Going Steady 100% deserves to be on the list. It transcends your typical compilation. Simply perfect. Wire and The Saints both kind of balked at being lumped in with punk. But both need to be on the list. I am glad to see you giving The Saints so much praise. Being from Australia and not having the punk look seems to have hurt them. As Bob Geldolf said,, "Rock music of the Seventies was changed by three bands -- the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, and the Saints." Music was moving so fast during those years. Pub Rock, Punk, Power Pop, New Wave, Post Punk, etc. But you really nailed the best of first-wave punk. The album list can be challenging as so many threw out a handful of amazing singles and then disappeared. A couple of more recent bands you might like are - Post Pink - their 8-track 13-minute EP I Believe You, OK is great. I saw them open for the Breeders and they carried it all live. Krupoviesa - From Argentina. Their EP Default is great. They cover 4 classic Fall tracks, in Spanish. Maybe pushing the punk categorization a little but worth checking out. And Ghost World is amazing. Thanks for another great video and for giving me somewhere to ramble about wonderful music.
Hello again to you, Richard! Glad you liked the count-up instead of countdown! I liked reading that you will give Pistol a chance. The reviews definitely are mixed. It's pure entertainment. Singles Going Steady definitely transcends the typical comp indeed! Well stated! So solid. That Bob Geldolf quote is gold. Truly three groundbreaking bands. You gave me a couple of bands to check out too that I had never heard of! I appreciate that. Getting lots of good recommendations in this video! Rock on, and ramble on! I enjoy the interaction!
Good Choice! Just Yesterday I've found Amyl and the sniffers here on YT... thats the "old spirit"! (my first Punkbands in 1981 were stiff little fingers, the Clash and the Exploited) Greetings from Germoney (where excellent Punkrockband come from too...)
Hi Daniel! Thank you for your comment and enthusiasm for punk! Glad you just discovered Amyl & the Sniffers! Yay! And the 3 bands that were your exposure to punk are ace! Cheers!
Nice list! Here's a few more personal favorites of mine you should look into.
Misfits - Walk Among Us
The Descendants - Milo Goes To College
Minor Threat - Out of Step
Adolescents - Adolescents(blue album)
Singles Going Steady counts because that was the only way to get those songs if you didn't have all the 45s. Wire's evolution from tight punk band to avant-garde post punk over three albums was unprecedented. And I agree that first Clash album and Rocket to Russia are the right choices
Thanks so much! So glad you agree with my picks from the Clash and Ramones! Yeah, Wire really were incredibly innovative. I'm stunned whenever I listen to their records! Cheers, my friend!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I think Leave Home is a stronger album front-to-back than Rocket To Russia, which has some fillers on the B-side
As a 60 year old British punk this list is on point, would have liked to have seen The Crack by The Ruts in there but excellent choices.
Agree.... plus, UK subs, Stiff Little Fingers. Lol, the list goes on. good to see the younger generation interested though
Absolutely, The Ruts are essential listening for punks of any generation
Defo the crack. Always overlooked
Hi John! So glad you dug my list overall! As you can tell, I love British punk. Only wish I had been around during that first wave. Love the Ruts and I have the Crack on CD. Still looking for it on vinyl. Brilliant!
59 years young myself .ur so right ruts most understand band of back in the day
Great list (with a couple I need to check out based on your recommendation). My Top Ten would be:
1. In The City - The Jam
2. The Clash - The Clash
3. Damned, Damned, Damned -The Damned
4. Pink Flag - Wire
5. Another Music In A Different Kitchen - Buzzcocks
6. An Ideal For Living - Joy Division
7. Another Wasted Night - Gang Green
8. Inflammable Material - Stiff Little Fingers
9. Zontar Must Die - The Wombats
10. This Is The Modern World - The Jam
Love to see you have the Virgin Records pressing of My Generation which is probably one of the (if not THE) best sounding versions of that album. Thanks for the video and keep ‘em coming!
Good stuff here Timothy. Almost went with Joy Division but decided they weren't punk enough. Labels!
Timothy never mind the bollocks not even there , have you got ears.
@@willieluncheonette5843 personally I think Failures by Warsaw/Joy Division is a great punk song
I'm starting my 52nd birthday today with your cool video!! Thank you for being an introvert and being cynical. My friend called me cynical the other day and I just shrugged at him.
Hi Thomas! Happy 52nd birthday! And it's on a Friday to kick off a long weekend! Here's to cynical introverts!
Old rocker from England here. Just to say you have a super cool taste in music. Great stuff. And I'm just loving seeing all that vinyl!
Hey there, Pete! Thanks for stumbling upon my channel! I appreciate the compliment, too! Stay tuned for more videos! This is a vinyl hangout spot!
The Damned Machine Gun Etiquette is grossly underrated and missing from most best punk list. Great that it's in yours!
So glad you're a fan of that brilliant album as well!
Cool list. I would have The Stranglers Rattus Norvegicus for sure and probably a Jam album. Road to Ruin is my favorite Ramones album but I think you made the right pick.👍
Hi Richard! I really love Road to Ruin, too! My list could change next week. The Jam are one of my favorite groups. Cheers!
Machine Gun Etiquette is a glorious album and you are completely correct. The best punk album!
Thank you! Glad you agree with my #1 pick! Absolute scorcher of an album!
Machine Gun Etiquette definitely deserving of the top spot--can't think of a punk album that tops it. And like you said, the Black Album and Strawberries are also gems.
Machine Gun Etiquette is a fantastic album!!!
Cheers!
Great list. I agree with you on The Clash, my favourite will always be the first album and I love Amyl and the Sniffers too.
I'm with you, Gary! That Clash debut is fire! And I hope to see Amyl & the Sniffers live one day!
Thank you for giving the Damned AND MGE the props they deserve! Totally agree. Such an awesome band.
Thanks, James! MGE is so solid. Deserves to be in every collection! The Damned forever! Cheers!
I think Pink Flag is one of the best from the class of '77 as well
LOVE Amyl and the Sniffers! So glad you mentioned them.
Right on! They deserve all the praise!🔥🎶
That Minutemen album is an epic achievement in punk.
👍. Hi Hanna: Bullseye! I will need some punk rock after my presentation later today. Have a great weekend! - Heather
Hey Heather! Hope your presentation went well! Time to punk out! Thanks as always! enjoy the weekend!
awesome list- I'm a So-Cal punk guy, so X is my fave- and you picked the right one, Wild Gift is amazing. Also The Damned are especially great. I see that Black Flag peeking out from behind you- great tastes!
Hi Rando! Definitely seems we are on the same wavelength when it comes to punk! Glad you agree with me on Wild Gift! A true gem! Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert"Do anything you want do " great single by Hot rods.

Cheers!
Love, love, love X. They’ve been one of my faves since my youth. Saw them in concert in 1982 and 2018. They still rock.
Awesome, Mark! So glad you've been a long-time fan of X! Love that they are still together and rockin'! Cheers!
I saw them in '19 in Tucson. Total dynamite!
Love this video. Glad that you produced it.
Aww, thank you so much! That makes me feel pretty good, especially since I had to end up deleting several nasty comments.
Thank you so much, Ken! Happy to have you here, my friend! Hope you enjoy my other video offerings! Cheers!
Cheers!
The Ramones of course should be in any top 20 list +X-Ray Spex or DEVO which has not been mentioned anywhere .
Cool list. I am a huge fan of the band over your left shoulder- The Undertones. The first record is still on my frequently played list (along with the Pistols, Ramones, and the Clash.)
Love your music taste! Yes, I play that Undertones debut a lot as well. It's a classic! Thanks for stopping by!
Yeah and also love That Petrol Emotion.
Well said, my friend! This is a large subgenre and I still have a lot to learn, too. Thanks for watching!
Hey there! Thanks for watching! So glad you enjoyed what you heard from the Gits when you sampled them! Love introducing people to the Gits! Cheers!
Cheers!
Great top 10 punk video Hanna!
Thanks so much!🎸🎶🎶
A band from that era that rarely gets their due is ‘The Dictators’. Manifest Destiny (1977) is brilliant and unlike many of their peers they could actually play well live.
I will not make the mistake of overlooking this band/album again!
more partial to blood brothers.. manifest destiny felt more theatrical which was kind of popular at the time.. meatloaf.. the who.. alice cooper.. manifest destiny felt like one of those albums that could do well reenacted on a theatrical stage. good album, but blood brothers felt like of a rock/punk rock album to me.
@@chrisprice9244 They were a GREAT live band...not good...GREAT. Ross the boss's power live had to be felt to be appreciated.
Wow. Thank you so much. I love the variety of your pics and the explanation behind each one. I’ve watched a few of these “Top Punk” vinyl videos and this was the first one that didn’t seem picked from a previously composed list. I loved the personal connections to the albums.
Thank you for the kind comment, Lee! I definitely added my personal opinions here and I'm glad it was a bit different than the norm! :-)
Had to pick Penis Envy from Crass. The women exclusive vocals album is just outstanding.
John Foxx era Ultravox, one of my favorites, great band live too!
Hey there! I love Ha Ha Ha by Ultravox, too! Just got that into my collection a few months ago. Cheers!
Great list. And even better album collection! I’m always skeptical when clicking on these kind of lists but I was pleasantly surprised.
Hey there, Damon! I'm a vinyl addict, so all I do is talk about what albums I get into my collection, rankings, and reviews! Hope you come back for more! Thanks for being here!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I’ll subscribe. And I never subscribe.
I truly appreciate you being here! ❤️🎶🎶🎶
I've been hearing a lot about that Pink Flag album. Great list!
Hey Calvin! It's definitely one heck of an album! Worthy of all the praise! Thanks for watching!
Great list! Pink Flag would be my number one. Such an awesome album in many ways.
High five on your #1 pick, Gary. Well chosen. Cheers!
Yes! I love the damned the debut and machine gun etiquette are amazing but the black album is my personal favourite
I also love the Black Album! Definitely in my top 3! Cheers and thanks for stopping by!
An excellent list .
You made the correct choice for the Ramones .
Here is mine ( for today , anyway ) :
In order of preference :
The Clash : London Calling
The Ramones : Rocket to Russia
The Boomtown Rats : The Boomtown Rats
Teenage Head : Frantic City
The Stranglers : The Raven
Sex Pistols : Never Mind the Bollocks
The Ruts : The Crack
The Saints : Eternally Yours
The Clash : Give ‘Em Enough Rope
Teenage Head : Some Kinda Fun
The Ramones : Road to Ruin
Thanks !

Start with this tune: czcams.com/video/FLoBqlN5oFM/video.html
Good question on the Undertones cover/Who inspiration!
Thx for your reviews and insight. The PUNK genre will always have strong opinions. Personally I love Naked Raygun, Dead Kennedys, Ramones and Sex Pistols. Also FEAR and even early B-52s. Buzzcocks definitely Top 10!
Right on! Killer favorites here. I'm working on getting some Dead Kennedys in my collection! I also need to explore more from Naked Raygun! Cheers!
Yup - your choices 2-4 were definitely in my list. I haven't heard much other punk...but at least now I have some suggestions. Great vid as usual!
Thank you! Means a lot that you stopped by. Glad I gave you some for you to check out here. Be well!
IMO only this Slits Peel Session is pure punk and it is remarkable. I left a comment on it.

Dead Boys “Young Loud & Snotty” is not just too 10 in punk, but top 10 in all of rock
Stiv forever! Definitely a must have album. Cheers and thanks for the comment!

Cheers!

Cheers, and I'm so glad you found my video! I did another punk video recently, too! Happy New Year!
Cheers!
Ahh, I totes dig THE ADVERTS, AGENT ORANGE and DK fir sure!!!

An instant crowd-pleaser, for good reason. Pink Flag is so outstanding! Cheers, and thanks for watching!
Cheers!
The Gits did "another shot of whiskey"- MY second favorite punk drinking anthem (right behind the Dead Kennedy's "to drunk to...").

I do try to get to all my comments. I'm still behind them all for this video. Thank you again!
@@TheOmahaIntrovertHello from Liverpool UK,saw The Damned Dec 1989,Ramones October 89 deaf for about 3 days!
Some of my favorites are the Buzzcocks, The Clash, The Misfits, The Ramones...you mentioned several different bands I've never heard of. Thanks for a great video. And my absolute favorite band The Replacements!
Steve Jones could play!
LOL
Of course Steve Jones could play.
Steve has worked with so many different musicians
Pretty good list, mine would be quite similar but I would need a Stiff little fingers record on there.
Never even heard of your number 10 record but I shall have a wee listen. Thanks
Hey there! Your ears are in for a treat with the Gits! What a band. And I've been looking for Inflammable Material by Stiff Little Fingers for a while. Been hard to track down. I will probably just settle for the recent reissue. I have original copies of No More Heroes and Go For It by them. Cheers!
Wire Pink Flag is a great classic, love it. The Strangers Black and White is great
Greetings, Tara! Oh yeah, I love Black & White by the Stranglers, too. I just have that one on CD. Great stuff! Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert The LP came with a 45RPM
Known as the White EP (White vinyl)
Walk On By
My favourite all time song
Not bad, I'm old enough to have seen a lot of your picks, and did! I would agree with most of your top 10 as well, maybe a little shift in the order, and I would swap X and the Gits for the Stranglers and Siouxsie. That Saints LP was my first punk purchase right when it came out. Thankfully, I still have all of my punk LPs and singles, in pretty minty condition for the most part!
The eighties Ramones albums are incredibly underrated. Halfway to Sanity is one of my all time favorite records.
Interesting and refreshing to hear how loved the 80s Ramones output is. I wasn't sure there would be tons of fans of it, but these albums are definitely worth hearing and owning! Brilliant!
I still put 'Animal Boy' in on my car's cd rotation VERY often...
@@JMD1965 such a fantastic record. I’m going to have to go crank it.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert U could add New-York based New York Dolls . With The Stooges , those 3 influenced immensely the Punk scene in the UK & all over Usa .
@@BlueHopi144 she said the list started in 77 (technically 76 since first ramones on it).
Definitely, machine gun etiquette, is the best punk album ever! The rest of her list is amazing, nice job!
So glad you enjoyed my list, Dale! I appreciate the comment!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Mick! You are the real deal and were around when punk broke. Brilliant! Thanks for watching!
Hey Charlie! Happy sampling! glad you are getting hooked on these punk picks! They will keep you busy and entertained for a while!
Here’s my ten favorite punk records
1) Dance With Me by TSOL
2) Age Of Quarrel by Cro-Mags
3) Wild In The Streets by Circle Jerks
4) The Crew by 7Seconds
5) Young, Loud and Snotty by Dead Boys
6) Rock N Roll Nightmare by RKL
7) I Against I by Bad Brains
8) Bloodbrothers by The Dictators
9) Feel The Darkness by Poison Idea
10) Generation X by Generation X
3 honorable mentions are:
Stranger Than Fiction by Bad Religion
Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing by Discharge
H2O by H2O
Nathan, thank you for watching and typing out your top 10! I would love to get that Gen X album in my collection. Haven't seen it yet! And I'm very behind on TSOL and the Dictators, so thank you for the reminder that I need to get to sampling more from them! Cheers!
Well done. Hard to do and your list is excellent.
Thanks, Eric! This did take a bit of thought and change-ups! I appreciate you watching!
Hannah.....it was me who told you about saying Chiswick wrongly. I was born in chiswick, london 😁
This was a fantastic video,I really enjoyed it 👍👍👍
It was great to see LPs I already own and a good few I want to own too .
Great video....take care,all the best 👍👍👍
Cheers!
Johnny thunders an the heartbreakers rocked
All excellent picks! For me, Chairs Missing is my favorite Wire album. When my kids were little, they used to like to sing along to "I am the Fly" really loud. Take Care, Frank
Hey Frank. That early Wire trilogy of albums is so crucial! Love Chairs Missing as well! Enjoy hearing from you as always! See you next time!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert oh, one last thing. If you ever come across the peel sessions from them, they’re awesome. Have a nice 4th!
I would love to come across that! Yes! Happy 4th of July weekend to you!
Chairs missing is fantastic as well as the very diverse 154.
Yeah, that is the prime age to have been around for punk. You are a lucky one, my friend! If I had only been born sooner! Rock on...and punk on!
Seen some Gits in the comments. Will have to give them a sampling.
Well I'm glad you went from 1 downwards as you kept me interested with Machine GE toping your list .
Thank you! Glad you liked that I started with #1! Had to keep the audience engaged! Cheers!
In no particular order - The Ramones, The Ramones
; Sex Pistols, Never Mind the Bollocks
; The Saints, Eternally Yours; anything by The Donnas!; The Replacements, Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash
; The Clash, London Calling
; Repo Man Movie Soundtrack; The Damned, Best of the Damned
; URGH! A Music War
; and, Pretenders II.
Okay, perfect! You definitely gave me a few here to check out. It's sample time! Thanks!
Cheers!
Ray Manzarek produced X's first 4 albums. Great stuff, cheers!
X's version of Soul Kitchen is so fast I didn't initially peg it as a doors cover.
Yep, and many consider those first 4 their best! Cheers!
My Top 10 Favorite Punk Albums: (cheating a little bit by going before 1977.)
1. Fun House - The Stooges (favorite album of all time)
2. London Calling - The Clash
3. Rocket to Russia - Ramones
4. Raw Power - Iggy & the Stooges
5. New York Dolls - NY Dolls (more Glam, but can also count as Punk)
6. Never Mind the Bollocks - Sex Pistols
7. Entertainment! - Gang of Four
8. Damaged - Black Flag
9. Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
10. X - Los Angeles
Of course this year will most likely change a year later.
Really digging your top 10, Ricky! Thank you for joining in the fun!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Thanks! And you're welcome!
No doubt the list will change slightly in a few months after I listen to more punk albums/bands! cheers!
Thanks for this! I stumbled upon "WIne Lips" recently and have zero regrets. The Subways are also highly recommended for a more recent punk band...
Love that Pink Flag makes your all-time top 10! Right on! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Cheers!
Nina Hagen ,born in East Germany l think.
Good list!! Sex pistols is the best. I can play all the riffs lol
I am an old man i was in my teens in the 70s. i play old punk music all time. When i was a kid my brothers were into surf instrumentals.
i am happy young people are still into punk!!
Hi Doc! Keep playin' those Pistols riffs! Powerful stuff! Thanks for leaving a comment. I hope you come back! Cheers!
I'm pulling for Rush at least in the six spot. Rock on.
"Lit up with anticipation, we arrive at the launching site..."
Rush certainly isn't punk😮
I love these selections. For those with short attention spans I would reccomend Minutemen and The Raincoats. Great job Omaha.
Fantastic adds, Mark! Love both those bands you mentioned, too. Glad you enjoyed this video. See you next time!
As Bob Geldolf said,, "Rock music of the Seventies was changed by three bands -- the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, and the Saints."
Music was moving so fast during those years. Pub Rock, Punk, Power Pop, New Wave, Post Punk, etc. But you really nailed the best of first-wave punk.
The album list can be challenging as so many threw out a handful of amazing singles and then disappeared.
A couple of more recent bands you might like are -
Post Pink - their 8-track 13-minute EP I Believe You, OK is great.
Cheers!
