    Oldsmobile built some of the most potent Muscle Cars of the era, and today they are among the most desirable. This week, we're featuring a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible, and it is loaded with all the right stuff, including the 370 HP W-30 455 V8, the close ratio Muncie 4-Speed transmission, and the super-rare W27 aluminum center rear axle assembly. Word on the street is that there are only a couple W-30 4-speed convertibles ever built with the W27 out of the 96 drop-tops made. The story of this car is just as unique, as the history is known back to the day the original order was placed for the car at Hansel Olds in Fullerton, California by Robert "Rug" Kazley. The Brothers Collection is home to some stellar Oldsmobiles, and this one is among the best!

    Thanks for the memories. I actually owned a 1970 W30 back in the late seventies. I believe I was the second owner, but never researched it. Mine was Red with White striping. It was a real looker, "and" a mover. I later sold in a partial trade for a V8 Vega that had a built 327 and turbo 350 trans. I got an additional $1000 with the Vega. Yeah, I have a few regrets but it was all fun.

    Love this story, which resonates with me. On Sept 13, 1969 I ordered a 1970 442 at the GM outlet at the PX in Danang, Vietnam. It was a Sherwood Green, Holiday Coupe with a black vinyl top, ralleye wheels, white wall tires and an automatic transmission ($4,160). My first car. It was stolen in March 1982, recovered, repaired, and stolen again Sept 24 of that year, never to be seen again, at least not by me. The 40th anniversary of its disappearance in Sept will be particularly poinient.

    My parents always got 4 door Oldsmobiles and by the time i could drive they had around a 70 with that 455 rocket engine that was so powerful !

      That is crazy.....those buick,olds,and Pontiac 455s produced massive amounts of torque even compared to other muscle cars with higher horsepower ratings

      That's what made the Oldsmobile and Buicks have a drivability edge over the competition. Torque adds a lot more to drivability, useful power, than overall horsepower, for daily driving experience.

    In 1970 working for a large corporation, I was up for new wheels so I ordered an Impala HT, automatic, light yellow, black interior and all the rest. About a month later, business manager notifies me it has arrived; went out to the parking lot and there is was, all as ordered EXCEPT it was a Plymouth Fury. After looking it over, I thought it was a better looker than the Impala and wanted to accept it but the manager became unhinged and said it was unacceptable and he was going to get the correct car so had to wait another month and finally go the Impala.

    I had a 1967 Olds 442 W-30 car I bought in 1970 for $1300. Didn't know how special these cars were going to be. Mine was a combination street ride and weekend racer. Had a Muncie 4-speed and 4:10 gears in the back. I found out the hard way that you don't spin an Olds engine beyond 6500 RPM without bad things happening. Fortunately I was a good mechanic and would rebuild the engine myself. After the fifth engine I decided to "upgrade" to a Chevy LS6 454 crate engine. The complete long block was only $800 back then. Olds purists will no doubt crucify me for this blasphemy, but all I wanted was a strong engine that had better reliability. The Olds crankshaft and oiling system were the problems. Olds engines were torque monsters not high RPM horsepower machines. I would drive the car to the track, put on some 12 inch slicks, open the headers and go. I used to regularly beat guys who had trailered their cars there. The best I ran with the Rat Motor was 11.75 at 124 MPH. That was in 100% street trim. All the seats were in it, carpet, etc. After a couple of years I decided to make it a 100% race car. I pulled the body off and was installing a full roll cage when the ugliness of a divorce reared its ugly head. My ex-wife never liked the car. She always claimed I paid more attention to it than her. I guess she never caught on that I liked the car better than her. I would up selling the car in parts to a couple of kids who had the "race car" gleam in their eyes. Never saw or heard about the car after that. That was in 1974. Many years later I saw one of those cars (restored) at Barret-Jackson. It went for $125K. If only we had known. Now I am stuck driving a 2017 Corvette Grand Sport and a Cadillac Escalade for my street rides. And to show what goes around, comes around, last year I bought a restored 1967 Olds 442. Unfortunately not a W-30. It looks great parked next to my 1970 Chevelle SS454 and my 1965 GTO. Musclecars forever.

      The olds Rocket 350 was the hot ticket for revs the 400 in your 442 was not bad but was not a rev happy motor I had a 70 W30 and it made a bit more power than advertised, I had the 3.91 4 speed a very light car It held it's own

    I bought a 70 W30 hardtop, 4 speed, silver with black stripes, for $600 in 1976. What a coincidence! I changed it to a Turbo 400, and drag raced it, sold it to s friend, and he drag raced it, as well. Just headers and a tune up, engine stayed stock. Car ran 13.0's almost everywhere, with 80,000 miles on it!

    I have a 70 W 30 with the order sheet documentation from the owner who ordered it and 69 and it is a silver with black stripes four-speed 391 Passi no power steering no power brakes same type or rims and hubcaps and the rims have a number on them that are hard to fine as well, my W 30 has a bench seat with a extended Shift stick one of 300

    The dog dish hub cabs are a curiosity in themselves, with this being an Oldsmobile 442 convertible. I find them unusual for this up scale muscle car.

    W-30 was also blueprinted motor special carburetor jetting ,"F" marine heads, camshaft, only came with strips I'm glad they put the stripes back on only way for W-30 ..

    I still have my 1972 w-30 , it’s all most the same car. Color and options too. Just not in same condition. You are giving me the inspiration to get it restored! They are great cars to drive plus can hold there own at the drag track

    The ultimate in Oldsmobile muscle is this car. Just beautiful. Too bad it's a convertible. Prefer hardtops/ coupes when it comes to muscle cars

      Jeremy Thompson. I had a 71 HT and it is the car that got away. Only car I ever sold for more than I paid and that was in 79. However today I'd rather have that vert. You can't do the shit on the streets we used to do in the 70s. The vert is the ideal driving muscle car, to let people just thank you for caring for it when you stop at a light or park.

    Power brakes were NOT available on the W30, because of the camshaft duration. They were capable of 12.70's with headers, and 3.90 gears, timing adjustments, and maybe a 2800-3000 converter. In NHRA D/SA, in 1970, they were able to run 12.1's. Jack Troxell, and Ron Garey (Chesrown Olds), had a couple of fast W30's.

      John W 1711 Stock - I was at Seattle International Raceway in 1970, and saw several of the then new W-30’s running consistent high 11’s in F/SA. I think a lot of the negative comments here are coming from the newer generation of muscle-car buffs, who don’t know how the NHRA stock classes worked back in the late sixties and early seventies. A W-30 would never be pitted in a head’s-up race with a Hemi or LT1. Each class had a horsepower to weight rule, and once that was established, the car was placed in its appropriate class. Muscle cars occupied various classes with established e.t. records. If a car ran consistently on or under its class record, a handicap at the lights ensured it could still take the win.....I’ve seen Volkswagens take the win from all-out muscle-cars, simply because the driver cut the best light and ran consistent et’s ! The fun of Muscle-cars back in the 60’s and 70’s wasn’t so much “bragging-rights” about who’s motor made more horsepower....it was more about getting the best you could out of your car and getting off the line with as close to a perfect light as you could. The Oldsmobile W-30’s and W-31’s were fantastic street/strip cars....you’d see them roaring down the track on a Sunday, and come Monday morning spot the same car dropping the kids off at school. Wish I still had my 68’ 442 !

    You know, at the auctions the convertibles with that cars most powerful engines, bring the highest bids, it's because they're so rare. Here's the reason why, because people who were buying a performance car, didn't want their big engines in the heaviest chassis, convertibles are heavier than hard tops or sedans, my guess is they must not have put very much thought into their purchase, or didn't care that the extra weight that came with their choice would cause them to lose races. I don't remember anyone who was into racing, street or track that would ever order a convertible!

    It’s good to see that the exhaust manifolds are original driver side W passenger side Z and need to tell us what the letter stampings on the firewall what options they represent in the motor and a picture of the Vin tag plus 1971 and 72 fenders are different from 1970.

      Nope, the video is all original. It's the first time we've told the story, but it has appeared in magazines before. Jeff Koch told the story in Hemmings muscle machines a while back. Perhaps you remember that?
