The Chi-Lites broke all barriers with this song it was #1 on every chart for over two months just as beautiful now as it was then.
This song has always made me feel like crying. He sings about a terrible loss. I can see him in my mind wandering around aimlessly. A beautiful song from the early 1970s. I remember around 1971 or 1972.
This was released in 1971. Their name is pronounced “Shy lights”. A vocal group from Chicago. A nickname for Chicago is Chi-Town hence their name😊
Thank you for their name pronunciation correction. I definitely pronounced that in my local language 😂😂😂
I was trying to figure out how to tell her how to pronounce...shy...u smart!
@@EMPRESSJOYJEAN I love your Nigerian-english accent!❤ first, it is so beautifull to me😍, and also it makes more easy for a French to understand, because both are very close 😁😉
Thank you for the nickname information. I didn't know that.
Mexican Americans (Chicanos) also proudly play this, to this day.
THAT SONG IS A CLASSIC 👍
My goodness, how long since I heard this. 70s soul, wonderful. Enjoy Empress
"May, I have this dance "(Class of 71)❤
Oh yeah, my dear this is a group that originated from Chicago ( my hometown)
. These are the kind of love song's when men had no problems expressing their emotions , weather they were in love or brokenhearted. Chi- lites comes from a abbreviation of Chicago. Which was a one time called Chi- town. Thanks for this one.
One of my favorite songs!!!
I Live in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil..I love Chi Lites. Graeat singers. Romantic song.
Just beautiful they're don't make music like this anymore a real classic ❤
This song is an emotional outlet for people who
have just lost someone dear to them, very therapeutic.
This was played on the radio a lot in NYC when I was a little kid. It was so pleasant and sweet. I like how you describe it as sad and yet hopeful -- I never thought of it that way.
Excellent! The whole R&B genre deserves much more time than what's been given so far. The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Spinners, The Dells, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, The Delfonics, The O'Jays and Barbara Mason just to name a few. Happy hunting Empress. Peace/JT
Boy oh boy are you right on that. Those are all wonderful bands. This is coming from a hard core rock chick from the 70s. I still really enjoyed this beautiful music too.
An absolutely timeless classic song and group! What a beautiful reaction as well Empress! You nailed another one! You will definitely enjoy listening to other songs the Chi-Lites have! Thank you for always being you and genuine Empress!
Released before my time, but a song that played in my house while growing up. You said it right, “A timeless masterpiece.” Songs from the 60s and 70s does that to ppl.
I've not heard this song in years!
Thank you, Empress!
My grandmother loves this song
Beautiful song! Have always loved it!
I'm giving away my age. I was a teenager in 1971 when this song was released. I bought the 45 rpm record of it, which was a big deal because I never had much money and only bought 5 or 6 records ever. I know it's about a breakup, but I like the background vocals and the harmonies. I don't know whether the guitar distortion on the intro is intentional or accidental, but it certainly made this recording distinctive. Love you, Empress.
I kind a feel everyone posting is your age (EDIT: or our age). We all lived through and felt those years. I wish the youth today could be open minded enough to listen to this music. I am sure it would take at least some of their heartlessness away.
Ron...u didn't buy for many records? Did u not get money from yr parents. I had so many 45s...well then I started working at 13 becuz I knew I couldn't get much from parents....
Me too
Have You Seen Her is one of the greatest songs ever written. It should have won a Grammy.
The ultimate "ghosted by your love" song. Well before we had a phrase for ghosting.
Or perhaps just left and man is stuck in disbelief because he thought he “had her in the palm of my hand”
A WOMAN WHO'S HEART IS JUST AS HUGE AS HER BEAUTY COWBOYS ❤️
What are beauty cowboys?
They realy sound like "The Delphonics"!❤ remind me the good old time!
As you said Empress, this is a timeless classic! I was still in college when this came out. The Chi-Lites have beautiful harmonies and a few other songs by them you'll like are Oh Girl, A Letter to Myself, The Coldest Days of My Life, and I Want to Pay You Back. Enjoyed your reaction Empress! Thanks for the memories!❤
Empress going old school...THE CHI-LITES good stuff
At the end he gives away why she left: he thought he had her in the palm of his hand.
She was very tiny.
I'm sixty three years old and I remember this song when it came out, it's a very beautiful song indeed. A masterpiece.
Chicago's own!!!
It is a beautifully constructed and produced song. I'm so old I remember when this was released, haha! I hear it and nothing but memories run through my big Irish head....
You can bring the beautiful music to the table and your reactions are like 🍒s on top keep up the outstanding work darlin ❤️
I've loved this since I first heard it as a kid.
They said, when the song came out, and they were on tour, they left the stage, and the crowd was chanting, "HAVE YOU SEEN HER, HAVE YOU SEEN HER"! And they had to come back, out on stage, and sing part of the song, before they would leave!
Eugene Record - the greatest singer/song writer ever..............Eugene Record singing with the Chi-Lites , sheer perfection. He wrote so many songs.
Theses boys was great! Similar to the Stylistics!
I know this song like I know how to breathe.
I know exactly what it is that “gets” people about it.
There’s a secret ingredient going on underneath all the lush harmonies that wears you down without you knowing it.
The “Hum” or “Woooo” of that sustained ghostly organ!
It’s always playing and it blends like magic with all the elements.
You hear it best at the end “or Vamp” of the song.
When they repeat the title over and over.
It’s the thing (musically) that makes the song sad.
Like a funeral home organist.
It’s JUST SO FRIKIN BEAUTIFUL.
The drums and bass are so locked.
And then there’s this chinga chic ching guitar that sounds so right.
I wait all song for that beautiful ending.
Sad beautiful and funky at the same time.
A masterpiece!
Love this song you look so awesome today anther great reaction by you again like always thank you so much for sharing your video with us love it Joy.🌹👍
1971.. Sad, sad song... Your eyes told the story and when you looked into the camera it was spellbinding !!
The LEGENDARY Chi Lites from Chi town
@EMPRESSJOYJEAN, It just happens to be a nice soulful groove that's singing about losing someone you're in love with. Both things are true! A lot of classic Soul/R&B music from the past will do that. Good reaction.
I was a junior in high school when this song was released in 1971. Still love it, and your reaction😻
A sad but a wonderfully performed song. This group originated from my home town Chicago!!!❤ This is from the 70s.
Love to you too Empress. Great to see you and your reactions.
the Shi Lights were but many soulful singers. There are so many
to explore. You cannot go wrong with these iconic songs. God Bless
you Empress. See you next time. Take care!
Thank you! 😍😀✌
Love you, Joy Jean!
Love your channel as well!
Kudos!
I bought this as a 45rpm as a 16 year old! Love the Chi Lites ....
I feel the same. I've been listening to this song for over 50 years. I put it on every Playlist, in every device I've had over the years. I never fail to feel the pain.
Classic soul at its finest ✌🏾
Another emotional reaction by the beautiful Empress. Moved me to tears. Love you, girl!
Love your emotional response. Another beautiful song from them in 1976 is "Oh Girl". Also if you haven't got this on your list "I have nothing" by Whitney Houston, a very powerful love song. Keep smiling, it's infectious.
I had been home from Nam for a couple years ('67-'68 Tet Offensive..Sub Unit One, 1st Anglico USMC..Silver Star and South Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/silver star) and about to marry my bride when this tune came out...we still are married, and grandparents twice over!
Other soulful groups to check for from this era...STYLISTICS, BLUE MAGIC, HAROLD MELVIN & THE BLUE NOTES, THE DELLS
Back when love music was actually about being in love .
In the 60s and 70s people were more in touch with common everyday sadness.
If you were sad (which people today call “mental illnesses”) you put on a song about another person’s troubles and like magic, you didn’t feel so bad.
“Identification” with other human problems made you forget about your own for a minute. Then the healing begins.
Today, everybody’s up!
Showing your flaws is a no no.
Gotta shine.
“She doesn’t hurt me I’m not weak!”
We pretend.
Not in the 70s!
“What’s the matter baby?”
“He/She broke my heart!”
“Aww baby what happened?”
It was ok to be vulnerable.
No shame!
We healed quickly!
By the end of the week somebody else was checking for you.
All was well.
They call it “social media”.
It should be called “artificial socialization!”
Because we ain’t socializing.
We don’t know each other.
Because we ain’t around each other.
We don’t know how humans work.
There’s no outlet.
So we turn inward.
That is what’s causing us to break!
There’s really nothing wrong!
It’s just life being life.
It eventually works itself out.
But you can’t learn that in isolation.
We need to hang out again.
Go to the party.
Go be around each other again.
Date!
Attract one another.
Be vulnerable.
Our phones, the internet, IS NOT REAL LIFE!
It’s artificial.
Correctly pronounced "Shy-Lights". Brilliant song.
Since you obviously love the soul music of the 7o's, here are a few suggestions.
OH, GIRL by the Chi - Lites.
I HOPE WE CAN BE TOGETHER SOON,
THE LOVE I LOST,
IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW by
Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.
SHOW AND TELL by Al Wilson.
PILLOW TALK by Sylvia.
PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH by Barry White. The last one is from the 9o's, but you'll enjoy it just the same. Keep smiling. 😃
Great sad song
Black Americans created “Soul” so it’s not that shocking to see us Black Americans singing without soul, you gotta understand our history and racial discrimination with is a boost for our emotional soul singing goes a lot to it. That’s why alot copy black American style but can never imitate our soulful sound becuase they didn’t experience what we experience, not trying to downplay the brothers and sisters outside of America, but I’m just being bluntly truthful.
Preach!
You’re on the plantation. A born victim of your own ignorance and laziness.
One of my favorite oldies. Mc.hammer did a good job remaking this song. Should check it out. Another of my favorites
