LYRICS
You're a cold day in August
You're a stream too shallow
You're a heart shaped box with no letter inside
You're a seed unplanted
You're a field run fallow
Your heart's used up
You're feeling cast aside
I'm sorry that I left so soon
I left you standing at the gallows
You were all strung out
The hangman waiting for the sign
Come see me at the greenhouse
In the back yard
Come see me at the oak tree
With our names carved in the bark
Come see me at the train tracks
Bring some pennies for old time's sake
Even though I'm gone
There's some memories that you need to take, with you
Now you're working up the courage
Just to walk yourself through that doorway
A big world outside
You're afraid of what you'll find
Now you're leaning on friends
Finding comfort and laughter
You're patching up your heart
You're finding some piece of mind
I'm sorry that I left so soon
You're stepping down from the gallows
You were all strung up
The hangman waiting for a sign
So come see me at the greenhouse
In the back yard
Come see me at the oak tree
With our names carved in the bark
Come see me at the train tracks
Bring some pennies for old time's sake
Even though I'm gone
There's some memories that you need to take, with you
You found a new lover
You went and got yourself married
You're doing all the things we never got to do
You had yourself a baby she's beautiful and happy
Oh lord how I wish I could have given that to you
But I left you too soon
I was standing at the gallows
I was all strung up
I gave the hangman the sign
You don't need me in the greenhouse
In the backyard
Down at the oak tree
With our names carved in the bark
Don't make it to the train tracks
Bringing pennies for old times sake
New memories that you need to make
It's time for me to fade away
I'm going home - Hudba
Simply one of the best songs- I could listen to it over and over. Saw it live in Fort Worth and it's even better. Thank you for this Bros Landreth.
I show this song to my students when i teach them about storytelling in music. Such a special piece of music ❤
This quickly became my favorite Bros Landreth song when I first discovered you guys. This song begs for an arrangement just like this.
I would comment how great that was...if I wasn't left speechless.
Heartbreaking and so beautiful. Let the fade be maybe out of sight, but not out of life. Then hope.
I just lost a true friend this song just sums it up RIP R.K
Ah man... Sorry to hear that. Sending our love.
The tune that made me a lifelong fan!
This song heals me every time.
This is so heavy. Made me sad to know that people go through this all the time. Life is short. Say sorry often. Love while you can. ❤
I feel sad for all the people who don't see this. See ya in CPH!
Wow, that was incredible. This is one of the best written songs ever. I’m glad you guys did this one again.
I wish there was a love button ❤
I heard this song for the first time last Sunday at a Local tavern , covered by a local duo, and was blown away by the lyrics and story. Almost brought me to tears. Has now become one of my favourites along with Yvette by Jason Isbel
You tell a story in a way that makes me feel things I haven't actually experienced. You make my heart hurt in the best way possible. Thank you for your music over all these years.
Everything about this is absolutely beautiful. A great song sung and played with the grace, elegance and humility with which it was brought into being. Deepest thanks.
My favorite song of theirs. Just hits you.
I love this song so much even though it hurts to listen to sometimes.
Love sucks sometimes.
I've always loved this song - but wow - this is just sublime! Awesome all around...
This is perfect in every single way. Incredible. What a song……and the mix 😮. Fan for life.
The song that first drew me in to this amazing band, beautiful arrangement guys
I am lost for words. This is so beautiful, I don't even know how to describe. Just a big thanks for this whole album! Incredible
Amazing. More acoustic stuff and come tour in Ireland 😊
I love you guys
That’s the kind of music that makes you feel something, just beautiful. Love it ❤️
All of those endless hours of practising peaked right here!!! Massive well done on this.
Naw man, we peaked A LONG TIME AGO!!! just kidding. Always hustling, amirite!?!?!
Guys please come to the west coast soon if you can.
This is such a beautiful song ...my #1 in your catalog for sure!
One of the best performances of this song to date! Beautiful work, guys! 🔥 😁
Bravo gents!
Thank you!
Such a beautiful performance guys!
Yes guys! This song is incredible and to get an official, production acoustic version is amazing.
Not into country music. But man... my heart just bled after hearing this.
Wouldn’t call the Bros Landreth country. Americana and rootsy yeah. Check their other music. Incredible like this.
Love being a fan of this special group from Canada!
Still one of my absolute favourites! Thx!
Simple perfection...thanks so much for sharing!!!
Creative, poetic, genius.
So good. So beautifully performed. Thank you.

Beautifully done gents! Looks like summertime in Winnepeg.
It’s crazy strange weather isn’t it. +9 next week. Lol
Absolutely amazing fellas! This song always had a special little place with me and it was one of the first tracks I heard from you guys! Much love lads from Northumberland ❤
How did they make this song better?
perfection
Love all these acoustic versions of your album Let It Lie! Downloaded at your Bandcamp page!
Wondering: what Tuning are you and Murray playing in this particular song?
Thank you for the Music!
Murray is standard! Joey is in either open C or open D (can’t remember which)
Beautifully done.
Amazing ❤
And everything was right in the world.
Nicely done!
Nice , is this phasing Effect on the Guitare because of the 2 microphones at different Distanz ? ❤
Nice job, are you guys any kin to Slideyco guitarist Sonny Landreth?
Great song. Have you seen Carter McLean drum part for this track. It is amazing. Should hire him :)
Yes!! He rips on it and is a really sweet and kind human being to boot!
These acoustic versions are amazing! Can anyone tell me if that’s a U47 on Joeys vocal? Or is it the Warm Audio version of the Neumann?. Either way it’s the perfect mic for his voice.
If I remember correctly it’s a Warm Audio!
Peluso 2247se on Joey’s vocal, Miktek CV4 on backgrounds, Warm 251’s on acoustics and a Royer 121 on the hidden bass amp.
As we say in French :
"Putain de bordel de merde !"😮
