John is beyond redeemable at the point I'm up to. If they try to do a redemption arc I'll throw a fit.

@@jashandeepsingh2239 To be fair, I'm up to episode 212. John won't listen to anyone, and even giving him that bit of trauma about his past 'betrayal' and the angsty story with that one dude doesn't give him the right to have done any of what he did. Some of the people he hurt had nothing to do with what he was angry at. Their society sucks but he was shown to have known that at the beginning, but later on he still goes on a literal rampage and hurts the people he said he was trying to help. He has no self restraint or awareness of what he's doing. I will say this again; I will not be happy if he gets a redemption arc. You can have your own opinion about John, but this is mine. John is beyond delusional, and if you think that opinion is childish give me good reasoning.

Ok John is literally the worst character because he’s unnecessarily aggressive and violent, a pathological liar, doesn’t tolerate the presence of anyone, and actively makes people hate him. He’s done this all before at his old school, and the argument that ‘he’s doing what society did to him’ is absolute garbage, because 1. The author didn’t show a believable and realistic portrayal of Johns discrimination when he was pretending to not have any ability, and 2. People who did discriminate against him never did some of the things that John was doing at the school. For Christ’s sake he was basically holding an entire school hostage. Also, Johns whole trauma arc was the most melodramatic and embarrassing thing I’ve ever read. In all levels but physical, John was playing a pipe organ beneath an opera house considering some of the drama that was going on during that particular section of the comic. If I’m being perfectly honest as well, it was almost like John was a completely different character after about Episode 100. Now I’m all for characters changing over the course of a story, because that’s how you write compelling characters; you change them for better or for worse to show different aspects of their personality. But the issue with John is, it came about so abruptly it made zero sense. While I’ll admit it was quite clear that John was holding something back from both himself and his friends, and the whole ‘John does have an ability’ was completely expected, his whole ‘I’ve got trauma and now I’m a bad boy with anger issues, then I’m going to get a redemption arc’ thing basically came out of nowhere, and made just about zero sense to where I originally thought the plot was going. Also, Johns treatment of the other supporting characters was so tedious. Now the high tiered students who were in charge of the school certainly were to blame for many of the schools issues, after John took over, they learned their lesson. There was no need for John to continue to assault and antagonise them. His whole ‘where was the safe house when I was a cripple’ is rubbish, because he was never a cripple in the first place as he was only pretending, and the others learned from their mistakes. They made sure what happened to John would never happen again. They learned. But you know who did let their mistakes happen again? John! He never learned from his old school! You could argue that ‘he was pushed to the brink’, but you’d think that he’d still have learned from his past, and the others were also pushed to the brink, and they never took it out on everyone around them like John did. Lastly, John was so, so terrible to Sera during the entire comic. Now I can understand John lying to her about him having an ability, and truth be told, I think that a plot similar to ‘John lies to Sera and their relationship has issues because of it’ would have been a much better character plot line than what ever the hell we got instead. Once Sera lost her ability, it genuinely seemed like John stopped caring about her. Honestly it felt like he was just using her the whole time. Then after she was suspended, then returned to school and John ‘snapped’ or whatever, John was absolutely awful, cruel, downright abusive and manipulative to her. She didn’t deserve all the shit she got from John. The biggest mystery in this entire comic is why the hell Sera could even be bothered to stick with John. I think any normal person would have just let him go off in his rampage and get on with their life. And the worst part? After John goes back to his home for a while (forgot how long it was, couldn’t care at this point) before returning to school, everything’s fine! What!? How!? By all rights John should have been thrown in jail or something, or at the very least been avoided and hated by everyone he know, but he just seems to go back to school and pretend nothings happened. Absolutely ridiculous. You can’t write a character who goes down such a dark path, and then just pretend that everything’s fine, and they deserve forgiveness and redemption. The whole thing just came off as so contrived, melodramatic and ridiculous it’s not even funny at this point. It’s also so stupid that after all the set up for a corrupt government plot and secret organisation rubbish, we got bloody John drama instead. The whole John plot just felt so contrived and unrealistic. Now am I saying that John doesn’t deserve forgiveness, or his trauma means nothing? No. But he’s got to work for forgiveness, more than just what ever the hell we saw at the end of the character plot. Also, John certainly had some awful things happen to him, but the story kept trying to play it off as ‘Johns got trauma, poor him’ as if two wrongs make a right. John was such a ridiculous, embarrassing and downright awful character, who while I think should work to gain forgiveness and a redemption arc, rather than having it handed out to him like is has been. Tldr: John was a pathetic attempt at a layered character with flaws who’s redemption is being handled so poorly, I can’t believe people still like him as a character.
My friend wrote this whole review for me, so I’m just gonna put that out there because she actually finished Unordinary, unlike me. I respect your opinion if you still like John, but this is what I think (and so does my anonymous friend).
