Still sounds like a futuristic space age love song nearly 50 years later! Roxy were easily the coolest band of the 70s.
I AM 64 AND WAS 16 WHEN THIS CAME OUT ..I HAD EVERY ROXY ALBUM...SO GREAT TO SEE YOU RESPONDING TO THEM...AND THINK,THIS WAS POP MUSIC..SO POULAR
Great reaction. Imagine being a teenager when this first came out. Mind blowing. You will find later Roxy very different from this. Hope you explored their first two albums before moving on to later music. Viva Roxy!

ROXY MUSIC! What a great band. Check out their "Stranded" album. A choice track therein, track "Mother Of Pearl, really great lyrics cool groove and melody. VIVA ROXY!

Brian Eno was playing a home made synthesizer, Brian Ferry on vocals and keyboards Phil Manzanera on guitar and Paul Thompson on drums. Best band ever, freak out to In Every Dream Home A Heart Ache, A Song For Europe, and Mother Of Pearl are all classics. Also check out Bryan Ferry's solo albums. you have a shelf full of selections.Enjoy!!!

This was Roxy's first TV appearance in early 1972 on the first series of "The Old Grey Whistle Test" ; this was prior to the release of their first , eponymously named , album.
This is one of the best reactions I've seen. Roxy Music has tons of amazing performances and a surprising number of UK hits.
Believe me, it was so different in 1972 too. If you haven’t heard it, try This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us by Sparks from 1974.

Girl, I'm 60 years old and this is the most iconic and fresh commentary on one of the most wonderful bands in the history of pop music! I was 11 years old when I heard them for the first time and I was totally perplex and couldn't believe what I had just heard! I forgot everything about classical Rock and got totally addicted to Roxy!
This funny "effects box" you're referring to, is the legendary VCS 3 synthesizer built by a British company called Electronic Music Studios (EMS) and the guy who is operating it, added that weird, otherworldly atmosphere to Roxy's sound. It's so good to see that a young woman like you is responding in the same way as our generation did. These guys were my art teachers when I was a teenager while being subjected to a bunch of mediocre art teachers in my school. Thanks for your wonderful commentary!

If you want to hear them at their most accessible - then listen to ' Avalon' - but a good place to start is their first single 'Virginia Plain'. They were always a big hit in the UK- but are only really now becoming better known in the US. Lots of amazing tracks to discover - and David Bowie even mentioned Bryan Ferry's songwriting talents on The Ed Sullivan Show way back in the early 70s.

The machine you mentioned is a VCS3 synthesizer. Very ahead of it's time. The lead singer, Bryan Ferry, still has it.
Excellent reaction! In my opinion, Roxy was second only to The Beatles for songwriting and influence on other bands. They have so many classic songs, I’d recommend Virginia Plain, Mother of Pearl, In Every Dream Home a Heartache, Both Ends Burning, Out of the Blue, so many great choices, I envy you getting to discover Roxy for yourself!

7:46 That's an early synthesizer called the VCS3, made by a company called EMS (Electronic Music Studios, Ltd.) which was used by many British rock groups of the time, and also famously for the original "Doctor Who" TV series. The player is none other than Brian Eno, who has since gone on to a very distinguished and influential career as a musician and record producer (and who also created the famous Windows 98 startup sound).

Brian Eno was the one doing the electronic sounds. Unfortunately he left Roxy Music after the release of their 2nd album 'For Your Pleasure' (my favorite) because he and Bryan Ferry had creative differences. Brian Eno felt good about leaving the band and it was a heavy weight on his shoulders being with Roxy Music because he and Bryan Ferry had conflicts. The other members felt sad that Brian Eno quit the band, but they did understand why he did. Brian Eno went on to record solo albums. His first two were rock oriented, his third, some rock oriented and experimental. His first experimental one was with Robert Fripp founder of King Crimson titled 'No Pussyfooting' then after a car accident that Brian Eno was in, he decided to record experimental electronic avant garde music, which in 1978 he was the one who coined it 'Ambient Music'. He has worked and recorded with other musicians on their albums and has also produced many albums for other singers, musicians, and bands. Brian Eno considers himself as a 'Non Musician' due to the fact he never really studied music. Brian Eno is in his early 70's and is still recording albums. He and his younger brother Roger Eno have recorded together in the studio several times.
1972, The official year of the start of Glam Rock which Roxy Music and many others did til 1975. David Bowie was the most popular one during those years of Glam Rock.
I really liked the review. Never seen the reviewer before. She must be a musician because she was picking up on things I never thought of and I knew the song since 82. ..Like she picked up on the guitar and synth placing in sync with each other. And recognizing the oboe. I'll watch her reviews again

Yes I am! clarinet player 😅 I really think it's a shame there is so much production in music now in days that you miss the raw beauty of interments . But I cant also respect and appreciate the work that goes into music now a days.
If memory serves, it was called a "Moog Synthesizer." Emerson, Lake and Palmer used it prominently in "Lucky Man."
Very fun to see one listen to the first time, i was listening to Roxy Musics first time in the 1970ies. They used synteziser and oboe. Amazing group.

I dunno. I think only certain parts of it are live, like Brian Ferry’s vocals. Certain things like the oboe sound a little too exactly like they did on the album (it sounds like there’s an echoey effect on the oboe that you probably wouldn’t have been able to reproduce live back then).

Well done for being so open to something completely different to your usual music. Roxy Music had a whole string of successful singles and albums for many years, but this was their early days when they had Brian Eno (a future rock deity) alongside the talents of Andy Mackay (sax, oboe) and Phil Manzanera (guitar and glasses). And of course Brian Ferry! If you want something just great, try Pyjamarama or Street Life. If you want to try their stranger stuff (at first listening) do In Every Dream Home A Heartache or The Bogus Man. But the best introduction to their style of music is the first track on their first album, Re-Make, Re-Model.

Roxy Music is legit, it's nice seeing someone react to them. My favorite song is by far Grey Lagoons. That one made me want know and hear more.
Roxy Music recorded this in 1970 they are one of the most influencial bands of all time. Please listen to more Roxy you won't be disappointed

@@paulockenden4278 they did record a demo of this song in 1971 titled "Lady" and a later performance announced as "Try Out Girl" on an early live "in concert" BBC session. I believe the title "Ladytron" was derived from "Electric Ladyland" by Jimi Hendrix. I think it's interesting that in the late 60s both Sparks and Alice Cooper wrote songs about "computer girls" of which this is one.

Very recreational watching you completely perplexed at what you're listening to. You can imagine us then kids when this first showed on TV. This is glam rock with all the weird fashion statements. Totally left field and you'd either be drawn to it or repelled from it. Sometimes both. No such thing as LED lights back then. It's just reflecting the TV spotlights surrounding them. It was fun to watch you shocked. We've all been there at first listen. Virginia Plain is their first single and I think you'd might like it. Do The Strand is from later work and might get you dancing. Please explore more Roxy Music. Thanks for posting this.

I think a lot of people who bought Virginia Plain would have been shocked by the first album. No other singles, but Wonderful non-poppy experimental tunes and sounds. I bought VP and the album while still at school. I love them as much now as I did then. VP is my favourite single of all time.
11 months late but yeah how cool is the solo oboe into the sax solo plus the smooth crooning of a very handsome Bryan Ferry? I could be wrong but if this video didn't set off the glam rock movement, I don't know what then! Great choice for a first reaction.

Brian Eno wasn't playing an instrument...he was playing the band. The channels went through his desk, and he was trusted to come up with...whatever. He did the same thing working on Genesis' album "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". Bryan Ferry came up with the costume thing; he in inadvertently invented Glam Rock. In general, though, Glam Rock sucks. Basic Rock'n'Roll with outfits. Roxy Music, however, mmmmm.
